2012 had two five star freshmen who returned as sophomores in Lamb and Jones and a Senior leader in Miller.

2016 will have none of those.

The overhyping of this team continues.

No, this teams has no MKG, it has no D lamb, it has no 6th man like Darius Miller, and it certainly has no AD.

Just let this team be what it is. Stop with the insane comparisons. I want them to be a title contender too, but damn.

Was hoping someone said this.

MKG was a star at the 3. We hope Gabriel can be something similar but we knew what MKG was. He never disappointed.

Imagine if the projection was right on MKG? He was projected to be 6'10-7'0 tall in his freshman year judging by his average growth up to that point. He didn't keep growing like that, but woah.

We wont have a Doron Lamb but Derrick Willis should be able to give us that knock down 3pt shooter. He should shoot in the 40's easily.

Personally I think our 2013 team was better than UK's 2012 team.
Well of course they were better, they were getting bj's from hookers before and after the games! Lol what a joke of a program. I mean Cal owns pitno. Enough said!

IF the recruiting assessments are on track and the rankings are correct:

Our guard play will be better on both ends of the floor. Teague was less than a 2:1 ATO ratio.

While I think Gabriel has big shoes to fill, trying to be better than MKG, I do love the prospect of FINALLY having quality 3's in Matthews and Gabriel. I think Matthews could really come alive next year.

We won't ever see an Anthony Davis-type again. No recruit next year is going to be as big of a factor as him. BUT, just like our guards, we'll have more quantity down-low. SKJ/Bam/Lee/Hump could be better than AD and T. Jones.

Amazingly, 2012 was really a 6-man rotation with Wiltjer getting 10 minutes or so. Pretty amazing to think that Kentucky got it done with just 5 underclassmen and a senior in Darius Miller. All this time, we talk about getting these stacked teams where we have 4-5 guards and 5-6 bigmen. But what has it gotten us?

Maybe there's something to be said about finding the right guys, and giving them 30-35 mpg.

Just think if Liggins had came back his senior year. 40-0??????

Depends on who comes back. As always with Cal teams we have a bunch of unknowns with the roster in April. At least we have less unknowns as compared to most years.

I don't think a team needs to have upperclassmen. Again, with 2012 you had 4 freshman, sophomores in Jones and Lamb, and senior Miller off the bench.

Miller was very suspect his first 3 years here. We weren't even sure how good Lamb and Jones would be in their 2nd years (turns out, pretty good). We have a LOT of returning players who could take that next step forward. I'm not worried about experience, even if Briscoe, Ulis, and Lee leave. We'll still have Hump, Willis, and Matthews. These guys are better than their stats have shown.

Teams with tighter rotations tend to be better. I mean, playing your best players for as many minutes as possible seems to be a pretty good strategy.

Ha, it would seem so. I understand the theory of running 8-10 man teams, but then the goal should be to tire the other team out from the tip. Because your shooters aren't going to get going with only 20-25mpg, playing with different players throughout the game.. your game plan has to be to just beat the other team over the head.

I'd prefer a 6-man rotation, with a back-up big and a shooter on the bench. That seems to be the sweetspot.

I don't think a team needs to have upperclassmen. . . .

I agree. Unless you have designs on being the best team in college basketball, making it to a Final Four or maybe even winning a title, there really is no true need for upperclassmen.

Could next year's squad be a dominant as the 2012 team that had Davis, MKG, Lamb etc? Or am I just wishing, hoping, dreaming?

I think we've established that next year's team won't be able to touch the 2012 champs in terms of quality and talent. As far as dominance goes, remind yourself they were a buzzer-beater and a [presumably] thrown SEC tourney game away from 40-0.

However, whether next year's team will be similarly dominant in the context of their own 2016-17 season is a different matter. Depends how strong CBB is next season and who's all coming back.

But these young guys will probably take some lumps early, as they will lack solid returning veterans to steady the ship.

And Calipari prefers a tighter roation, always has. I agree tighter rotations seem to be a better oiled machine.
