No issue whatsoever. Our players were fine. Let's not flake out over our kids not in lockstep with MSU...they were respectful and our kids were also. End of story.

I am, however, boycotting the NFL and am enjoying not having watched one second of it thanks to Colin and his ilk. Add that goof from our women's soccer team...not watching them either. Spoiled. Disrespectful. Morons.
lol

Yes yes. Hilary lost and you got butt hurt. This is the first election that a candidate ever lost, so far as you know, I suppose.

You have three choices. Go start a riot and break stuff belonging to innocent people to show your respect for the lies you've told. Leave the country, I suggest Mexico but you may find Canada more to your liking (preferred). Or, you could quit whining and support the flag and the country that affords you the ability to whine.

I don't give a crap about Hillary, in fact I can barely stomach her shady *** but she isn't a no nothing racist with severe self control issues.

Better the jail house than the nut house, is my call.

I cannot imagine how miserable many of you must be.

Not a single player was being disrespectful last night. They were standing there watching while the anthem was being performed like about 25,000 other people in attendance. No one was making an outward gesture of disrespect.

I hate discussions like this one, but every year it seems our fans have to demonstrate the way they actually view our players.

What? How we view our players? It has been a pretty civil discussion except for a couple of dumb posts like this and bluegrassking rant

I need no safe space and I said nothing about the military but rather a bunch of reactionaries talking garbage about patriotism that evidently hate about everyone in and everything about our nation other than imagery when convenient as they have the nerve to whine about "the war of northern aggression" while hollering patriotism.

Phony hypocrits.

Well, you do realize you've insulted half the US voting population, most of which voted against her instead of for the other guy. She insulted half the US voting population too.

I said they, not we. Most of "we" view our players like actual people chasing their dreams at the best place in the country to do that.

All of "they" see them as servants for their own pleasure that owe them something and whose individual freedoms, choices, opinions and personalities are unpleasant side effects that are to either be avoided or condemned.

Yelping dogs, etc.

I love this country. As a vet I was proud to see MSU players holding this hands over their hart. Noticed Bam did also. It is the times we live in. When I was growing up there was more national pride because we had just won World War 2. This is the greatest country in the world. God bless the USA.
We also said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in school too. Those were truly great days.

Let's not kid ourselves folks, it is disrespectful to all veterans and active duty personnel to not place your hand over your heart during the anthem. Buzz Williams actually made this a point of emphasis for one of his team's and it was awesome to see how he did it.

However, this is just something athletic culture doesn't seem to care about. I don't understand why athletes stopped doing it (and now they do things like sway, fold their arms, etc) but for most part, the culture of athletics has shifted away from that. But just because everyone does it doesn't make it right.

But again, it's not UK is some outlier here- it's the culture of athletics today and there's really nothing to be done. Plus they're free to express themselves how they want during the anthem and it's their choice how to do that.

Cant say I agree with this one , In the PRO's Yes , but currently these players represent the U of K and Kentucky in general . While I saw nothing overtly wrong with our guys during the anthem but whose squad looked more respectful of our nation's anthem ? They are not " FREE "to do what they choose -- Cal wants them to shape up during the anthem he simply says so . I noticed Cal did have his hand up . But this isnt a Ky hoops thing , its EVERYONE -- Respect the song , respect our country , our vets who died protecting it , and cover that heart . .

Who is stopping you from saying the pledge of allegiance now? Are you complaining because we don't always force people to pledge allegiance to this country now?

I know what your saying but the growing disrespect for the nation we live in is just getting ridiculous!!

You do realize disrespect for the nation has existed for a long time right? You do realize that social media and 24 hours news and sports channels with nothing better to talk about are bringing it to light and pushing it in your face so that you are more aware of it than you were in the 1960's. Do you not remember soldiers protesting the Vietnam war? People burning flags, etc. Protests against this country have always existed in one way shape or form.

Get out of your echo box on facebook and you might change your view of current events.

And how did you read my post as a complaint? When I was in school it was the proper thing to do. No one FORCED anyone to do it. We just did it. It is not practiced any more in schools.....then again neither is alot of things. You must not be old enough to remember how great our society used to be. Nothing wrong with that.

We stood up (vet here). That's good enough. Its what we do most games anyway.Just because Michigan State did it different didn't mean anything. We would have looked ridiculous running out there at the last minute to mock or even out what Michigan State did. They stood and got mentally ready."Ashamed" lol watch the NFL these are good kids meet them before you judge them.

Or I will stay right here in the Commonwealth where I was born and do and say as I please and you can try to stop me but don't expect me to be flinging tofu when you come.

Yes. Thousands have died, family's have been destroyed so that you can disrespect your country, whine about stuff you know nothing about, disrespect half the voting public and try to poke fun at those who have some bit of national pride.

You know, I understand that. I really do. I think what drives my utter contempt for folks like that is that they feel a sense of accomplishment. It serves my purpose best not to stop you. Better to let you incite a huge swath of America that has been ignored. You and others like you did a good job. They woke up. Now, speak up. Keep them awake.

I resepectfully disagree...

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/36/301

36 U.S. Code § 301 - National anthem
b) Conduct During Playing.—
During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1)when the flag is displayed—
(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart;

I stand corrected. Thanks for that. Good to know.

i think it looked worse than it was because all of MSU player were in a line with hands over their hearts, but my facebook feed blowing up with posts of U.K. Players not showing respect during the playing of the national anthem. Great win and not to take away but it did t look good for the school during the Anthem

Go find yourself a safe space if you're this easily triggered.

I remember when millions of our citizens were treated as though they were lesser or second class, but things didn't suck for me because I didn't belong to those groups, and we were taught to say a pledge about how equal we all are, even though it wasn't actually true.

God, those were the good ol' days. Shame we've let this country go to waste by trying to stand for the ideals we were founded on and making some people slightly less comfortable when they watch the news or sports.

I've always done it because that's how I grew up. I certainly did not know that there was a rule for it. And, I guarantee most Americans don't know, either.
While this isn't a non-issue, I also don't think it's to be considered utter disrespect, either. I notice most teams do this - they quietly and respectfully, which is what our team did. Do I wish our guys stood as the MSU guys did? Sure - but I'm also not going to trash them.

There is this overwhelming desire of some Americans to tell others how wrong and horrible they are.

A bunch of college kids didn't put their hands over their heart.
I'll say that I do, but I've been in football and basketball stadiums with thousands that have their hands down.
I've never once thought how unpatriotic or disrespectful that person is.

My observation at the game was that about 20 percent of the people around me placed their hand over the heart. Mostly older men.probably men who are vets including myself.was not bothered by the players but was somewhat surprised by the MSU lineup ?

First time I've ever been ashamed of UK teams.

Losses will not bother me a bit for basketball or soccer teams.

The basketball team didn't do anything wrong, man.

Damn, y'all. It's symbolism. Chill the hell out. Nobody was hurt.

If ANY of you bitching about this trivial **** didn't stand in your GD living rooms when the song was played, you're hypocrites. My feet were firmly on the coffee table and my face was in my phone. Deport me.

We've all been to games where the announcer asks you to please direct your attention to the flag.

If it were that big of a deal, the protocol would be to ask people to cover their hearts with their hand.

Clearly it hasn't been a big cultural issue for a very long time.

I didn't see it....but it's generally respectful to either have one hand over heart or both hands behind back...both of which signify respect so non-issue
I was at the game, I had a beer in one hand and the other at my side. I also yelled in enthusiasm at the end because the girl who sang it had an absolutely beautiful rendition. Sorry if my hand positioning was disrespectful.

Exactly my point. After a couple of hours in Arlington, I don't have the urge to show respect by standing during the anthem so much as to hit my knees and thank God for the flag and United States. All those white markers are the saddest proudest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Agree. One of the best posts I've seen on here.
