I think others do. I do not think PSU has money management issues right now. It looks like they have a smart GM and they’re conservative with their money.
I think PSU does indeed have money issues which dictates their management style. I'll reserve judgement on how "smart" the GM is until 2027 and 2028 when the impact of allowing virtually all of the top recruits in Pa. to go elsewhere manifests itself.
Spending less on talent than Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon and Indiana.....about equal with Washington, UCLA and Nebraska doesn't portend "excellence at the highest level" or "the national championship our fans deserve."
It seems to me it puts Coach Campbell right back in the position he was at ISU...trying to do more with less. How'd that work out? 50-40 in conference.

And why is PSU is having money issues? That's a rhetorical question. IMHO this university is the most mismanaged of all the Big Ten and maybe the whole country. Think about it. We have the 2nd highest tuition and the lowest academic rating in the Big Ten. Naturally this all permeates the athletic department.

Have you read the articles detailing their recruiting philosophy?
I have never seen any rational discussion of what "being conservative with their money" means.
You made that statement - so I thought you might have some insight.

Do you know what you meant by that?
I have never known PSU (either the University, or the athletics programs) to be "conservative with their money" - at least not by any common or reasonable interpretation of "conservative with their money".
Maybe you can share some insight?

In any organization, where you have incompetence, it tends to spread (particularly if the incompetence is at the top). For obvious reasons, obviously. :)

FWIW: The gist of your statement is - obviously - correct. But I don't think there are any Big Ten publics (privates are, obviously, operated in an entirely different purview) that have higher tuition than PSU (either net cost, or in-state sticker price).
I do believe there are a couple with lower academic ratings - thank goodness for the Big Ten adding Nebraska and Oregon :) . Unless you are talking about "academics" as it relates to the football program - where, IIRC, PSU is currently at the bottom... but that is a small and relatively meaningless item.

When it comes to D1 "college" football the term "student athlete" is an oxymoron. After decades of pride in high achievement in both academics and football (Success with Honor)....PSU's pitiful administration tried desperately to avoid the phrase and coined "Comprehensive Excellence." Any semblance of what Joe Paterno stood for is long gone. 40%-50% of the current PSU roster played elsewhere last season. Approximately that percentage will be somewhere else next season (not a knock on PSU, a commentary on the mess that is college football). Paying players is difficult for many PSU potential donors to embrace, while the only difference in SEC schools is it is now "legal."
But PSU fans seem to want it both ways....excellence at the highest level with a #19-26 wallet. Perhaps Kraft should have been honest about resources instead of adding to the expectations of a segment of the fanbase that is entitled and delusional.

Does that really happen? They’re just getting rid of the player entirely. No $, no roster spot. Free it all up for someone else. I think it’s funny that Texas already has issues with cap money. I assumed some teams would mismanage and have problems.
I don't know exactly what's happening in Texas but we used to have walkon players who actually paid their own way. I can certainly see a situation where marginal players would accept a full ride scholarship but no NIL.

And you know this based on what. Sure cant be any past history, because there isn't any.

Indiana has landed two four star recruits. They have really spend money on one kid this cycle regarding HS recruits. It safe to say they've spend a lot less than PSU. A lot of guys like you on here always declaring that the sky is falling and PSU is no longer going to be competitive, when there is no history going back on the current HS recruiting model more than really two years

Why not just enjoy the ride and watch what PSU does in the off season regarding the transfer portal, before declaring PSU a team that doesn't even pretend that it wants to compete at the highest level. Never occurs to you that the money PSU could have spent on guys like Spell, Borque and the three WRs might end up going to two your three guys that are going to come in here and start in 2027, which is far more valuable than HS kids. IU has shown that in spades.

Hey, I got good idea. Lets wait to see what is going to happen, before declaring that it is going to be a dissaster.

I can see it now. PSU is playing the national semis and you are on here going. Well, our recruiting stinks so don't get used to seasons like this because PSU doesn't even want to play football at this level.

Wake me up when PSU signs the #1 Linebacker, Edge, WR. QB or RB in the portal. Wait and see isn't the purpose of a message board. It isn't a good formula for improving roster talent either.
Ignoring one of the three:
HS recruiting
Roster Retention
Portal enrichment

is not a recipe for success. Pretending that poor recruiting is part of some grand design, is simply an excuse by fans who wish to dream.

Most rankings I see have PSU between 9th and 12th in the BiG. Of course I could see things being different for football players than it is for the overall student population.

I suspect there is a ceiling because it's a state university that is supposed to support a large swath of PA residents.

Some will say tuition is high because of lower state subsidies but I don't know if that's accurate

They have a GM. They have a budget, they determine what they’ll pay, if someone tries to renegotiate they move onto someone else. It’s been addressed in numerous articles and on this board. Ok, satisfied? You have an agenda. You’re unnecessarily aggressive on a fun board. You’re on ignore.

The issue with PSU not matching the amount that some other schools are willing to pay has been addressed many times. There are several factors as to why we do what we do. First and foremost is that we don't have any big money donors who are willing to cover the cost of paying players directly, as some other schools do. We do have big money donors but they choose to spend their money on tangible things like building projects and such. Also, some other schools choose to allocate a ridiculous amount of money on a handful of players at the expense of their entire roster which is a very shortsighted way of using your resources (see Colorado).

You really dont get it. If you are developing kids. You dont need those guys.

Outside of Mendoza, IU really didn't have a ton of high end NFL talent, but they had an entire team that is draftable, or borderline NFL talent or just darn good college players.

We are going to need guys that fill the voids. For this year the dlineman we got that had nothing to do with ISU or PSU along with Riker from Texas State are likely going to be very key regarding how good PSU is going to be, and its obvious that you dont get it.

Peoples might end up as a huge addition. Was he the number one anything?

Peoples was OSU's #4 running back at the end of the season. If that's your plan to improve over the past decade, I suggest you go back to the drawing board. EVERYONE develops players on their roster. Who is better....the 3 star that improves or the 4/5 star that improves?
There are about 100 fan bases in college football that insist they will follow the Indiana model and win big. LOL
