I would be fine if Cal just made Willis do a lot of community service, during the summer, around Lexington. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't seem to remember hearing Willis getting into any type of trouble the past 3 years. So I don't think he needs a suspension. A guy at work said maybe suspend him from Midnight Madness, and just practice in the Craft during it (I believe that is what happened to one of our women's players). I thought that would be harsh for a senior, but it would send a message.

As long as he keeps his nose clean between now and the start of the season, I don't see the need for a suspension.

[laughing] The thing is, Cal's players do the community service ANYWAY. I trust Cal, Derek will get what's coming to him as Cal see's fit. Ole Coach has broad shoulders. Go CATS!

Wouldn't surprise me to see him suspended the first 10 games or so. I think it's worse than just getting busted at a party in Lexington or something. Shows some pretty poor judgement. Also wouldn't surprise me if it's handled internally and doesn't miss any games. We'll see.

It's not dui, but it could have been very easily. Plus, he's underage. The program needs to take this seriously. Derek needs to apologize to BBN and accept his discipline.

Make Jared Prickett his live in accountabili-buddy and film it for a reality tv show. At worst, Derek learns how to hit the sauce but maintain playing time. At best, Bravo has a new prime time Tuesday night show.

From a coaching standpoint you want to get a message sent. Cal also personally knows DW and cares about his well being. He was (more than likely?) drinking and driving. Fewer things should be taken more seriously by a head coach in high school and college.

If he admits to me he was drinking and driving, I'd suspend him, no questions asked. How long? Depends on the severity.

You cannot just ignore drinking and driving if you care about your kids. In coaching you grow attached to these guys like they're your own. I get the "let's not jump to conclusions", always side with the players posters ( or younger people) posters. You're always cool.

But if he was drunk and driving around he needs a heavy price.

If not, stop being dumb and stay inside under 21 drinking. You do play at UK.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and got caught smoking. Dad made me smoke a whole pack to prove a point.

Thought it work again, so I told him a drank a beer. All he did was put a lock on his cooler.

My dad caught me smoking when I was 15 ('00) and gave me a lick with the belt for every cigarette in the pack. Raysed old skool son.........

Still smoked until I turned 27.

Maybe suspend him for the first exhibition game, Michigan State is too important to suspend for just passing out drunk. This isn't a DUI, let's not go crazy.

As a fan, I understand the incentive to sugarcoat and minimize this. But, if reports are correct, this was NOT your typical every day case of college kid passes out drunk. Instead, he apparently was passed out drunk on the street right next to the open driver side door of his car. Which suggests not only that he'd been driving drunk, but driving when he was SO drunk he couldn't even maintain consciousness.

He's extremely lucky that he's not facing more serious charges.

community service and some running. Of course if a drunken stupor occurs again even if he's only caught by cal or a staff member... then something more severe.

Drunk and passed out in the street next to his open car door. Yep no big deal, sure it's the first drink he has ever had ever and since it might affect the team then of course no big deal. Hope you wouldn't say that if you're underage kid was caught in that same situation

So the kid got drunk. Who gives a ****?

You are assuming he drove. He may just as likely been coming from a nearby house and passed out as he opened the door.

Or he heard a commotion outside and went to help an old lady across the street. When he got there, she hit him over the head with her purse, knocking him out. As he fell, he grabbed the car door, causing it to open. While he unconscious, the old lady poured her church wine down his throat. Then the cops showed up and mistakenly arrested him for being drunk. The alcohol then took affect and BAM he is drunk.

Best post of the day right here.

Those damn cops should be looking for that mean old lady (bet she was a UL fan) instead of picking on our UK basketball heroes.

LOL! Here we go. So much concern about winning the opener that what is best for the program and the player are overlooked. Willis will draw a punishment that should include a suspension. Calipari is responsible for far more than 1 basketball game, and he is far too smart to underplay this and send the wrong signal.

You know Cal is going to grill Willis and get to the bottom of what happened, whether we know the details or not.

I think the punishment will fluctuate based on what he's told and how forthright he is with the truth. IMO, Cal has
always been a fair when dealing with his players, but in a case like this, I'm certain he will be firm and dole out
the appropriate discipline.

Since a vehicle is undoubtedly involved here, my guess would be a suspension between 5 games and a semester.

I agree. I have no idea how long the suspension will be. That is up to Coach Calipari. But there has to be a suspension. It is incredible to see some people acting like this is nothing. Willis is old enough to graduate from college, get married, have a job, have a family. He could have gotten himself or someone else killed. If Bam was there, then Willis was contributing to his delinquency. Maybe he was just blowing off some steam, but his judgment in the matter was flawed enough to hurt or kill someone. And maybe he has a drinking problem. After a stunt like this, that's the 1st thing that must be considered. Calipari is a good man. He won't blow this off.

Dang Cat...

IMO, if Willis is upfront and truthful, then the punishment will be less - but if he's less than genuine,
Cal will know it and he'll have no other option than to hammer him. He will always place the best interest
and welfare of his kids ahead of the program.

If Willis is suspended then Cal has officially surpassed Coach K in ethics and doing the right thing.

Willis would never be suspended at Duke for this. Jesus they don't even suspend players who try and injury the other team and cheat.
