If he plays with an edge, and his skills translate, then he could be the difference between a sweet 16 upset and another final four.

Let's not get our hopes up and put any pressure on him...He has never practiced a day....I doubt he could help any until March and I doubt Cal would play him then...

With all of the fouls called on us in the first half he'd atleast keep other players from picking up 3 in the first half

This is a silly question. No one here knows the answer to that. I doubt the coaching staff even knows at this point. Dude isn't even on campus yet.

He's going to give us nothing. We have too many players as it is cal is rotating. Wynard may see time but he will be a day 1 freshman when he comes into a season beginning to settle in. I don't see him breaking through unless injury.

Great thread. He is 6'10, 270 lbs. It is clear right now that we are lacking physicality out of our bigs. If anything, he will provide that big body to bang (giggity, nh). I am not gonna get my hopes too high, but I actually do think he will be somewhat valuable. He will join the team this month.

I respectfully disagree with one thing. I think his size is more 6'9" 240lbs. he is in great shape and dropped around 40lbs. Good Post

Yeah. Usually they always bump their height and weight up a little bit in the books. Was just going off this tweet:

New Zealand power forward Tai Wynyard (6-10, 270), who will join the team this month.

well think again because Tai was officially measured at the Nike Hoop Summit in April. The guy came in at 6'11 in shoes and weighed 264 pounds. He is also strong and will out bench anybody on the current team easily. HE IS THE LUMBERJACK and he won't be pushed off the block. Tai would eat I-saac for lunch and poop skal.... strength wise.

He can't possibly be worse than Skal.
Skal is pretty good for a freshman that didn't play much competitive ball his senior year in high school. He is just inconsistent and needs more muscle. He has a remarkable shooting touch for a big man.

Coach Cal has seen him play in person literally one time...nobody on here has any clue as to what Wynyard can or cannot do to help the team.

Yes, he has shown a nice touch on his shots. He just has to learn to adjust to the you-play-for-Kentucky foul calls he's been getting. You can tell he's frustrated, and it is justified in some cases.

I'm going to keep following this thread because Tai keeps getting taller. I'm hoping he can hit a solid 7'3 by the time he plays in January. *fingers crossed*

Look, were you there to witness this. A key here is in shoes. This is December not April and the weight is not right. Correct me any time you like. I'm glad he picked UK, he will be around a while. I hope he is as good as your unrealistic expectations!

I am going to teach the whole team the Haka war dance and I expect we will be able to use it before games by March!

Got like this kid.

Kentucky bound Tai Wynyard (@WynyardTai) has lost a lot of weight since the Hoop Summit. Moving really well. Looks great in this setting.

I don't care if he can shoot. He needs to play solid post D, and for the love of God ,rebound the ball. He will not get pushed around like Skal and Humphries. Guarantee he can be an effective big along side Lee.

Never say never. We lose Lee to injury, Alex to fouls and Ulis playing with a busted arm, we could have used him last night. Future injuries are the one thing that could keep this team from reaching their potential.

I think what kind of condition he is in plays a big factor . .But in the long run Cal knows best.

My 5'5" daughter was just listed at 5'8" on the basketball roster. I can see a growth spurt like that happening for him!

I say his size and strength would definitely help. That said, I am resisting the urge to think he will save our bacon inside. I would expect little from him (a few rebounds and some fouls) and hope to be surprised. Meanwhile, Lee, Poy and Skal need to play like they own the lane. We were way to tentative last night. You don't need to be 270lbs to play like you got a pair. I think they will get on track. This is not about the weight room but rather their approach to the game. Fortunately, that can be transformed quickly if they are willing to buy in.

I don't think it's fair to put the pressure of being an automatic contributor in our frontcourt on a kid we know nothing about yet. His size and reputation seem to indicate he will be a physical presence for us, but 1) that can be misleading (see Poythress) and 2) we don't know if his skillset is at a level that will allow him any minutes this year... I think one advantage of getting him that we can be pretty certain about is that he will provide a big, physical body for our guys to practice against daily.

Poythress should be filling this role for us, but mentally he just doesn't have it. We all kept hoping for it, but 4 years in and he still just doesn't show it with any consistency. At this point he just is what he is, and that is a player that looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane.

We don't have a player like him currently playing and that's for certain, we need a brute in the paint to run the dribble drive. Ofensive put backs is half the scoring.
