It was obviously Cal trying to get a raise because Cal's agent stopped talking to them the second UK upped the contract and didnt even give UCLA a chance to come back and offer more.

also consider the source....... UCLA's people are the ones that got the story out .... they arent going to back down now and say oh we were just lying... Cal wasnt that interested in us after all...... lol

If you think John Calipari made demands to take the UCLA job and then they couldn't buy out Rick Barnes and settled for Mick Cronin, I don't know what to tell you.
It makes sense if UCLA valued Cal more than Barnes. If Cals demands were paid out over time and UCLA felt they could afford it over the course of 5-6 years it makes sense. Maybe UCLA wasn't willing to pay an 8 figure lump sum buy-out up front for Barnes but they were willing to give Cal a bunch of things that didn't involve a huge up front payment.

Calipari is a businessman first and foremost. He did not get where he is by allowing new challenges and opportunities to pass him by without exploring the possibilities.

The bottom line is, he continues to be the coach at UK and life goes forward - until the next challenge comes. I don't blame him for keeping his options open. The Kentucky job is a grind and can wear you down. As much as he enjoys the prospect of coaching here, he will leave eventually. I just hope the fans act responsibly and treat him with respect when that time comes.

I have no doubt they were willing to pay Cal what he wanted.

What I meant was that there's no way UCLA had Cal on the hook, meeting all of his requests, and essentially about to hire him, and then ended up with Mick Cronin.

Cal laid out his terms, and while UCLA was calling around to make sure they could meet them, he signed a new contract at UK. Everyone but UCLA knows he used them for the new contract. They're leaking details to try and save face, just like the leaked it the first time to make the job look more attractive.

I agree. UCLA thinks they are on the same level as UK, Duke or UNC and they are leaking this information to try and prove it.

"Contrary to the widespread narrative that the Bruins had been played by a master tactician, the search committee felt that Calipari’s interest had been genuine, said a person close to the committee."

[laughing]
Once my small, chubby friend met one of those monster energy drink girls at a convention. She talked to him for literally minutes. Smiled and everything. No man has ever been more convinced that there was genuine interest towards him.

You can just watch Calipari’s interview with Dan Patrick to get the info straight. It’s a hilarious interview. Patrick brings up all these “facts” about the UCLA offer and Calipari very convincingly shoots everything down. Dan Patrick ends the interview with “sorry it didn’t work out with UCLA”. I was rolling, and Cal just had that “you son of *****” grin on his face.

I think cal never planned on leaving but he wanted to use the offer for leverage for us, the fan base. He knows how a certain % of our fan base isn’t a big fan of his but they were all sweating bullets at the thought of cal leaving. They wouldn’t understand the importance of cal unless he was gone. Cal has always been the man for the job and always will be. I hope we have him another 10 years or more.

Is this really news. I’m sure Cal loves UK but if UCLA offered double everything he’d be a fool not to think hard about it and wouldn’t surprise if he accepted if that was the case. No different than the rest of us. I’m sure many love living in UK if they grew up there and want to stay there forever but if California offered you double what you make and would pay for moving, your house, etc you'd also be a fool not to consider and potentially take it

If you had a chance to negotiate additional amenities for your job and a raise by leveraging a different job opportunity with another company wouldn’t you??? It’s not personal it’s just really good business and of course UCLA is going to try and leak stuff so it’s less embarrassing that they were used.

How is this talking crazy?

They're reporting on news because that's their job.

Why wouldn't you negotiate and see how far they are willing to go? Obviously we'd all rather he didn't even talk to anyone. He didn't go. No big deal. People are going to blow this way out of proportion though.
Absolutely, you don't say no immediately in these cases. Why would you? You listen to the offer. If you're in Calipari's situation, you have the conversation. You talk about what it would take to get you out of your current situation. These are just conversations more than negotiations. This doesn't bother me one bit.

I think it's rather funny that some act as if another company come to them with a open checkbook that they wouldn't atleast talk to them.
Yes but I think it’s a little greedy on his part if it was only about money. I mean the guy makes 9 million a year. How much does one really need? Not really fair to compare the average working American with Cal.
