That's true, but they also use eight regions, which then translate easily into a playoff bracket (GA and TN do it similarly), instead of needing some advanced math to figure out the playoff brackets. However, the problem with doing it that way is inflexibility--you end up having to stick people away from their rivals or in leagues with huge travel times. For instance, in 4A, if you did it that way you'd probably have Greenville schools in a league with Raleigh schools and Asheville schools in a league with schools up around Boone/Lenoir. It wouldn't be the end of the world, but the rivalries and gates would definitely be less and kids would spend a lot more time on the bus.

I hope whatever they do they classify the state as a whole, not split it east-west and classify each region separately. That’s what they did last time and it really messed up 1A in my opinion. Schools in the west with over 600 enrollment were put in 1A and schools in the east with enrollments in the 500s classed as 2A.

Are you sure about that? I thought the state was divided east and west after the classifications were set?

It’s pretty crazy right now, the cutoff lines are different depending on if you’re east or west. For instance, the East has Goldsboro and East Bladen in 2A with alignment scores under 450 and the west has Uwharrie Charter in 1A with a 550 alignment score.

No. The state drew their east-west line and then classified each region separately.
Alignment and the classification setup needs a complete overhaul but it will not happen. You cannot get the schools to come together even if the NCHSAA puts forth a strong proposal.

SC is geographically an easier state to work with. Also, about 120 less schools and not as many issues with the non traditional schools but it is coming.

There are so many potential options that it makes is somewhat challenging to work through them and keep schools somewhat positive.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think SC has teams from different classifications in the same region like they have in NC with the split conferences.

TN uses regions to. They have 8 regions for 6 classifications. 4 in the East and 4 in the West. Top 4 in each region(conference) makes the playoffs.

This is what I was referring to. Makes perfect sense???

2A East
East Carteret 534
Holmes. 549
Louisburg. 561
Manteo. 592

1A West
Carver. 680
E Randolph. 671
Thomasville. 638
Draughn. 630
Mtn Heritage. 614
Uwharrie. 601
There's more to it than just the enrollment but that does seem out of whack. How much did the government subsidized lunch and Wells Fargo Cup cause some movement away from their actual enrollment?

Even if you look at it by alignment score instead of just enrollment, the high end of 1A west is like 20% higher than the high end of 1A East.

Yeah, NC does a terrible job compared to other states. They really dropped the ball in wrestling this year.
I disagree. Some things they are good at but I do believe NC has dropped off a bit. I have worked with other state associations and not having happy people is a common thread among them. SC, Ga, and Florida have all had major issues and complaints over the years.

The last few years have been crazy everywhere.
