For all the talking heads like Jay Bilas always beating the drum how players don't get anything and should be paid. How much do you think the bill was to fly PJ to Wisconsin 2 times in the last 2 weeks to see a specialist? I know it's not as much money as the players bring in, but free education with tutors available, free food, free clothing, and the very best free healthcare is not nothing!!

Hey, when payday comes next Friday and your boss doesn't give you your paycheck but instead gives you a $10 Starbucks card will you be happy? Hell, it's "not nothing".

My job gives me benefits that a lot of other workers don't get (tsp, money for school/ housing, healthcare , 2.5 days/ month vacation, etc)don't make it ok not to Pay me.

When I was16 I worked at McDonald's, they gave me free lunch, guess what they still gave me a freaking paycheck. Your rebuttal is stupid, Pay these kids.

All that stuff you listed is chump change compared to getting 50% of:

Team Nike deal
The March madness deal (10.8 BILLION)
Ticket sales

Since you like comparisons, what's the dollar value of their annual benefits compared to a first round draft pick contract? About to the same as a gift card to a salary I would imagine.

They don't suddenly gain massive skills/experience the moment they leave college. They always had it, under the thumb of the NCAA.

Based on what I read in this thread, I suggest that those who want to should work at McDonalds for a free lunch and a paycheck until they are eligible for the draft..... (or take a free education just in case they are in the 98% that don't get drafted.) Maybe the G League and the end on the current rule is the cure for all ills. You know that Zion would have been a star in Europe this year, but how many $s did he build his brand by playing at Duke?

P.S. Does the Euros pay more than Duke? Nike? Adidas?

They know what they are signing up for going in? If you know you aren't going to get paid then go to one of the many other leagues around the world. Pay for your education like so many others do. Nobody is forcing anyone to go to college(well unless your Aunt Becky's kids)

I get your premise, but Just because you know what the CURRENT situation/ chances are dosen't make it right.

Yes yes yes, the old "you don't like it, then leave the country" argument vs. Staying in my country and making the situation better argument.

NCAA basketball has outgrown the "scholarship" value. Pay these kids their fair share and they can Pay their own scholarship/ healthcare, etc "just like everyone else". While making a living doing what they love. Everybody can win.

I’m unsure about the stipend. Scholarship athletes get room and board, travel and healthcare paid for. How much is use of the best facilities and personal instruction from world class coaches worth?
What is the value of 20 hours/week training from a 8 million dollar a year coach and his staff? Can you put a price on the exposure that is built in with a place like UK? This is not just resident training for professional sport but exposure to the world.
Zion went from a minor internet celeb known to weirdos like us that follow these kids in High School to a mega-superstar media sensation immediately because of college basketball.
Unfortunately, I do feel that many of these players do get paid. It is naive to believe that Zion did not get benefitted by Duke. A stipend for ZW is like giving Bill Gates lunch money. If this mess could get cleaned up, I would be for giving these kids some sort of payment

That's because you are an employee and working. They are going to school by their choice. Yes their choice. Just because they can't go straight to the NBA doesn't mean they can't play for pay somewhere else. They get plenty going to college. As the other poster said they also get plenty extra that we don't know about. They ARE NOT WORKING. They are going to SCHOOL. That's the difference!!

They ARE working. Playing basketball is their job while being in school. If they stop playing, they don't go to school anymore. Their job has a lot of extra perks that a lot of others don't get. Playing basketball at a high level in exchange for an education, and other perks is still a job.

They are students that by their own choice choose to go to college to play sports to audition their craft for future earnings. They are not employees. Players get hurt all the time and quit playing sports but continue to go to school on scholarship.

I am working BY CHOICE, nobody is forcing me to go out and work neither. I'd venture to say those kids spend more time on basketball related "work" than they spend attending "school classes". Hell I bet they spend more time on sports than they would a part time job.

There's plenty of money in NCAA sports, the sham of these kids still not getting paid in 2019 is sad. PJ Washington loves UK, no reason he can't/ shouldn't Get paid 6-7 figures playing here.

That’s a stretch.

It may be “like a job” with the time commitment. But it isn’t their job. It’s an extracurricular activity at an educational establishment that they are hoping to use the platform to make it to the professional side of the sport and it be their actual job.

Just like it isn’t their job in high school despite tickets being sold, games on espn, MCD AA viewing revenue etc.

Players should be able to sell their name and market theirselves in HS or College if an agent/shoe company/etc wants to take that risk before they are a pro. But the NCAA shouldn’t be responsible for paying individuals and the revenue should be distributed back into the member institutions and used for research, educational facilities, and other things that benefits the “Student” as well as off setting all the travel cost and scholarships.

I'm nearly doing that exact same thing right now.
I was recruited out of college by a corporation.
I learned to improve the skills I had acquired in college at the next level. Now I work to get even better so I can eventually show off my more refined skill level to another employer who will pay me more and give me better benefits.

I don't think schools should pay them, but I think it is wrong for the NCAA to not allow them to earn all the money they can from their likeness while they are there. There's no way all the schools could afford to pay all their athletes.

Here's where things are tricky. " "pay ALL their athletes". No not all athletes. If your sport does not generate money u shouldn't get paid. Each sport has contracts ie TNT signed a 14 year 10.8 BILLION dollar contract for rights to march madness broadcast. Every basketball player should get 50% of that. Every sec player should get 50% of the sec deal, every player should get cut of regular season home ticket sales, jerseys, etc.

According to the NBA these players aren't in the NBA right now because they aren't qualified for the job. Which brings us back to college basketball. They are studying their craft like everyone else prepping for a real job. That's what college is all about.
You can make millions while studying your craft.. ask Zuckerberg, countless software geeks at the MIT's, Harvard, etc of the world. If you geneerate money you deserve fair Pay.

What are they getting that is fair vs what they are generating? After your list we'll do the math. I'll remind you the MM/TNT deal is 10.8 billion alone.

So the 9th guy on the Abilene Christian bench deserves a cut? Same as PJ? Who decides who gets what? How do you make it equitable? PJ has generated more revenue than that kid 1000x over but who ultimately decides who and why someone gets more than another?

Appreciate your opportunity and move on. If you’re good enough to earn a professional NBA contract the go forth and earn, if you’re not then appreciate your free 4 year college degree and it’s trappings and the open door to the next phase of your professional life.
