BTW, why would you NOT take this kid past 20? Impact players past the lottery start to thin out fast. If I'm a contending team, I would absolutely take him. Talk about risk/reward.

It doesn't make sense that he wouldn't test the waters. Why not? The opportunity to be "the guy (relatively speaking) on next year's UK team could be much more worth the opportunity than taking a shot at a random second round pick. However, like all these decisions, looking at mock drafts probably isn't the best way to judge.

Let's be honest. If this was a player from UL, KU, Duke, etc....we would be ripping the program and coach.

I don't blame the kid for going through the process but if does end up leaving it would be ridiculous.

Yep. I am a HUGE Cal fan and defender, I have defended him for using the OAD system to his advantage and from all the hit pieces, rival fan trolls, etc. I defend him against some of our own fans who don't like the concept of players first because your focus as a coach should be trying to help your players become as successful as possible and achieving their dreams, which also helps you when it comes to bringing in other great players.

That being said, in order to take advantage of the "players first" system, the deal has got to be that you at least played one minute in an actual game for UK at some point. It just has to be. Maybe in a few months I'll look foolish for this statement, I certainly hope so, but it sure looks like Diallo misrepresented his intentions and Cal got played hard here.

I've climbed down from the ledge myself; first, because I think he's coming back. Rookie salaries are gonna be higher next year, and the draft class weaker. This is one of the most elite guard-heavy classes I've seen in my lifetime, and Diallo would have to compete directly with game-proven players. He'd be trading lottery potential next year for a top-20 pick - at best - this year. That's not wishful thinking, that's conservative, objective, pragmatic reality, and Cal will have explained this to him. If Diallo were as "gone" as some people say, he would have hired an agent. This smells a lot more exactly like what we took it for last year - a series of cunning choices to give Diallo a shot at a top-5 pick.

Secondly, even if he is gone, we should celebrate it. This is symbolic. This is proof that Cal's "player's first" approach is not the same as Coach K's or Bill Self's. Cal means it. Tons of players eat up scholarship dollars and limits without ever making meaningful contributions on the court. Cal has once again elevated himself above the competition in the quest to attract the top talent. His commitment to helping his players do what is best for them is absolute, totally unconditional. He doesn't even demand they play a single game to earn his support. This may pay dividends most of us fans will never recognize.

Diallo might not even get a NBA combine invite... which is where he'd have to play to really jump up the draft board. He would need to do well at the Combine because NBA scouts and GM's arent going to risk a 1st round pick where the only times they saw him at all was an individual work out.

Well, you told him, "you, sir, are an idiot" and he simply asked you for an explanation as to why you said that as there was no clue in your post for your remark. I simply stated that he had made a good point that no one has yet to answer (how could Cal turn down the #1 SG and what would you have done differently). What a "like" has to do with anything is pointless, not sure why you even brought that into the discussion unless it makes you jealous or angry because he didn't give one to you for calling him an idiot??? Not sure why I'm even answering you as just about every post you have put up here has been very negative.
Dude. Cut him some slack. His great grandpappy was honorable mention all 14th region. Or some such...

I'm asking you to back up a claim. If it's a negative, that should tell you something.
Now you think you're being clever. You aren't. I have no idea what options were available had we not taken Diallo. I am certain there were some. Are you saying there were no other options?

Nobody should be surprised by this. HOWEVER, this guy is on a basketball scholarship at the University of Kentucky. As such, he should've been integrated into the program for 3 weeks or so and then started to actually PLAY IN GAMES. That is part of the deal if a person is on BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY. IMO.

We have had kids here for 4 years that never played...

I viewed this as a greyshirt in football.

At this point.. playing this out that Diallo does leave.. I'm more mad at the kid, and as far as Cal as concerned, it was just a dumb move. I would be mad at him if he continues this none-and-done route... but no reason to assume he would.. because no matter what the defenders of this say, this does hurt us, and it wasted a lot of time.. If Diallo leaves, many people are going to be pissed and Cal is going to have to answer some questions.. I would bet this is the last time he does this..

Again, how is it a dumb move?

Kid said he was playing next year.

Our #1 recruit on our list.

The #1 SG wants to commit and enroll early, and it was a dumb move?

So if he comes back to play is it a brilliant move?

You cant have it both ways.

I swear I don't know how some of you guys function with such a profound lack of understanding simple concepts. This does NOT mean he won't be back. Why don't you wait until we know before you go out on that ledge? Jesus.

I know what it means. Reasonable chance I understand all of this more than you. I still think it's silly. Not a huge deal, just my opinion.

Just wanted to let you know you're important enough that this deserved its own thread. Thank you for not letting it get lost over there where the rest of us are discussing the issue.

Not worried about this at all as he will come back.
Interesting. You aren't reading the tea leaves very well. If he was just seeing where he stood, why wait til the last day? Why thank everyone for helping you? Why talk about how much your game has grown.

It is VERY unlikely he comes back.

How you put this on Cal is beyond me. It's not like we missed out on another superstar in this class because of it.

Because Cal recruited him, should have had an understanding that he would play at least one year, otherwise why take him? What did UK get out of this, nothing.. Honestly tho, I don't give a ****, this one and done **** is wearing thin.

Wrong IMO. Scouts say he will be a mid 2nd rounder if drafted at all. Really not worried about this in the least. It hurts nothing by getting feedback . I really think all our players should do including SKJ , Gabriel ect. but the freak out on this board would be hilarious. What does getting better evaluation like Briscoe did last year hurt? It doesn't.

Reading that memo it looks like a farewell. Guess all we can do is wish him well. My opinion if I'm a scout is that if the kid didn't have the confidence to play against college competition for fear of hurting his stock, why would I draft him for my NBA team?

Only a dumbass would think Cal looks bad for this.

EVERY team would have taken him.

It is absolutely STUPID to tell the #1 SG and your top guard recruit -

"No we won't accept your commitment and allow you to come early because you might enter the draft without ever playing a game"

Thats all fine and dandy, but you damn well better have a backup plan and Cal does NOT. If you think what we have coming in is going to make an immediate impact, which is sorely needed, then you think you know more than you do.

This team will be very, very average without him.

Luke Kennard will be past 20. Josh Hart. Sindarius Thornwell.

If you are picking past 20 and need a wing, there will be some proven commodities available.

Grayshirting is used to buy a 5th year since most players need that time to develop. Is it a brilliant move if Diallo comes back? No, it is luck. Most may not have answered your questions on this but I think I did, even if we disagree.

You need to look deeper. on the flip side if he was for sure gone then he would have no need to say things like not hiring an agent and testing the waters.... So what he's doing is covering all bases. He obviously wants to go but just like with Briscoe last year.... has to cover all the bases for a possible return also.

this freak out is pretty funny and what is funny is honestly every player who ever has an eye for NBA basketball should do this as it hurts nothing but fans across the country would lose their crap even though most of the guys who don't hire an agent right away end up coming back anyway.
