How important is the Mississippi State game?

I watched only one game of theirs last year, and it was the bowl. They had a young qb, a very athletic running qb, and the announcers hyped him the entire game long. Right up until he broke his leg late in the game.

Ill have to look him up, but he looked like the type of guy to give DC'S headaches. But he could also not be recovered yet.
He'll be a heisman candidate after the game.

Since the team is expected to win 6 games, and 5 out of 12 games are against preseason Top 20 opponents, every game is important. It can afford to lose to unranked opponents.

Absurd and embarrassing to the entire system.
the bowl system itself is largely responsible for devaluing bowl games. i'm still mightily opposed to players opting out, but when MOST teams make a bowl, it's no longer special.

As far as I'm concerned, any bowls not affiliated with the CFP could be eliminated. Let's make competitiveness vital to relevance.

I don't think M. ST will be a problem. - In fact, I went down the schedule list.

In my heart, I honestly didn't pencil in an "L" until the A&M game. 10-1 up to that point, and then we beat Clemmons to secure a spot in the playoffs.

That was my gut reaction going down the schedule list. - Then I realized the absurdity of it, and laughed at myself.

Admittedly I don't know much about MSU football, aside they hired a new DC. Coming in for a 2nd stint as the MSU DC. From what I read, he's considered to be a pretty decent hire.

I sure hope David Pollock is right. He seems to think we will be knocking on the playoff door.

I always respected Pollock when he played at UGA.

It would be nice, but the talking heads always pump up the "also rans" in the offseason. The networks and podcasts need numbers of viewers/listeners and there are a lot more fan bases that want to get into the playoff than ones that have been in it.

He was a beast at UGA. It was sad how his career was cut short in the NFL by injury and how he was screwed by ESPN.

Exceedingly important, as it turns out.

They are shaping up to be quality opponent.

No longer is this a "gimme" that we need to bank before our tougher games get here. It's game we'll have to play our very best to have a shot at winning.

MSU is very good. I'm legit concerned.
Yes, they are averaging 50 points a game and giving up only 13. They scored 38 against Minnesota, not a juggernaut, but a legit P4 team. They did what they were supposed to against La. Monroe, scored 62 points while giving up only 13, which were likely given up by backups.

every one had this as automatic win,
well if I watched Minnesota game ,
no longer -they looked mid season form,
with stud qb lose this game ky and arky will b only
predictable wins, just that simple,ie beamer tenure hanging on this one

It will very likely shape the tone for this season and, yes, Beamer's tenure.

We are 2-11 in our last 13 P4 games.

Until the next game of course.

Beating Mississippi State is irrelevant if we can't beat a few more teams down the road.

I see that logic, but I was looking at it like MSU, UK and ARK as our games we should win, added to our patsies. That gave us 5 wins and we needed an upset or Clemson to at least go bowling.

But, as with all things, plans evaporate once the bullets fly.

Either way, this is one of those games that I see as an early barometer. Its only one game, but I cant see us succeeding against a lot of our schedule if we dont get this one.

Yep. A win doesn't mean we're gonna beat Bama, but if we lose, it certainly bodes poorly for the season outlook.

I get it your point, but calling game 3 the most important game on the schedule fails because there are 9 more after it.

I agree with you, though, that it'll be tough to have a good season if we can't beat Mississippi State (unless, of course, the Bulldogs are the 2026 version of 2025 Vanderbilt).

From what I've seen, UK and Arkansas are going to be two more patsies. I just saw UGA is a 24.5 favorite over Arkansas AT Arkansas this Saturday. That is a huge line for any conference game especially for a home team.

I think MSSt is a big, big game. A loss to them and 6 wins gets much harder to come by.

Yeah, thats kind of what I meant about plans changing. Maybe MSU is better this year and OU falls apart.

With NIL, its harder and harder to predict these things.

Maybe I need to run a few season simulations on Madden. :)

Arkansas is garbage. Too bad we don't have Vanderbilt on the schedule this year because they're terrible as well.

If our WR's and TE's can't get rid of the "yips" and actually start catching easy passes..... we won't win.

We won't even have a shot at winning. - Having said that, I've been a fan for 50 yrs, we'll probably win 57-6, or something......just because it makes no sense

Losing to MSU is a double whammy because you're losing to a lower tier SEC team and you're doing it on your homefield.

If you lost at MSU, you'd still have a chance to pickup an unexpected win at home against a more talented team to negate that loss.

I'm not so sure about your last sentence, 18. You were probably just a kid at the time. But I remember us getting spanked by North Carolina 28-0 in our 1979 home opener. And we had George Rogers at the time. We went on to win 8 games that season for the first time ever.
A disgraceful loss anyway and wound up by losing another bowl game. Our mediocrity reached a fractionally higher level even if we did slip by a sorry UPC team that year. As a fanbase, we have been disgustingly easy to beguile.

I say it’s the most important game because a loss here virtually cements a bad season. A win doesn’t guarantee a great season, but it does guarantee going to Alabama 3-0.

That's if Mississippi State isn't good. What if Mississippi State is last year's Vanderbilt?

It's just too early in the season to say one game makes or breaks the season when there are nine more games.

Mississippi State looks better than we thought. Oklahoma looks worse than expected. Tennessee doesn't look like a world beater.

We just don't know how things are going to play out over the next couple months.

I want to say I don't know how they are as bad as they are being the state university. But, then I remember our record from last season.
They are the only major program in a state which, while not populous, has a lot of wealth within its borders. They should be competing better.
