Marist has the football numbers and enrollment for the Blue. But, they didn’t make the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years playing in the third division. Not sure how anyone could justify a 2-level bump based on their recent performance.
Didn’t Marist get significantly hit with the injury bug this year? I also don’t think Marist would want to move down in divisions. They are up for the challenge.

I have watched several ESL & MC games this year and have voiced my opinion on both teams

Providing that both teams play their best games

I will take MC in this match up

I tried settling this argument back on page #1 but it didn't work.

Here are the top 5 in Illinois, deal with it.

1) Wilmington
2) Mt Carmel
3) Brother Rice
4) ESL
5) Byron

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Fake News???? Why I outta....

Wilmington & Byron are undefeated all-time against MC, Brother Rice, Loyola, ESL and LWE. So there!!!!!

Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?
Yes! Yes! My point exactly!

If I have never been invited to, or visited your kitchen, how could I ever rate you in the top 5 kitchens, let alone #1.

How can you have any pudding if you don't beat yer meat?

All in all, you're just another brick in the (football) wall.

They are in division 3 currently but believe in the new system they are being forced in 1.

Where they belong. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m sure you are right and I’m wrong but how do you know they’re in the 3rd division?

THIS year
I don’t think that ESL matches up well with MC

I say that with the utmost respect towards ESL and what the coaches do with those kids
What is this like New York, New York? A city so nice, you have to say it twice?

I’ve said this numerous times….ESL played a very strong schedule and LOST to every single tough opponent they played.

Mt Carmel played a tough schedule ALL SEASON and is playing in the highest playoff bracket possible and is not only playing but dominating in it.

In conclusion…LOSING…again…L…O…S…I…N…G to Nationally ranked teams and then playing down two levels of competition doesn’t put you in the same conversation.

ESL is great at what they do and a great team. Hats off to you for being a safe haven for so many D1 athletes facing hardships it’s commendable. However, until the conference lets them play up to the competition they will not be considered #1.

It’s like giving a 20 year old the 3rd grade spelling bee trophy.
Tuccs - it’s nice to read this again. Well done, sir.

The formula for determining the best team in the state of Illinois is quite simple.

1) The team must win a state championship in one of the eight classifications.
2) The team is assigned points that correspond to the class level in which it won the championship.
* Games against out-of-state teams are not used in this formula because we are determining the best team in the state.
3) Subtract one point for each loss the team has incurred.
4) For unbeaten teams, divide the closest margin of victory by ten and consider the result to be points earned for use in this formula.
5) Add and subtract points as called for in steps 2, 3 and 4. The team with the most points is the best team in the state.

So, as things presently stand, and assuming both Mt. Carmel and East St. Louis go on to win their respective state championships, here are the calculations.

Mt. Carmel = 8 - 0 + .4 = 8.4 points
East St. Louis = 6 - 0 + 3.9 = 9.9 points

East St. Louis should be considered the best team in the state unless either Nazareth or Fenwick loses to them by less than 24 points in the 6A state championship game.
Can you re-run these calcs?

I understand backing your team no matter what

but ESL doesn’t have a mid level passing game against a good defensive play calling coach

you can’t be #1 in the state if you can’t air the ball out

In this game, they had 158 yards passing compared to 155. Shanklin has 17 completions or 27 attempts, but 2 ints. Not bad, Not great.

Why are we living in the past? We are talking about this year. Last year you beat Loyola in what week 1? Didn't St Francis also beat Loyola? If we are going based on beating the 8a Champ in the regular season then I guess you have to include Franny in the conversation too right? See how dumb that is? So Last year you beat the same 8a champ a 5a school beat. Once again you lost to the nationally ranked team and then you beat up everyone else while playing down to a few levels of competition.

In regards to number 2, I have said and continue to say that this season ESL with the amount of losses they had shouldn't be considered in the top 5. If the Number 1 team loses are they still number 1? If they lose twice are they still number 1? if they lose a 3rd time are they still number 1? I don't care if they played the '85 bears since when are losses rewarded with #1 rankings? When they beat up Fenwick or Naz next week they can be in the end of year top 5 maybe even #3 because I am feeling generous.
Because I am still feeling generous I will leave ESL in the top 12 of Illinois behind the state champs in all 8 classes and Naz and CC.

Naz making a case now with 2 good losses.

How do quality losses work? More points for the more you have or for the less you have? That’s what we have to figure out because no one can come close to the 4 quality losses ESL has including Fenwick as they only have 3 quality losses to the Flyers 4.

Just a thought so no need to pile on.
Do they really care that much about the winning 6A state championship? Or do they care more about their national schedule and how they perform against those teams and are perceived nationally? Because if they cared they would have given the ball to Cook 30 times and won, IMO. Almost like they don't have that "last game of the year do anything to win mentality". Example. in 5A the announcers kept harping on SF for not giving the ball to RB but why? What they were doing was working, last game of year do whatever you have to win...

To add, I don't care, they can run their program however they want.

I kind of agree with this take. I bet if you asked ESL players and supporters they'd take a win over IMG over a state title.

I think they care, for sure but they definitely did not have any sense of urgency in my opinion. I don't think they had it all season. I saw some fight in our first game of the season but not much after that. We didn’t have a great showing against the National teams either and I felt we definitely could have played those games better. At the end of the day, the boys on the field will have to play the game. They have to want it more. The coaches do teach that. But just like in school, everyone doesn’t get an A on the test. Doesn’t necessarily mean the teacher didn’t do his or her job.

Yes, I agree they are hyper focused on that and good for them (I mean that sincerely). But last night wasn't putting a kid into college, they could have played it simple and won IMO.
Didn't see the game but it sounds like mistakes hurt them more than the game plan. Cook had 26 carries for 183 and 2 TDs.

The field view of the big interception showed only MJC busting butt in pursuit. Not a good look, sadly. That is disappointing but as you said, kids!

I bet they’d be happy putting a double digit number of kids in college programs each year and lose both.
This is REALLY what deserves the hat tip. I mean it 100% sincerely and have said it over and over again they are very good at what they do and that is take kids from an area that might otherwise get overlooked and get them to the next level.

How many lives have genuinely been changed because the ESL program exists? That’s truly what they do best.

That being said, last night was….oof!

They are just kids, I'll speak for myself but need to remember that at times.
