not legend, just a fact. Cliff Hagan guided by chauvinism and a general disdain for the women's game turned her down.
Part of that is correct. Women's college basketball wasn't much thought of at that time and was still not a "sanctioned" college sport. Title IX wasn't in effect then. Pat was willing to take the UK job, in part, because girls basketball in Tn didn't start playing full court until 1981 and even then some schools rebelled against it, but UK declined to pay her moving expenses. She started as a graduate assistant and took the head job the next year after the Tn Women's coach quit. According to her book, she said she made $250 per week, washed the teams uniforms and drove the team van to away games.
It wasn't just Cliff Hagan that wasn't enamored with women's basketball, the NCAA was publically very much against Title IX.
Pat is a legend in women's basketball and deservedly so. She was also the first women's coach to win "Coach of the Year".
She was very influential in many people's lives and it's sad that she could be in her last days and not get to enjoy her retirement.
