Inez won back in the '40's, as I recall. My great uncle was an All-15th Region selection a couple of times for Prestonsburg and he said they could never get past Inez. Paintsville won in 1993 but other than that I don't remember hearing anything about another 15th Region team winning state. Both Wayland and Wheelwright finished third and I think that was in 1956 and 1961, respectively.

Mayfield and Walton-Verona are the only true small schools left in this tourney, both are at around or under 500 students in grades 9-12. John Hardin and Knox Central both played in that new 2A state tournament, but i would say both of them are between 900-1000 in the same grades.
Kentucky needs to never change the 1 Championship system. When you get the schools like Elliott County, Pendleton County, Clay County, etc. fighting and making it to the Sweet 16, it's a HUGE deal for the entire community. It's more than winning it all. It's the battle to get to RUPP.
Walton-Verona has a very good skinny big, Miles, who is headed to Xavier. He can make 3s. Played on Dontaie Allen's AAU team.
But how do you seed them, most of these teams don't play common opponents etc. What if you get a decent team from a weak region with a really good record, they would be seeded higher than a team coming from a tougher region???
How about my MNHHS Maroons ? Winners of 22 straight. They have 2 Jr's on the team, and a nice Sophomore, with nice SR. leadership. They will be stacked again next year. Ksaun Casey and Kenny White are legit.

Yeah I guess it is better that they just randomly draw the matches for those reasons. I always thought they should just seed the teams based upon their records but those aren't always indicative of how good or bad a team really is.
Unless they could come up with some rating system, just not sure how you do that. There used to be some rating system back in the 70's but it was not that accurate. It had a team we beat 3 times rated ahead of us going into regionals. We beat them twice in the season and for the district championship. I think they only seed districts, or atleast in my area most districts are seed because every team plays each other. But I think the regional is a blind draw as well.
Is he really 6'10? I was looking forward to watching WV play against South Oldham, but South messed that up by losing to Spencer Co. It looks like his only offers were X and NKU - he could rise above that and be one we regret losing out on, but he'll have to blossom in a big way......
Pulaski was split when Southwestern, where I went, opened in 93 and the schools both benefited from it actually. Having said that, if they were still together they would be a powerhouse. Plus Somerset is usually good at football.
If he’s not, he’s close. Playing against some midgets here but you can see he’s plenty tall.
I heard a Rumor that Perry Central magically got 3 new players at the end of the season and they just happen to be the 3 best players on the team. The lord works in mysterious ways.

Not true about UHA bringing in outside kids! They did back in the 90s when Tommy Wade was an assistant but KHSAA put a stop to that. May occasionally have a kid from Trigg County.
Union County '07. People forget about wrestling. They only have one class as well for the KHSAA state tournament. Most other states have multiple classes.
Scott county has built a new school called Great Crossing HS which will open next fall. Currently Scott County is the largest HS in KY
I saw that. Looked like you guys were undefeated in the Region and they were under .500? Pretty crazy. I'm fellow 16th Region alumnus as well (went to Russell way back in the day; we aren't very good).

Is Elliot County a consolidation of Sandy Hook and a couple other schools? We used to play Sandy Hook every season when I was in HS back in the '70's and they were always scrappy. Not the most talented but they did play hard.
No. They were Sandy Hook and changed it to Elliot Co. sometime after I graduated in 1969. Where did you go to school?

I went to Prestonsburg and graduated in 1974. I was wondering what schools would have consolidated to form Elliot County but you answered my questions. Thanks
Russell was good in the 60's. Had a really tall center. For years it was a given that Ashland would be going to the state.
I do know that Carter County consolidated into East & West Carter. Used to be Grayson & Olive Hill.

Yep, I remember that Ashland Blazer always had good teams. As I recall, they were Number 1 in the state for a while in 1973 and we played them at Prestonsburg that season.

There's been so many consolidations in Eastern Kentucky I've lost track.
