US News 2022 Rankings are out

What has happened in the last 20 years? Ole Miss's freshman scholarships are so far ahead of State's. In 2000, I got more money from State than Ole Miss. If I was a freshman this year, Ole Miss would offer $26,000 per year to State's $18,000. And that's before college of engineering...

Mississippi Today on state financial aid overhaul…

I love how the headline writer focused on the wrong thing. Keenum is right. Students with a 17 ACT probably don't belong at Mississippi State. But reading the article, I disagree with his proposed changes to the grant program. I think grants should be need-based, not merit-based. Mississippi...

Planning out my watch schedule for today.

ESPN wants eyeballs on its main channel at noon. The Vandy game is on ESPNU, following two AAC games. Nobody likes noon games, I know, but Georgia-Arkansas is in the bigger slot, as far as ESPN is concerned.

Question for the football rules experts (so no SEC refs need reply)

Contact within five yards of the line of scrimmage is an NFL rule, not college. The NCAA rule is: "Defensive players may ward off or legally block an eligible pass receiver until that player occupies the same yard line as the defender or until the opponent could not possibly block him...

Have you ever dreamed about a State game?

About 17 years ago, I dreamed that the State volleyball team won a set against Florida. Not the match, just a set. From that alone I was able to determine that I was dreaming. Here we are in 2021, and State finally beat Florida. Wait, am I still dreaming?

    Steve Shaw

Steve Shaw's last year as SEC Coordinator of Officials was 2019. The job is now held by John McDaid.

Got my gray Bama CWS NC shirt today

From everything I've heard, one should never buy anything under the Fanatics brand. It's almost always garbage.

Home team tomorrow? Us or opponent?

It's whoever has been home team the fewest number of times. If tied, coin flip. State has had 2 home games. Campbell 2. VCU 1. So if VCU wins, they are home in Game 1. Game 2 would be a coin flip. If Campbell wins, Game 1 is a coin flip. Game 2, the loser of the coin flip is home.

Best games you’ve seen in Starkville

2004 Men's Basketball vs Kentucky is the loudest game I've ever been to, in any sport. Heartbreaking loss at the buzzer, but an amazing game and atmosphere. The 2002 men's basketball team had three exciting home wins. The OT win over Kentucky. The OT win over Tennessee. And the free throws in...

Would this be the most palatable solution....

Of course In God We Trust must be on the flag. Mississippians aren't happy unless they are excluding some group of people. Not allowed to target blacks or gays anymore, so they'll settle for atheists.

    New Flag options for MS.

If it has to have words, the first one is OK. Still, would really prefer no words. I won't even acknowledge the seal flag, but that's probably what they'll go with. Some good designs here: https://twitter.com/RockyVaughan/status/1275391284253995009?s=19 I can't figure out how to attach an...

    The Latest From Jackson...

I mean, it will. But Mississippi probably has the lowest percentage of atheists in the U.S., so no one will care about them. I'd never embrace a seal flag, but whatever. I don't live in the state anymore, anyway. Just change it.

    The Latest From Jackson...

Any flag up for discussion should follow the basic principles of flag design: http://nava.org/good-flag-bad-flag/ Any flag with words should be immediately discarded. The Stennis Flag isn't my favorite design, but it's good enough. I fear any attempt to improve upon it will only result in...

Tate is weak on the flag.

Remove the words and numbers, and it's perfect.

    Football rules question...

Football official here. The result of the play is a touchback. If the ball hits the ground in the end zone untouched by the receiving team, it is a dead ball and automatic touchback. In the Tulsa-SMU clip above, the question is did SMU touch the ball before it hit the ground in the end zone...
