Freshman class living up to hype with impressive offseason

Robin Washut • HuskerOnline
@RobinWashut
Nebraska brought in a whopping 27 players in a 2019 class (which included 25 true freshmen) that ranked 15th nationally by Rivals.com.

The highlights of the group – like four-stars Wan’Dale Robinson, Noa Pola-Gates, Bryce Benhart, and Ty Robinson – have been exactly what Frost and Co. had hoped over the course of spring practices and fall camp.

But the potential overall impact of the class could go well beyond that.

Since the start of spring ball, other true freshmen like offensive lineman Ethan Piper; running back Rahmir Johnson; wide receivers Demariyon Houston, Jamie Nance, and Darien Chase; defensive backs Quinton Newsome, Myles Farmer, and Javin Wright; and outside linebacker Garrett Nelson have all been mentioned by coaches and/or teammates.

Following Friday’s scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium, Frost was asked if he could see any members of the 2019 class having an immediate impact for the Huskers this season.

“Yeah, I think there’s several,” Frost said. “I think there are several guys that are going to be household names in Nebraska someday.”
That leads to quarterback Luke McCaffrey, who, despite being firmly situated behind Heisman Trophy candidate Adrian Martinez and older players like Noah Vedral and Andrew Bunch, has seemingly elevated his stock by the day since joining the team in the spring.

Listed as a three-star athlete coming out of Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian, McCaffrey has proven he’s every bit of what Nebraska is looking for in a quarterback.

“I think McCaffrey’s understanding of the offense is elite, honestly, for his age,” Frost said. “Being a new freshman, he had spring ball to work with, but I think he’s faster than I expected him to be and he throws it really well. He’s also kind of got that knack to make plays when stuff breaks down with his feet or with his arm, a little bit of the magic we want our quarterbacks to have so something can be created when nothing’s there.”

Including a 2018 class that ranked 21st nationally, Nebraska has now brought in consecutive top-25 classes since Frost and his staff took over in Lincoln.

The 2020 group is off to a bit of a slower start with just eight verbal commitments, though that does feature three four-stars.
.

But there’s a belief that part of that could be by design, as NU might be waiting for some more on-field success this fall before putting the press on in its top 2020 targets.

If the ’20 group and beyond can end up anything like 2019’s, the Huskers could be on the verge of something special in the next few years to come.

“We’ll be a complete team when we have four or five classes like (2019) on our football team and a lot of competition,” Frost said. “But this young group has come in, learned really fast, adopted our culture really fast; they’re good teammates, and there are some really talented kids in that group. I think that’s going to help our infusion of talent, but we need to see which ones are ready to play this year and which ones aren’t.”
Nebraska's 2019 freshman class, including receiver Darien Chase and defensive lineman Ty Robinson above, have been everything the Huskers had hoped so far. (Associated Press)

I'm as big a Husker football fan as anyone and am feeling very positive about this year's improved outcomes. But come on, if you don't recognize this article as a big ole pitcher of red koolaid, then your name is most likely Robin.
I don't think the fact that a large number of talented freshman could and probably will contribute is kool aid. Just the facts. Many studs in this class that are gonna be stars. GBR

C'mon, I understand Adrian's good, but with Tua, that barbie QB at Clemson, Okie's Hurts, Bulldog's Fromm, THE's Fields and Jonathan Taylor at Wisky, A.M is out of the top 6.

This is media hype put on a Sophomore from a 4-8 team.

There might be 14 classes ahead of us but I think the attrition for this class will be very low and you have to also take into account three Grad transfers that will likely be starters. The sport is very different from 10-20 years ago. Classes will be judged on how unified a team is, how willing players are to sit and wait, or even sit and be the 2nd string in order to provide depth. The best sign for the future is the fact that a number of guys are pointing out that it isn't just about getting to the league it is a common purpose of winning at Nebraska. This is a major shift that can't be overlooked. If a coach uses a main selling point of getting players to the NFL they will face major attrition due to transfers and early exits and a top 5 class could quickly weaken by the time the kids would be expect to be all-americans. Frost, like T.O, puts a heavy emphasis on player psychology. The mindset of belonging to something greater than yourself. This means some players will never come to nebraska but those that do are much more likely to stick and fulfill and role in the system regardless of the desire to transfer. The same goes for the coaching staff, as coaches are more likely to stay in position roles rather than promote out for their own agenda.

Vegas odds have him between third and fifth

He IS a preseason Heisman candidate whether you want to call him that or not.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but a quick Google search and check of Heisman Trophy odds, every single one I looked at had AM in the Top 5, so simply calling him a candidate is accurate and not a stretch. Calling him a favorite would certainly be a stretch, but simply a candidate, not even close. For that matter, a top skill position player on just about any Power 5 team could probably at least be called a candidate.

The article could've been written without "Heisman Trophy Candidate" describing A.M. but Robin decided to put it in there. It adds nothing to the article about the talented class brought in by Frost & staff. It only serves to fire up the koolaid drinkers, and the haters, when he doesn't win it. Media wants opposing sides...Centrists & Realists don't make for good news articles.

It’s a good read. Bottom line: Frost is recruiting to the “mission” rather than where players may go professionally.

I am drawing a blank on the third grad transfer, Daniels, Noa and ....?

Sometimes the kool-aid is right. Why not this time?
I hope so, way more than anyone, but the media's pre-season koolaid has looked sweet for many years and tasted like *** for several.

Let's hope it's served in a Frosty mug this year.

Why is Fields--who has done almost nothing, and in any case far less than AM--ahead of AM?

I am going to disagree with you because it adds context as to why a freshman while doing great isn't in a position to be the starter.

Do you know how much the national media hypes Heisman candidates? It seems like there are at least 30 "Heisman candidates" the national media will spout on about thrroughout the year. I think it's kind of early for Heisman candidate talk already, but AM certainly has a better case than Fields.

Because AM is a "Heisman Candidate" could've been replaced very easily
by "Last Year's starter" but Robin decided to inflame the koolaid crew with the word Heisman.

Not sure what you mean by inflame but it sounds bad. Inflamed conjures images of anger.
