But, wasn't Cal always going to be UK's coach? At least until he decides he doesn't want to hold that position? Surely no one believes Mitch would have the balls to fire him, right?
So, at the end of the day how does a lifetime contract actually change the narrative? The paid ambassador thing just sounds like a nice retirement perk. Cal will have a office that he rarely see's and UK will get the benefits of being associated with the newest ESPN analyst....I suspect Cal will get a studio gig in Bristol, Connecticut when he does decide to retire.
So, what's this really about? Cal has always said he wanted to retire at UK. So, maybe a lifetime contract ensures that nothing or no one will ever derail that plan. Meaning, perhaps it's Mitch Barnhart that may not be at UK till the day Cal decides to retire. Cal likes to have total control and that wouldn't necessarily be guaranteed if MB were to take another job before Cal's targeted retirement date (whenever that is) comes 'round. You never know.
But, there is a LOT of money involved in Cal staying another 5-6 years. Even more if he stays longer. I just hope he realizes that he does need to make some changes to remain relevant over that period of time. OAD is about to end and it will be interesting to see how Cal and the program make the transition. Lifetime contracts rarely bring the bounty both sides hope for. Should be interesting to watch it all unfold.
