I posed the question of a wrestle off at 141 earlier but went on to say I felt like Braeden would win it in a close match. Right now I'm not so sure...BUT Cael is riding with Scooter so I am wrong and he is right 😂. His decision making is basically 99.9 percent correct all time. The .01 might be Shak instead of Ant. 😂.

The gassing is now a concern even though we were clearly training through. I think they will put something together for March that might factor in to management of the match energy wise. I THINK he will be alright but helI I have no idea. I'm still traumatized by Andrew Alton and I immediately jump off the top of the building anytime I see one of our guys gassing so I hope that's an overreaction thing on my end.

Revisiting 125, if this is the McGowan that led eventual champ Vince Robinson in March with 5 seconds to go in round 2, I’m the 67-year-old spitting image of Ryan Gosling who scrambles up steep hikes like a mountain goat.
As for tonight’s demolition, my first time listening to Jeff Byers calling it live (loved that cherry-on-top interview with Levi).
What the hell took me so long?

I’m 57 and go to the gym every day. I swear I get injuries like this all the time. I’m doing PT for 2 things right now. You would think that being active is a good way to stay healthy, but I am coming to the conclusion that it’s not that simple. Getting old sucks.
I'm 82 and work out 3 days a week. I need ice and Motrin when I get home, but I'm thankful I can still do it.

Hang in there, it usually pays off in the long term.

This is who he is. Nolf was very similar in case you forgot. You get a window in the first period of maybe 20-30 seconds and then the window is closed for the rest of the match. Could it cost him? Absolutely: against MAYBE 2 guys, probably just one in Joy. But if it's even in the second, it's over no matter who it is.
Joy lost tonight

You may be overdoing it, I have noticed as the body ages it requires much more time for recovery. Maybe cut the number of days in the gym by half, need to work out smarter not harder

Did someone introduce the assassin move this year in the room? I don't remember seeing it used by PSU wrestlers before.

Assassin has been around for a long time - essentially a modified head lock (a head and shoulder lock - upward arm over head and lower arm under near armpit).... you lift and step over.... then walk it through. You don't see it that often in HS because it requires good length and very good power/strength relative to opponent (you're kind of out of riding position as you set the move up as you're not on top of the bottom wrestler - you're way high and off to the side.... so if the bottom man has a power advantage, they can easily escape before you can step over).

Anyway, I believe it was Ben Askren that really popularized the move in the early 2000s and used it often throughout his Folk and Freestyle career.

Thanks for the advice, really.

one thing I started doing is going lighter weights and doing longer eccentric movements- so on a bench press spend more time allowing the weight to lower in a controlled way, and still go to failure. I think this helps.

I didn't like the way the ref called stalling at all tonight. Yes, against Scooter - that was fine. He was more concerned, it seemed, with counting shots.... if you didn't shoot after your opponent shot 3-4 times, you got a stall call. He called action when you walked back to the edge and then was shot OB. 125 was shameful and should have never made it to the 3rd period. Not only was he going to his knees, but he was going backwards to boot! I couldn't believe what I was watching. If you back to the edge you should not be allowed to stay there.... if for any reason you go out it should be stalling vs action as you created the OB opportunity.
Levi may be the youngest 2x natty champ. We should look that up. Those 4 years went by fast.
Nothing else to say about the match - great domination and wrestling. Oh yeah, really like how PJ lifts the opponents foot with his foot in the over/under (vs trying to step in and put legs in) when on the mat.

I thought it was one of the better officiating performances I saw this year. Called stalls in the 1st period just as quickly as the 3rd. I thought he forced action and when there wasn't, he called stalling. I thought he could have dinged Scooter with another one when he was behind standing (seemed a lot longer than 5 seconds without an actual attempt at a return). Good no call in the Van Ness match when the brick was thrown (I think Dubuque thought the Merkle was fully locked up when they had the side headlock, but Van Ness did a good job keeping the leg out). Overall, I thought he called a good match. I can't really think of any calls I disagreed with for either side.

It's officially an issue now for Braeden and gassing. Almost out of time to fix it so maybe a strategy change for March?
"So your saying there's a chance?" Scooter will be ready.

Don't know why its taking them so long. Its a DQ.
The ref lost track. On the call that should have been "2" the ref put one finger up and the scoreboard put 2, so the score was showing correctly but the ref was one behind. He put 2 fingers up initially on the the call that earned the "DQ". He should have DQed him at the end of the second.

Don't know if he thought he could just stall his way to less bonus, but that was a weird one. In 36 years in this sport, I don't think I have ever seen someone score 7 points without a single TD, Reversals, or Escape
Actually only 5.

I think Cael's post match interview was dead on. They (ref's) seem to count shots vs true stalling which is not trying to score.. or something like that. This ref did that imo. Couldn't look at him the same after the 1st match.... We all have talked about being on your knees... but on your knees AND going backwards...AND not trying to get off of the OB line...

assassins are also illegal until high school( i think, maybe until college?) they are not taught much. also if done incorrectly with an arm across the throat it will be called every time

16 seconds left in the 2nd period, and Duke lets his opponent go.

There are times when you need to keep an opponent down to win a match, but so far, PJ has shown little interest in riding.

I know Duke is a Fr and I'm nitpicking a bit, but our stars have always been strong in all positions.
They don't all start as great college riders. They all seem to eventually get there though.

I have tried eating half a bag......but it never seems to work. :). True story: when my son was in the Navy and the Eisenhower got sent to the Mediterranean...... I shipped my son a few bags of Kettle BBQ. He shared them with mates who had never seen or tasted them. For the rest of their record-breaking time on water without a port stop......I was the Middlesworth "drug mule". Thay were extremely popular :)
I had an uncle who lived/worked in Austin, then Boca, then Raliegh. I would pack up half a dozen Middlesworth tubs (half plain, half barbq) and mail them every couple months.

197- #1 Josh Barr vs. Conor McCloskey

Period 1:
Circling, tying up & hand fighting. Barr quickly drops to a leg & finishes the TD, 3-0. Out of bounds & restart. McCloskey is still down. He turns, but Barr stays with him & gets him bellied out. Barr looks for a crossface cradle, but can't lock it up. Barr cuts McCloskey, 3-1. McCloskey shoots, Barr counters & gets another TD, 6-1. Barr gets McCloskey bellied out again. Barr hits an assassin. Barr goes over 1-min of riding time & then gets the FALL!!!

Josh Barr FALL Conor McCloskey (1:29)

Team Score

PSU: 45
PU: 0
I told the guy sitting behind me that there are a ton of really great wrestlers on this team, but Barr is the one who makes me say "wow" more often than anybody else.
