So sad to hear about her failing condition. I know she has had such a tremendous influence on many others over the years. I have a personal friend who claims she owes all her own accomplishments to Pat Summitt for the great confidence she has given her to achieve in life. Prayers go out to the family.

God Bless her and the family! It's very sad to see how this disease takes it's toll on such a great person who did so much for the lives of other's and the game of women's basketball. Ended her storied career way to soon and hate to hear it's getting to the point of being life threatening. My grandmother suffers from dementia and it's mind blowing how fast it sets in. Go from one day being a normal functioning human being and in a matter of months, it feels as if my Grandma is no longer with us do to her current state that dementia has caused.

A pretty cool story about Coach Summitt.

Years ago, a good friend of mine took his daughter to one of Summitt's camps.

A couple of her players were more or less just goofing off and not putting much if any effort into counseling the kids.

Summitt pulls both of them to the side and has a very intense and one sided conversation with them.

My buddy said both of the players were wide eyed and trembling after that, LOL. He said you never saw more dedicated and hard working camp counselors in your life than those after Summitt ripped them a new one.

Summitt demanded the best no matter what. One of the all time greats.

Hate this for her and her family.

Is this actually true? I had heard it was and then I heard it was an urban legend.

not legend, just a fact. Cliff Hagan guided by chauvinism and a general disdain for the women's game turned her down.

Pat Summitt's family has acknowledged that the legendary coach's health has declined in recent days and has asked for prayers amid a "difficult" time.

In a statement released Sunday morning, the family said that the former Tennessee women's basketball coach's early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type, has progressed over the past few days.

"She is surrounded by those who mean the most to her and during this time, we ask for prayers for Pat and her family and friends, as well as your utmost respect and privacy," said the family's statement, which was released by spokesperson Erin Freeman.

The Knoxville News Sentinel, citing a source, reported early Sunday morning that Summitt is "struggling" and that her family is "preparing for the worst."

hate to hear this; whether you like women's basketball or not, there is no doubt how much she did for the sport, and the players she coached.
Thoughts and prayers for her, her friends and family

Part of that is correct. Women's college basketball wasn't much thought of at that time and was still not a "sanctioned" college sport. Title IX wasn't in effect then. Pat was willing to take the UK job, in part, because girls basketball in Tn didn't start playing full court until 1981 and even then some schools rebelled against it, but UK declined to pay her moving expenses. She started as a graduate assistant and took the head job the next year after the Tn Women's coach quit. According to her book, she said she made $250 per week, washed the teams uniforms and drove the team van to away games.

It wasn't just Cliff Hagan that wasn't enamored with women's basketball, the NCAA was publically very much against Title IX.

Pat is a legend in women's basketball and deservedly so. She was also the first women's coach to win "Coach of the Year".

She was very influential in many people's lives and it's sad that she could be in her last days and not get to enjoy her retirement.
