One of the dangers of the portal is that you are paying premium (often a significant percentage of your total yearly payroll) for a player that you really do not know beyond statistics and game film.

Where are they getting their $$$?

Weekly allowance?
no idea. These gambling sites offer something like $100 free for signing up or something like that and then who knows after. Soccer player at one of the schools I work at had to quit the team to get a job. He posted something on social media and said he was already down a couple thousand and was borrowing from friends. Head coach saw it and told his parents, kid would have been a D3 player too.

Wow, he potentially owes Cincy $1M.

Me when a team tries to enforce a contract on these players who think rules don't apply to them:

Reports: U Cincinnati knew of Sorsby’s gambling problem before the 2025 season and let him play, that’s something they were obligated to report to the NCAA.
Still feels like some other big shoe to drop compared to what has been reported. Especially if the "Cincinnati knew" story is true

Life hack I learned much much too late: Seek out people willing to call out your bull ****. 100% Sorsby had a few people out there trying to rein him in, people who can now tell him told you so.

So very sad.

Who can resist some Turkish basketball action?
I've definitely arb'd some Turkish basketball games at some point in my life (and many of those Euro leagues that would be slow to move at certain books back in the day). Never found an edge in the Nathan's Hot Dog contest though.

So does this mean that TT is going to make a big trade for a qb or are they up the creek without a paddle? By the way, this couldn't happen to a more deserving program that basically is trying to spend their way to a NC; they're basically like an European soccer team that's run by some Saudi sovereign wealth fund. Finally, if every aspect of college football now is professional, schools probably should be allowed to engage in trades. After all, it's no less preposterous than schools needing to maintain a NFL payroll to be competitive, and we all know that most of these players are mercenaries who neither care where they go to school nor actually do go to school..

It’s a sad but fascinating story. Imagine how many cfb players are wrapped up in significant gambling in the nil era.
How many college athletes are scrambling around trying to cover their gambling tracks. That he was using surrogates as cover under cuts his mental health claim to a certain degree. Implies he knew he was doing something wrong and taking active steps to avoid detection

I’m sure it’s all just a misunderstanding.

I would imagine many are doing so. These players are getting big money in the nil era. How many of them are unable to resist temptations like gambling or worse.

Sounds like he was using that as justification as well. It wasn’t about the money, was making big NIL bucks so was gambling for fun till it got away from me

I have zero sympathy for them. They're being given a great opportunity to be paid while getting a free education. If they screw up they deserve the consequences of their actions just like everyone else.

He made countless bad choices and shouldn't be allowed to play football at any level. He can't be trusted.

Best of luck to him. Hopefully he got a real education while chasing money.

At this point, why would any team want this player? I guess that TT now would sell their soul to the devil because he's their best option, but this obviously is a very sick individual who needs a lot of professional help to overcome his addiction rather than playing a sport. I fully expect the judge to rule in his favor because he probably wants this kid to play for good ole Texas Tech.

The last time that any entity accepted a NCAA decision was probably the dopes who ran PSU in 2012.

One thing that doesn't add up in this whole thing...the fact that he's reported to have wagered $90k over 4 years, married with the comment that "Sorsby transferred more than $60,000 to two friends to cover bets made on his behalf." Like, what? Was he the least successful gambler of all time (by an order of magnitude), or is something wrong in those facts?

It's probably because he's a talented player and teams are willing to roll the dice that after his program, he's past his addiction as a low stakes gambler (that of course broke rules that you can't break and not face a punishment). It's the same reason teams were willing to take a chance on Chris Herron, Josh Gordon, Aldon Smith, etc.

In today's stunning announcement, Judge Arthur Schlichter...I know. No piling on. I hope this kid gets whatever help he needs to lead a somewhat normal life.
