Any interest in another GM Draft thread this summer?

My proposal would be to draft a team of 12 current players and 1 coach. Each person would have a 6-12 hour window to make a selection.

If we pick a coach, I'll take Cal. He's dying to get back in the league.

Where has our leader gone off to?

The reason I like doing the "for the next five years" part is that it keeps it from simply being a competition between the top 2-3 picks by opening up the amount of strategy involved.

We need that bit of subjectivity or else no one besides the people with LeBron and Curry have a shot unless they mess up their draft. Having to weigh the present and future keeps things open.

I like the idea of 12 rounds, seems to let you have backups at each spot plus a couple versatile guys and fliers. I'm open to picking coaches if you guys want to try it. We used franchises once, and you got all of the things that went along with that franchise, like big budget, great coach, excellent training staff, big time free agent market, etc. but I think that was convoluted and didn't work very well.

I'll be traveling for 2 days next week, so may miss following the thread closely for those days. Gonzo could you message me your email? That way I can give you a list of 5-6 guys when it's close to my pick and you draft the guy on top of my list. It'd help move it along quicker for you all on those days should I be on the clock at any point.

I don't mind that, although I'd rather we wait until the draft order is set to decide. If I'm near you, I'd rather someone else do that so there's no possibility of taking one of your players.

When/how are we setting up the draft order?

I randomized it last year. I can use the same website again or someone else can do it. I figure we'll give it a day or so to let everyone check in here and then we'll get started once the rules are set.

It seems we all agree on the 12 man roster. I think limiting players would be hard because if you mark off the top 5 players in the nba(Lebron, curry, KD, Russ, Kawhi) you've still got AD, Cp3, Harden, Cousins out there.

I thought the coach thing would be interesting since most of us seem to follow the NBA rather closely.

I think we should be voted on based on next 5 years so the person with Lebron/KD doesn't automatically win.

What would be fun but maybe not doable this year would be to set a salary cap with current salaries and draft a team that way.

I would love to do that but I have a feeling it would get to complicated.

Like, wait 7 hours for someone to pick. Realize he exceeded the cap. Tag him in a post. Wait 6 more hours for him to pick again.

Agree. I do think it would be a lot of fun, but way more complicated.

That's fair. I didn't even think of that. Very good idea. And it may be an issue at all. My pick may not come up those days but if it does I don't want to hold everyone up.

I would love to try to add salary cap considerations, but like others have said it may be too tough. It definitely makes the next 5 years thing much different. If one team has a lot of expiring/cheap deals it has a huge effect on how they move forward. I won't give examples, but one player on a 3yr $7million/yr contract is more valuable than an equally talented player at 4yrs $13million/yr. If someone could think of way that'd be reasonable, I'm all for it. It just may be too complicated for us to do.

Last year we built a team to compete for 5 years, but I'm not sure how well that translates when it comes to voting.

One suggestion would be to construct the best team to compete next season, and remove some of the guesswork.

We might limit the number of recent all stars any one person can draft, to add some challenge.

5 years seems like too long, but a 3 year window might be a nice compromise. IIRC, ESPN had an article about free agents and ranked them by performance over the next 3 years, so there's at least some stuff projecting that far out available for people to peruse. Not that most will, but at least it's an option.

My only concern with a 3-year window is it doesn't give you much room for growth for young guys. Over the next 3 years who is more valuable Karl Towns or Steven Adams? It might be Adams, but Towns is infinitely more talented. It also gives the Lebron or Steph Curry team an even greater advantage.

All the years count in a 5 year window. So if you want to base your draft strategy on the next 3 years you can still do that, and reference the ESPN article for why your team makes more sense.

What's left to iron out?

3 or 5 year window?
Coach or no coach?
6 hour clock on weekdays, 12 hours on Sat/Sun. Clock stops from midnight to 8 a.m.

If you miss your draft window then you get skipped. The next GM can draft, so on and so forth. If the draft comes back around to you and you still have not come back to select a player then you do not get a new clock to draft (you get skipped again) and we will look to possibly replace you.

Only current NBA players/draft picks are eligible.

No discussing undrafted players until after the final round.

More than 1 Duke player on your roster earns you universal scorn.

Any other rules?

I like all of those. Seems the only thing we are hung up on is the 3 or 5 year window on which our teams are judged.

I vote for a 3 year window and that we draft a head coach. Can be a current or unemployed NBA coach.

I prefer 5 years. Nothing prohibits a GM from focusing on more immediate needs or a time period less than 5 years. It allows for varying draft strategies and more discussion when comparing teams.

Coaches are fine. Are they drafted? Do they have to have coached within the last season, 2 seasons, 3 seasons? Or do we each get to pick a coach and the same coach can be selected by other teams?

I figured we'd have 13 draft selections and you'd use one on a coach. Each team would have a different coach. I'd say they'd have to had coached in the past 2 years would be my suggestion.

I'm perfectly fine with a 5 year window. Prefer 3 but am content with 5, no fuss from me.

Agreed on the rules Gossie mentioned. That's how we've done it the last couple years.

I'm fine with 13 rounds and one being a coach.

Let's say they had to be on an NBA roster in the last three years?

Let's do a 5 year window and if someone wants to draft to win now or the next three years, that's fine too. Just include it in your team argument.

Since it's a holiday weekend, I'll post the draft order here sometime on, say, Sunday, and then we'll start on Tuesday morning at 8:00am central?

Sorry to be so late guys. Below are the numbers/order in which the owners were listed earlier in this thread. I put those numbers in a random generator, with that number assigned to the owner beside it, and the order it returned is your draft slot.

In short, your draft slot is listed in parentheses.

1. Ukcats1988 (9)
2. Gonzocat90 (5)
3. Bigc4515 (10)
4. Catsfan2523 (12)

6. Aike (11)
7. Eastlansingcat (3)
8. Gossie21 (8)
9. Jbholmesfan (7)
10. Cats192 (6)
11. Rupp'sRunt (1)

With the 1st pick, rupp'srunt chooses Lebron James , with the second pick, coolcat9lives chooses Steph Curry. Now that we have that out of the way......

Hahaha. Don't be so sure. I'm not totally convinced with Steph's superstar ability. My staff is eyeing these guys for the second pick as well:

I'm glad you can only pick one of the 4. At least 2 will still be available in the 4th slot for me. You must be a big market club, rubbing your staff in all our faces.

***After reading that again I'm not sure that was what I meant to say.

I had the same reaction. If you're not first or second, it's almost better to be last so you pick again sooner.
I always hate getting last pick. It's good that you get 2 straight picks but then you have to wait 24 picks for your next turn

So far, everyone is unhappy. I'm doing an amazing job of being a commissioner and the draft order is definitely fair. Asking for a raise in the next CBA.
I don't blame you. The ping pong balls were against me.

I've got a strategy in mind I just hope I can get some players to slide to me. And either way it's a fun way to pass the next few weeks.
