How important is the Mississippi State game?

Honestly, I think the season and Beamer’s job are both on the line this Saturday. We lose and we likely go on to a second losing season. The AD starts his search midway. So a win this week is imperative.
For those who think I’ve overstated things - just wait and see. I’ve been a Gamecock longer than Beamer has been alive.

It's a fair assertion.

There are a lot of unknowns at this point in the season with how good other teams we face may/may not be. However, it's very hard to see how we manage even a winning season with a loss to MSU on the books, much less a good season.

I've said in previous posts, Beamer can go 5-7 and not get fired as long as he beats Clemson and manages an upset over a big favorite.

If Beamer manages to beat Bama and Clemson and goes 5-7, he will be safe.

If we don't beat Mississippi State, I'm not sure where 3 other wins come from.

Arkansas and UK are two more gimmes, that means we really only need one big upset or Clemson win for Beamer to be around for at least another year.

A Clemson win will save his job no matter what the record is.

So you think 3-9 (0-9) with a win over Clemson saves his job in Year 6?

No, and I don't see any way that happens. 5-7 (the 2 cupcakes plus Arkansas and UK) and a win over Clemson and he is safe in my opinion.
IMHO, I see a Win vs Miss st, this team will win at least 8 games (momentum and confidence) a loss to Miss st, they will be very lucky to win 5 games (Beamer may lose team as rumblings of a coaching change increase)!! So needless to say how IMPORTANT this game is!!

So, you think a win against a team that was pretty much universally expected to be a win will give the team momentum and confidence that will lead to at least 8 wins? Let's go with that.

A win against MSSt gets to 3 wins, Arkansas and KY will be 5 wins, what are the other 3 wins? OU might be winnable and Clemson looks beatable this year. Other than those two, I don't see any more win probabilities.

I think a win over MSSt helps increase the odds of getting to 6 wins. A loss will make getting 6 wins difficult.

I guess you are going to dodge the question about where the other 3 wins will come from. OK, keep those garnet goggles on.

They dynamic has changed. Maybe MSU isn't actually all that good but the universal perception right now is that they have a great QB and could be an extremely good team.

If we win, we'll have beaten a team that most perceive to be quite good at the moment. That certainly helps with confidence.

A win is definitely better than a loss, but I have a hard time seeing a win becoming some sort of springboard to an 8+ win season. I do think a win probably means a 6 win season is likely.

I don't view it as a springboard to 8 wins. But I don't see path to 8 wins that doesn't include a win over MSU.

A loss to MSU probably means a 5 win season. It won't be because of a lack of confidence or momentum, but because the team just isn't that good.

Well you have obviously never played organized sports if you don’t realize how much momentum and confidence mean to a team!! lol. So I can not even comment to your post. And the other wins could be Oky, could be Tenn could be A&M.

I don't really know about the confidence issue. Losing to MSU would certainly hit morale. You go into the Bama game feeling low and get blown out and maybe head into the UK game with no confidence.

Things can spiral.

Real ADs, not Ray Tanner, always have a list of coaches they are interested in. Back door channels. I think back door channels is how we got Briles. Beamer didn't hire him. Beamer is not capable of hiring a qualified offensive coordinator who probably would feel more qualified to be the head coach instead.

That is what i said why this game was so important.... Losing at Bama isnt a moral killer if you are 3-1 coming out of there..

I've played plenty of organized sports and no matter how much confidence or momentum a team thinks it has, it doesn't help much if the team isn't as good as the team they face. I remember the 2018 UGA game at WB, we had all the confidence in the world that the heat and Sandman and all the noise in the stadium was going to make UGA wilt. We had crushed Coastal in week 1 and were ranked in the top 25. The fans were on fire and WB was rocking. Confidence and momentum was very high.

UGA came in and stomped us. The game wasn't even competitive after the first quarter.

MSSt should be a win for us. If it is, it doesn't mean 8 wins are on the horizon, it means were aren't a bad team this year.

Must win for the team to have a chance at a decent season. Must win for Beamer- his tenure is shaky at best - needs to demonstrate that he can move the team to the upper half of the SEC and stay there.

The more I hear about MS, the more I think they fall flat on their face this weekend.

Minnesota gave them their 15 minutes, now they go back to the reality of the SEC basement.
