First, let me say I hope Cal stays 5 more years (or as long as he wants).

But--and this isn't just recency bias; there's been 'something' to this guy to me for the last couple years--I think the Beard guy at TTech might just be the guy.

* Relatively young (46) -- only early 50s when Cal decides it's time.
* Defense-minded.
* Offense is suited to long, athletic 'positionless' dudes.
* Seems to be a good X's/O's guy -- has had big wins in shootouts and grind-it-out games.

Don't know anything about his recruiting skills, but given they don't seem to have a bunch of 5-stars, seems like he's extremely good at player development.

But I'm no "Basketball Benny" -- any of you who are more knowledgeable than I think this is a possibility?

Why is a replacement for Cal always brought up when some coach has a big game?
Like I said, I know this'll sound like recency bias, but Beard has impressed me for the last couple years.

That TT program was a dumpster fire before he got there if I remember correctly (poor Tubby!). Took him a year but has gotten 2nd & 1st in Big 12 and now back-to-back elite 8s.

I don't know...I just have a feeling about him he'd be a good fit in quite a few ways.

Texas Tech is about to go to the Elite-8. Of course, we need to talk about their coach next. Rick Barnes name died a few hours ago. Dude was very popular on here recently. Not sure why that stopped. We are always looking for the next best thing.

A&M might be in play if Beard wants to leave Lubbock.

Guessing he'll stay.

I'll tell you this.. I don't want a coach that's won with largely one roster. Whoever it is.. I want a guy that has had great success two or three times in a span greater than 4 years apart.

Chris beard having a great run now.. But I need to see more.
That's a very good point.

He lost his best players from last year's team I think. I know Zhaire Smith went first round at least and now Culver will be a top 10 pick.

We are in a glory period of UK basketball and your mind goes to who’s the next coach?

Do yourself a favor and turn the TV and computer off forever.

Sorry, dude. You're probably right.

It's an off-night though. Forgive me for letting my mind wander some.

I apoligize. I was a little harsh. Honestly I came into the thread a little miffed because of other similar ones. You had some substance and a fair point. My bad.

Tubby actually turned them around. They were god awful during his first two seasons and then they made the tournament in 2016.

They've gone to another level with Beard at the helm, growing into a real contender.

Lucky enough to have Cal and we have a stupid post like this. No wonder Cal says coaching at Kentucky is like dog years. TT looks good right now, but I have said all season Michigan wasn't anything special. Let's see if he can win a big game like the next one. Dude reminds me of BCG.

Yeah but this is still largely the same team. I'd guess 80% or more returned from last year? Texas Tech is great and all, but I want to see how Beard is in 2021.. heck, even 2020. But we've seen too many coaches have these 2-3 year spurts where the team was largely the same.. only to fall back to earth later.

Look at Greg Marshall. Ok WSU had a few good years.. but those three years from 2012 to 2014 had Early, Baker and VanVleet.

Then after that it was two first-weekend losses followed by losing in the opening round and now missing the tournament this year.

I don't get why we have to bring this up about who will be the best to replace Coach Cal? Cal has said and made it clear last time after the UCLA rumors is that he is at the best job in all of basketball and wants to retire at UK one day. I believe we all know Coach Cal and like he said this evening that he has really enjoyed this team. I can't see Coach Cal no matter what profession he might be in to retire early and especially how he has talked the last 3-4 years how he has enjoyed these Kentucky teams. I could see him at UK another 8-10 years if everything is going well with him and the school. He is making over $8million plus what he makes in his own projects and I believe Head Coaches in NCAA can make another $2-3 million besides there Salary with the School. Coach Cal is up for another raise in 2021 so by then he will be the Top paying Head Coach in NCAA Basketball along with Duke's Coach K and if he retires Cal will be the Top paying NCAA Basketball Head Coach. I know many of our so called fans and Trolls on RR and other UK websites have complained about last 4-5 years and not getting these Top 5-10 Recruits like Duke. I believe Coach Cal will be here another 8-10 years with Kentucky.

Last knee'jerk reaction like this was a guy with the initials BCG.

Don't think BCG ever went anywhere near an Elite 8 or ever recruited even at UK the likes of Smith and Culver.

Small sample size, agreed, but anyone who thinks Beard doesn't have a higher ceiling than BCG has an agenda.

Texas has a lot of HS ballers. Think I'd stay in that state if I was him. Culver was a 3 star from Lubbock. Think Cal would ever look at a 3 star? Maybe one from Kentucky. What was Dom?

Any time some team pulls off the upset, someone wants to put that coach as a successor. Geez.

Also, let's be cautious about jumping on the bandwagon of a coach at a Texas school who had a good couple years highlighted by a big tournament win. That's how we ended up with Billy G.
No, we ended up with Billy because of Mr Barnhart.

We're a players first program. When Cal leaves, I say we just let the players handle the coaching duties.

TT’s coach seems to be an up and comer but we need to see how these guys do over ten year periods with people leaving, recruiting, success over time. I do think he has the largest snoz outside Jim B that I have seen recently in the profession.

Why in the world would you bring up this BS the day before an elite 8 game? WTF.
