He graduated from West Point and served in the Army, so he is not a soft coward.

I'm not overly fond of Coach K, but graduating from a military academy, let alone getting through the freshmen year, is not something a soft coward is capable of.
Funny. While he was in the Army he was a recreation specialist directing service teams. This was what he did while the Vietnam conflict was raging on during the deadliest years 66,67,68,69. He never left the states.

Fear not, I think I've found a more interesting place to post. Not as crazy. Might still stop around here once in a while, but... Yeah.

Let's give K a little credit for evolving. He longer dog cusses players for leaving early to provide for their family.

Thank God they didn't send him to Vietnam... I don't think I could have stomached all our troops flopping to the ground and surrendering.

Sore loser, cant shake hands, lies about opposing players to media, fakes injury when his team sucks, copys everything UK, Yeah he SOFT.
I don't think soft means what you think it means.

He's definitely made sacrifices to his integrity, but you clearly don't know much about the military academies or military service.

He's a sore loser and he lied. He also teaches players to flop and allows his players to play dirty but doesn't like it when others do it- lack

Graduated from University of Maryland.

My friend, you don't want to go there. I'm retired. Served from 1971 until 1996 and then spent 9 years as contract employee. 34 years....is that good enough for you.

I earned my promotion to officer ranks from dedication and service. I knew way to many graduates of "military academies " who could not wait for their active duty to be done with and during their time in the ranks they were too book smart and could never grasp what their actual responsibilities were.

Plus, during that time period (middle sixties) so many officers right out of the academy went right to combat zones and were not good leaders. The ones that never left the states had connections to keep them home similar to those who got deferments to avoid service.

That doesn't mean he is of quality character, and poor character can make for a soft persona. Not in the pansy way, but in the cheat to get ahead way. He isn't a true West Point man, and does NOT exemplify the core values of the Army or West Point.

Folks...

Duke is not ripping off UK or Cal...

It's amazing to me the number of people who seem to think Cal came up with the idea to recruit the very best NBA caliber talents...nor did he come up with the idea to let freshmen run the show...

K has been doing it since the late 80s early 90s...it just has been more common up until recently that players would stick around for a few years...

Do folks not remember the number of NBA ballers K has gone through?

Cal "tweaked" the process by expediting it...

With K it was "you will go pro after a few years here..." ...and he would have 1 OAD sprinkled in here and there...

and with Cal its "don't even think about coming back after a year...two tops..."...every now and then a WCS will stick around...

K has the first round and lottery numbers...his ballers have made half a billion dollars...it's just that most of them until recently have stayed around...

The only reason you have more years of service to this country than I do is because you're older. Don't take that the wrong way though, I greatly appreciate your service to our country.

I come from a family of military service. Both of my grandfathers served in combat roles, one on WWll and the other in the Vietnam War. 2 of my uncles enlisted when they were 18. One only served 5 years, the other served for 33 and retired as a full bird colonel with multiple deployments to the Middle East. He is currently contracted as head of security for a Lockheed Martin facility in Texas and has been there for over 5 years. His son, my cousin, just graduated pilot training with the Air Force and he has no plans of early retirement.

I myself went to the Air Force Academy straight out of HS for a year and half. I was told my eyes weren't good enough to fly (my biggest dream growing up was to fly fighter jets, specifically the F-22, Lance Sijan is also a hero of mine), so I left, finished college (for mom) and went to my second dream- firefighting. I'm still training (paramedic one because we're a joint EMS provider as well) but I ultimately plan to be a smoke jumper out west.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with some "ring knockers" but the military academies produce high quality officers (not saying coach K was one), which is why a majority of our military's leadership graduated from an academy.

I completely agree. I don't think Coach K is a man of the utmost character at all. I just don't think someone being "soft" or "hard" (no pun intended) has anything to do with character.

Yep - and it actually started back in the late '90's. After Duke won back to back championships in '91-92, the bottom kind of fell out for Duke. The two years thereafter were the worst is K's tenure. I think '94 was the year that was so bad, K had it removed from his record and given to an assistant coach. [laughing]

At about that same time, Pitino and Kentucky were starting to dominate college basketball with high-flying, NBA caliber athletes.

When Duke recruited Maggette, it represented a radical departure from their typical recruiting. Maggette had baggage, he was an elite athlete who was very obviously going to leave early for the NBA. Duke had never had a player leave early for the NBA before Maggette. He also wasn't a particularly strong or committed student.

K changed because he knew he had to change or be left behind, and he changed because of Kentucky's success.

The Maggette recruitment by the way is why the fact the Duke skated on this one galls so many of us. Because Duke decided to get their hands dirty with Maggette after recruiting Boy Scouts for 20 years and being held up as a paragon, and they got away with it.

Duke actually went to the national title two years after the back to back and fell short in Grant Hill's senior year.

Yall is very much in my vocabulary. Born, raised and will die in the south. There was nothing condescending or aggressive about my comment.

I have used it in speech before, but I have never used it to start a written sentence, unless it was for a intended effect. I may be generalizing, but I've been exposed to one to many smarmy pseudo-sophist Duke students while traveling through Durham in the past. Now run back to your board, and inform your brethren about this reply as well.

I come here because i love college BB.....UK is a great team, their fans are as passionate and involved as any fan base. I like that.. I don't come here to rip CAL or talk **** about UK....i come to observe, and to a small degree, engage in all that is college BB from a fan's perspective. Doesn't mean i won't throw a light hearted dig in here every once in a while. We have common enemies, we are sometimes foes.

I just don't get it with all the hostility......you guys have plenty of banners, you're always competeing for more......why shouldn't we want to enjoy making some of that kind of history ourselves?
