Oh boy, that hire will not sit well with the red bird fans. They all think they should be in line to get a Brad Stevens or a Billy Donovan.
In reality they need to be happy with Padgett, Crean or Mack, because that's how bad their rep is now.

Who is Howard Fineman? I have never seen his name mentioned before in sports reporting. Is he in the Louisville market?

A named coach will wait and see if UL gets hammered and how hard. Hope they cannot get anyone to take that job.

Fineman is a UofL grad, worked for Newsweek (before it became National Enquirer like), used to be on Chris Matthews show years ago (maybe still is). A national political reporter, very occasionally comments in UofL sports.

Chris Mack has been the spoken name as next Louisville coach in and around Louisville for a while now. I think it's only because there's no one else to point to. Mack's wife is from Louisville, and apparently he's been let it known that of course he'd be interested. That was all prior to Katrina #hookersindorms and especially before the FBI stuff. Point is, when he said that, Louisville was a good job. Does that mean he'd take it now, before anyone knows the NCAA sanctions they face? Who knows. People say, well, you get around that by offering him a 7 year deal, instead of the typical 3 to 5 year deal a new coach might get. But money is also an issue at Louisville now, due to the various scandals athletics won't be getting the same slush money from the university as before, plus what they'll owe Pitino and Jurich, plus the clawback money the NCAA is going to take......

Why would any coach take that job until they find out what the sanctions are going to be? There might not even be a program to coach!!

Yeah, but why would Mack make that move? Money parhaps, but he's turned X into a pretty good job. Taking the UL job right now is a dangerous career move in my opinion.
If I'm not mistaken, his wife is from Louisville, or there is some familial connection there. I think it would be a great hire. I also think Padgett is doing a good job. He's earned a head coaching job somewhere.

Edit: @Mojocat - Just saw in your post about his wife.

Doesn't sit well with me. I think Mack is a good coach. I was hoping they would keep Padgett.

Don't know why that is funny because Padgett has done one hell of a job.

He has done well, but maintaining an experienced team with a senior point guard, assembled and coached up by a hall of famer, is a very different thing than recruiting and coaching up your own group of guys. It would be lunacy to give the job to Padgett long term. If they think they're going to be obliterated with sanctions they may let him be caretaker for a couple more years, but I don't even see that. They're a top ten program with great facilities and fan support. They go get somebody.

No way he takes the job unless they throw big money his way. The cards are about to suck really bad no matter if coach k, Phil Jackson, and red Auerbach are all on the coaching staff. The NCAA is going to take scholarships and wins and cripple them for several years to come. They will have to rebuild from the ground and it would have to be a young coach looking to take the chance. Mack can stay at cincy where he is loved and win more for the future. Only way this happens is if they throw big bucks around

I doubt he takes the UL job. He is a Cincy boy who played at Cincinnati St.X, Evansville and Xavier. He is currently in his dream job, but the lure of a big pay day maybe enough to get him to move down I-71, eventhough he would be taking over a true dumpster fire.

Most of what you said is true. I haven't talked to Chris for a couple years, But at one time he told me Louisville was his " dream job "

Padgett is not making many mistakes, but to say he is "accomplishing" anything is overvaluing what he's doing. He inherited a decent roster of familiar guys that he had a part of coaching since being at Louisville as an assistant.

He has proven NOTHING on the recruiting side of things. Padgett is a huge gamble for anyone given this fact.

I would be surprised if Mack leaves his Alma Mater to coach at Louisville.

If I was Padgett, I'd be trying to find another hc job right now. Because they will dump him the first chance they get at a name coach. And they're having a pretty good year. His stock may never be higher.

He should definitely be able to go get a mid major job after this season, and it IS the time for him to go after one.

Outside of top tier blue bloods, Mack is running one of the better and more stable basketball programs in the country. Xavier will increase his salary no doubt, so money really isn't the issue.

If he is interested in big pay days and leaving Xavier, he will be in line for bigger opportunities than UL. In a few more years Duke, UNC, and Syracuse could all open. Hell, Michigan State could open next week. Also, he could quietly be on some NBA radars as well.

Off topic. But am I only one who hates those kinda fans?

Yup. It's UK in basketball (men's and women's), football, baseball, t&f, softball, tennis, or anything. Then it is whoever is playing uavel, dook, uncheat or indiana (non of them rate upper case letters). Then I may root for an SEC school.
