One of the dangers of the portal is that you are paying premium (often a significant percentage of your total yearly payroll) for a player that you really do not know beyond statistics and game film.

Where are they getting their $$$?

Weekly allowance?
no idea. These gambling sites offer something like $100 free for signing up or something like that and then who knows after. Soccer player at one of the schools I work at had to quit the team to get a job. He posted something on social media and said he was already down a couple thousand and was borrowing from friends. Head coach saw it and told his parents, kid would have been a D3 player too.

Wow, he potentially owes Cincy $1M.

Me when a team tries to enforce a contract on these players who think rules don't apply to them:

Reports: U Cincinnati knew of Sorsby’s gambling problem before the 2025 season and let him play, that’s something they were obligated to report to the NCAA.
Still feels like some other big shoe to drop compared to what has been reported. Especially if the "Cincinnati knew" story is true

Life hack I learned much much too late: Seek out people willing to call out your bull ****. 100% Sorsby had a few people out there trying to rein him in, people who can now tell him told you so.
