Could a player get a loan from an agent after they left school and still be on the list? If Bam and Noel took money after school, is it okay in the eyes of the NCAA?

The fact that it says bad loan seems to indicate it’s the same stuff as Marcus Camby. Pay this with expectations that they will sign with you and when Bam did not, it’s a “bad loan.”

My question is this

If we say Cal (or any coach, but since Cal is ours, I'm going to focus on him) isn't aware that these kids are getting shoe and agent money then that seems like an incredibly naive stance, but if you don't take that position, then the coaches were turning a blind eye to the baggage these kids potentially brought to your program.

As Coach K said , and I'm paraphrasing, thats just the nature of recruiting today.

Do you bring a Bam Adabeyo or Nerlens Noel into your program knowing its likely that the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee (just an example) he is driving was bought with under the table money - also knowing that if you don't go after him, Duke, UNC, and Kansas will?

Coaches don't keep their job losing out on recruits like that.

Middle class white people? What does that even mean?

I am white, middle class with a college degree. It just seems like many from my background have greater problems with kids needing expenbse money etc to be able to have opportunity to play in HS.

WE may lack compassion & understanding because we cannot relate.

The NCAA will do nothing to any of these schools unless they have evidence the school knew. Too many players, they will rule that nothing will be vacated as long as school did not know.

Johnson was already out of school when the loan happened. Nothing to see there
LOL. No one knows when the loans happened, just when they were recorded. And no one knows if there were many other loans, or what the context was. There are names on the list just above and below Elijah Johnson like Brendan Haywood and Jared Jeffries who played in early 2000s. Why would they still be paying those guys? It was likely a reference to earlier payments. And why give Elijah Johnson a loan after he had already not been drafted and signed a European contract? Nice try to dodge on Elijah, Jayhawk, but you fail.

You think the millions generated by the NCAA not being shared with players is still ok in 2018?

The system needs to change.

The money Jurich was making.

I see it like this

1. Either pay them like employees
2. Make them legitimate students who have to earn grades and maybe even offer something like this as a major.

The charade of pretending these guys are student athletes is a joke. Yeah, maybe in soccer, water polo and baseball but certainly not in basketball and football.

And I totally see your point. It's the correct one in a vacuum or a perfect world. It's what every program would do and we'd all take a major hit and then start back on an even playing field.

I just have no faith in that happening and I don't want us to be the stupid program who tries to do the right thing. But I bet Mitch Barnhart will.

In this situation, a big part of the problem with turning yourself in, is that you are turning yourself in to a corrupt governing body.

The Emperor has no clothes. Play that to your advantage.

Edit. Never mind. The date on the memo predates Bam at UK
I was wondering about the timing of these loans too.

You don't voluntarily vacate games when the schools right behind you on the wins list have cheated their butts off for years and vacated nothing.

Unfortunately, it's no longer about doing the "right" thing where the NCAA is concerned. It would be like confessing to the mob boss that you skimmed the take and getting yourself shot.

If all Knox received was a meal, and the school had no knowledge and was not involved in setting it up, then it is safe to assume that he would be able to pay it back to restore eligibility.

It’s different when a member of the school orchestrates an extra benefit and takes steps to hide it indicating they know it is a clear violation. That’s why the committee said that to UL. Much dirtier situation with Louisville as far as the school is concerned based on the information released thus far.
This should be emphasized.

It will be interesting to see how many current players on this list will play this weekend. If these documents pan out I look for Kentucky to have to forfeit all the games that BAM and Noel played. This is truly depressing. Knox may have to repay meals, but he may be shut down in the short term. At this point in the season Knox may be done here. Hope the BAM and Noel payments happened after the season is our only hope.. ..
HAHAHAHA . Man you gotta bring better troll game then that .

UK through and thought here. You obviously sound scared. The ones that get the most defensive are the ones that are usually the most nervous and try to implicate other programs to make themselves feel better. And call other UK fans trolls if they say anything against UK or take up for another program. Relax a little and let it all play out.

Elijah Johnson played 4 years at Kansas and he's on the list for 15k, so is Kansas going to vacate 4 years?
The loan to Elijah Johnson came 2 years after he graduated when he was a pro playing in Europe. Nothing to see on that front in terms of Kansas however Josh Jacksons mom is mentioned so who knows on that front

Under option 1 you would have to pay every student athlete in every sport due to title 9. Colleges have tried to argue that self supporting sports programs (read football and basketball) should be treated differently than other sports. Unfortunately, that argument has failed in court numerous times.

So do we need to sit Knox tomorrow? Will there be a lot of teams sitting players tomorrow just to make sure? Man that is a tough call!
I doubt anyone is sat for those things. I mean kids like Knox and Carter . If anything they just pay the meal back. Honestly I am relieved as there is nothing on that FBI thing that looks bad for UK or UK could of known about . Same with UNC or DUke . Also with so many schools with all this minor stuff I kinda doubt the NCAA can do much.

That’s why you don’t throw stones. I intentionally did not say anything about the banner because of this. Let’s not be naive to what the world of basketball is.

You don’t recruit top high school players and not come across this stuff.

If you can't see the difference in things orchestrated by the school and coaching staff and players being paid by a third party before they commit to any school, maybe sit this one out and save your lecture.

For those saying we shouldn’t stoop down to UNC’s level in a morality sense, I don’t agree. I don’t think it’s a moral issue to make the NCAA pry the wins from our program out of our cold dead hands. Numerous other programs have skated on by playing the hard *** card and I say we do it too.

History is on the line. While I’d rather vacate wins than go on probation, I don’t want to lay down and let the NCAA do whatever they want to us. Screw the NCAA, this should become more an indictment on their system rather than an attack on these kids.

What needs to happen for the NCAA to save face, is for them to make an announcement that they will investigate this on a large scale and establish a guideline for punishments That is fair and consistent across the board for all involved institutions. Because of how widespread, they should offer schools or the players involved the opportunity to pay restitution to charity in the amounts paid in order to not have games vacated from their schedule. Penalties should be as simple as that. Current named players should be pulled from competition. It will be hard to get the players to pay the restitution as many have moved on and may feel no obligation to. You may have a few that pony up out of loyalty their alma maters or coach if they feel so inclined, but not likely. Honestly the NCAA has done nothing to stop this and has allowed the corruption to manifest itself into this, so they need to take a lighter and consistent approach in terms of doling out punishments. Then the entire NCAA needs to revamp itself starting at the top after all is said and done. This should be one that everyone gets the same punishment, with only the amounts being different based on each institutions level of involvement.

like a meal is even on the NCAAs radar with this volume of information.

there is proof of thousands of dollars being paid to multiple players from different programs.

The meal investigation is going to amount to a letter telling the kid to send $40 to a steakhouse and quickly forgotten about.

I don't much care what other schools are guilty of. We need to own up and act like men instead of trying to do the very things many of us have thrown barbs at schools like Louisville and North Carolina for doing the past several years. That crap rings pretty hollow.
