As one of the "flat earthers," I would love nothing more than to see competitive 1A football in the East. When I went to school at Tarboro High, we were a very good football program but nowhere close to dominant. We would win our conference, but the playoffs were always a crap shoot from the second round on. Maybe it's the grumpy old man coming out in me, but the best moments in my life are those in which you succeed in the face of serious adversity. Aside from the 1984 state championship season, the 2011 Tarboro team that won 5 playoff games by a combined margin of 18 points was the most satisfying playoff run I can remember. It's a different world than Tarboro today when anything short of a state championship is considered a down year. Any game that doesn't have a running clock is considered an off week. Maybe it's just me personally, but something feels inherently wrong about going to playoff games expecting the same uncompetitive, embarrassing results you saw during the regular season. Last year was a pleasant surprise in that Perquimans, Northampton and Pender all pushed us and gave me some hope that maybe the competition in the East was rising to the challenge. Frankly, I hear all the discussion from the West and how much competition there is on that end of the state and I can honestly say there are times I feel envious.
