First, let me say I hope Cal stays 5 more years (or as long as he wants).

But--and this isn't just recency bias; there's been 'something' to this guy to me for the last couple years--I think the Beard guy at TTech might just be the guy.

* Relatively young (46) -- only early 50s when Cal decides it's time.
* Defense-minded.
* Offense is suited to long, athletic 'positionless' dudes.
* Seems to be a good X's/O's guy -- has had big wins in shootouts and grind-it-out games.

Don't know anything about his recruiting skills, but given they don't seem to have a bunch of 5-stars, seems like he's extremely good at player development.

But I'm no "Basketball Benny" -- any of you who are more knowledgeable than I think this is a possibility?

Who will be your successor?

Beard prolly wint leave TT anytime soon. He left unlv at the alter to go to TT...he had been a long time asst. there and has young kids drom a previous marriage growing up in the area.

So while the name soesnt carry much luster, dude seems to love it there for various reasons.

Oh and his team is not at all the same team from last year. Rhey lost many seniors from that team and replaced them.with transfers. So he has dine this with a newish roster I believe I read.

Unlv sure loved him too and were very sad when he bolted b4 coaching a game to TT. He seems to be the real deal though. Be curious to see if he leaves Lubbock eventually.

Beard will go to TX once it opens up. Word is Shaka knows it’s not a great fit there and he’ll look for other openings.

Also, let's be cautious about jumping on the bandwagon of a coach at a Texas school who had a good couple years highlighted by a big tournament win. That's how we ended up with Billy G.
Lol--I thought of the same exact connection after original post!

...hopefully the Billy G experience (weren't they at Woodstock?) taught us to be "10% tougher" in our vetting when that time comes (and hopefully that's a long way away).

I was just thinking the same thing
And it’s always during tourney time
Sorry I offended everyone by expressing something that hit me about what might be a good move for us in the FUTURE (and notice, I stated it that way in original post).

I guess the logical reason these pop up during tourney time is
1) that's when bball is on the biggest stage
2) that's when people like me (fans, but not bball bennies) pay more attention
3) that's when you notice certain coaches might be attractive b/c they get their teams ready in March

Nothing more nefarious than those things.

Sorry that to some of you speculating for the future is tantamount to the infamous Rex tweet the night of the NC game vs. UConn. Not my intention I assure you.

Why is it that when people say something dumb that takes off like a lead balloon, they almost invariably fall back on the tired old "oh I guess you people are just offended" dodge?
Because, well, people DO seem upset that I brought up something I thought would be relevant, interesting, etc. --- but in your estimation, "something dumb" I suppose -- and I'm wanting to APOLOGIZE for getting people upset by using my freedom of speech on a free message board.

I'm trying to be CIVIL -- not being 'accusatory' of them.

But since bringing up topics I (and apparently a few others) thought would be relevant/interesting related to the basketball team I follow seems to be only thought of by some as "something dumb" -- be they 'offended' as some seemed by the timing or not -- I will refrain from ever posting anything here again. I'm sure the Rupps Rafters board will be much more "enlightening" without my "dumb" posts. You guys got it from here on out.

Again, SORRY to offend those of you who were offended...twas not my intention. I'll go in peace and Go Cats!

I will play along for the fun of it. If Earned Not Given transfers, i will be scared to death. It will happen one day but hope he stays 7-8 more years. (CAl, not Brad.)

But why not Mark few ? Fun style, can recruit, even JUCO's. he and Cal are best friends, i would say when that day comes, Cal will maybe talk to Few about the possibility.

I doubt Few would leave but if we needed a coach NOW I'd be happy with him. He's only 4 years younger than Cal so if it's 5+ years later, I don't want to hire a coach already in his 60s.

Don't think BCG ever went anywhere near an Elite 8 or ever recruited even at UK the likes of Smith and Culver.

Small sample size, agreed, but anyone who thinks Beard doesn't have a higher ceiling than BCG has an agenda.

Texas has a lot of HS ballers. Think I'd stay in that state if I was him. Culver was a 3 star from Lubbock. Think Cal would ever look at a 3 star? Maybe one from Kentucky. What was Dom?

Even though the BCG hire was terrible, his 2007 Texas A&M team lost by one point on a pair of free throws to 5th ranked Memphis in the Sweet Sixteen. Acie Law had a chance to put them up by three but missed a breakaway lay up with like 30 seconds left. So while he didn't make an Elite Eight, BCG was really close once.

Just not a UK.

I don't even want to think about it. I don't care what great names we come up with there is a 1000% chance that Mitch will get it wrong. People can go through the motions of believing that Mitch is a shrewd AD if they want to because things are going good at the moment but look at home many years of incompetent decision making that had to take place for us to reach this point. It literally took 20 years of Billy G's and Jokers for us to finally have a legitimate SEC group of coaches. There is basically no chance that Mitch will get the next hire correct.

Would you rather have pride and get another Tubby Smith...

Or hire a proven elite coach with multiple national titles and final 4's....and did it at a traditionally awful program before he arrived?

I'm about winning. Keep your pride.

I like Tony Bennett although I know that's controversial. Some don't like his offense although I would call it disciplined vs slow. He's young/charismatic/great guy, his teams play great defense, wins in the ACC (with UVA), and apparently turned down offer to coach IU while at WSU.

Good lord. It wasn’t THAT bad a post. [laughing]

Yes, it’s been brought up a lot and it’s too early to dub anyone the next coach. But I’d say Beard is one to keep an eye on for a while.

Ohh, I see. Just cuz you made the top 25 posters list, you think you can be the judge now :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

But I just meant his original post. It is a kinda silly time to bring up the subject, the day of a sweet 16 match. But I just thought it was funny that it turned into a “bash the OP” thread, while it wasn’t really THAT big a deal.

I mean I'm fine with Calipari for another 10-20 years

But Billy Donovan is the best one out there...maybe we get Brad Stevens?

This is Kentucky. We let pride get in the way in 2007 and thought we were "too good" to get a guy like Calipari....at Kentucky you get the sure thing.

I will deal with whomever we get when it happens. I just hope I don't have to hear how this job ages you 7 years per year. I really don't see anyone wanting to come here when he talks that crap all the time. He don't do social media but he thinks all of us won't stand for anything but a championship or win by 20 everytime out. I won't miss that speech I have heard 1000 times a year. Other than that, I like what he does for the kids and the program. My rant for Game Day.
