We dominated the game vs VMI. They hit 19 freaking 3 pts. That's almost 1 every 2 minutes. That's 57 pts on 3s alone. U show me a box score where a team hits 19 3s in a game, and at one pt is down 19 pts. Think about that for a second. If they hit even 10 of em as opposed to 19., that's 27 less pts , UK cruises by 30 plus. To say we played like chit is unreal. We dominated every aspect of the game (obviously except 3 pt shooting). When guys are hitting 30 foot 3 pointers,,, its hats off and on to the next play ...

Agree whole heartedly. If we got the "L" another story. We pulled it out where last year we would of folded. Not a great game but growth and a win nonetheless.

3 or 4 of the 3's were tip your cap types the rest were easy peasy wide open looks. Our defense is non existent at this point. We were beat off the dribble at will and gave up open look after open look. If you think that was a game where we were up in their guts and they just hit miracle shots I don't know what to tell you other than you don't know what you were watching.

Yes our defense is shotty. Should improve. However,, I dont care if half the looks were open, 3 quarters, whatever.... when u hit 19 3s your not supposed to lose. Plain and simple. Find me a game where a team hit 19 3s and lost by 10 pts or more. Huge Rebounding margin, more free throws attempted by a landslide. .... tons of offensive rebounds.... those are 3 of the most important numbers to see how much better u are than your opponent.

stats can be manipulated to have them say anything you want them to. I can say adjusted defensive field goal percentage, turnovers, and field goal attempts are 3 of the most important numbers to see how much better you are than your opponent.

They start one guy over 6'5 we should destroy them on the glass, we should be taking it to the hole and getting fouled, we should been running the ball through Reid non stop the way he was playing. But none of those things have anything to do with the fact our defense is porous and the main reason for it is piss poor effort.

Reid finished with 22 points and would have had more opportunities had he not gotten poked in the eye. And they had 2 guys over 6’8 that logged serious minutes. Creammer 6’10 (23 mins) and Stephens 6’8 (17 mins). If you’re gonna *****, at least have your facts straight.

You would think by now after 10 years under Calipari, that this is nothing new struggling a little defensively in November.

And yet, there are 10 threads talking about the same thing...

Go back and just bump threads from a year ago, or even longer...bet they look the same...

again they start 1 guy over 6'5 and reid had 20 points with 12 minutes left in the 2nd half and remind me, did he get his eye poked before the last 12 minutes of the game or after? Oh that's right, before. So thanks for stopping by to be a jabroni but you should get your facts straight.

You hit the nail on the head, man.

Did these guys just start watching UK the past year or two? Do they have brain injuries that make them forget everything about previous seasons? Do they just have an Anti-Cal agenda? Stupid? Miserable about life in general?

It gets old, that's for sure.

It has been for the last three or four years. Rule of thumb if you get aggravated easily stay away from tip off till maybe two days after a game, you will add more years on you life. But I love this team and knowing we added to many new pieces just to come out from game one and dominate. Plus Travis is learning new system himself so I wish people would just give it time

The thing is, the guy that went off got into a rhythm because of our terrible defense. Yeah, toward the end he was hitting some crazy shots. But that in large part happens when a shooter gets into rhythm and all of a sudden the basket feels like the Atlantic Ocean. Bad defense led to that. We were up 6 with 2 minutes to go. So no we didn’t dominate the game.

Well, I think everyone who follows college basketball knew the only way VMI could make it close was to shoot threes, except maybe our coaching staff and players.

Why we continue to double inside and leave guys open from three is beyond mind boggling to me.

Don’t we want teams to try and score inside over our big guys? That’s a much tougher thing to do than letting guys shoot open threes.

Quit switching and quit doubling in the paint.

Players from these small school have been doing this for years. It's like they chuck it up toward the basket with the what have I got to lose mentality and it works.

I mean, how bad is your defense that another team makes 19 3's on you?

Half of those made threes were very well defended. Regardless, Ken Pomeroy and other basketball statisticians are of the opinion that a team’s 3-pt shooting percentage is almost entirely a function of its shooting ability, and has very little to do with its opponent’s 3-pt defense. Most teams couldn’t hit 19 3s in 38 tries during real game action if they were open for every shot.

VMI’s was an anomalous performance. Don’t make more of it than it was.

Maybe. VMI’s performance against us in a vacuum might seem anomalous. Unfortunately now we’ve been decimated by Duke, and had subpar performances against SIU and VMI.

I don’t think our performance against VMI was that bad. They just hit 19 3s in 38 attempts. You lose 99 out of 100 games where an opponent shoots like that. We won pretty convincingly in spite of it.

But that's not what happened. No defense is why that happened and yes somebody may have had a big game but that happens all the time vs UK. Just learn to play d because it's not going to get any easier.

The problem is that UK didn't really need to do anything to dominate all the facets you mentioned. UK has a different level of talent than VMI, so they should have a huge rebounding margin, get a ton of offensive rebounds, and have vastly more FT attempts.

They needed to actually do something to stop the rain of 3's, and they didn't. So it's hard to be particularly happy with the performance. UK will play plenty of teams where pure physical domination isn't going to happen, and it would be nice to feel like UK will be able to handle that.

Ok, the 3 pt defense is poor. That said, I didn’t get to watch the game live. Took one look at the shots chart and figured we got killed. For us to win by 10, lots of things had to go right.

Our defense had a ton to do with it. We've given up double digit threes in three out of four games. They were getting anything they wanted on offense.

We are young! Haha

Seriously, our backcourt is young. It will be next year, too. They will come together over these next few months but we are learning this team isn’t what we thought they were yet. I think everyone got into a mode where the Bahamas had us thinking we were way ahead of schedule and would dominate college basketball. 1) we found out that’s not true right now and 2) we are more pissed to learn that the team actually doing that is freaking Duke.

Did you even watch the game? At least HALF of those made 3s had a hand in the mans face with a guy falling out of bounds. It got SO ridiculous that we started doubling and trippling up to try and stop him which lead to other guys being wide open. The **** happens. It's not like we have 5 Gary Paytons out there, so yeah some of it was bad defense, but sometimes guys just get hot from deep which frees up other guys.

I did watch it. I felt like a lot of them were open shots. There were several where guys got off open shots and we ran and jumped out. But I thought our perimeter defense looked pretty bad.

When you say we don't have 5 Gary Paytons--you're basically saying we played bad defense but it's the personnel. I don't necessarily even disagree with that. But none the less, we could have played much better defense on them.

Right. Defenses have more control over forcing teams to take 2s than actual 3 point FG% defense.

That being said.......it's a hard sell to fans that just witnessed some dude going absolutely bonkers from 3 not even 24 hours ago.

Expectations need to be lowered. We don't have a consistent go-to-guy when points are needed. We don't move without the ball. We don't get open shots. Our defense is weak.

After the Bahamas, I thought this team was a lock for the Final Four. Right now, I'd be surprised if we make it past the sweet 16.

When i say we don't have 5 Gary Paytons I'm admitting that our defense isn't perfect. What I'm saying is that Bubba went 10-16 from 3. Of those 10, i'd say about 3 of them were wide open. But, because he was SO on fire, we ended up putting extra people on him to TRY and stop him, and that of course freed up other people. If 2 of your 5 are guarding 1, then you have 3 guys remaining to guard their 4. People get open, all because Bubba was lighting it up from 30 feet out fading away with a hand in his face. You can't defend that.

Maybe, and I'm just spit balling here, but maybe, just maybe the problem has nothing to do with the team but instead you overreacted to the summer games and instead of recognizing that you're making the same mistake with early season scores and play? I could be wrong, but I think we should leave open that possibility until we see further evidence.
