Another opinion piece about the UNC scandal:

Because the misconduct was done under an academic department and was not limited to a single sport, the NCAA will either have to penalize all of UNC’s sports teams whose players took the illegitimate classes, or penalize none of them. I also do not think that the NCAA will impose a postseason ban on UNC in 2016; it’s too quick of a turnaround, especially because the season will be coming to its conclusion close to the time when the NCAA will release its verdict. I would expect the NCAA to hand North Carolina basketball a penalty similar to this: postseason bans in 2017-19, a few years of probation, mandated vacation of their 2005 National Championship, and some scholarship reductions. However, could you imagine the public outrage if North Carolina wins the 2016 national title and then is banned from 2017’s postseason a few weeks later?
Will Roy Williams’ legacy be infinitely tainted? Could UNC’s extremely talented 2016 team be punished for a scandal that began before some of them were even born? Only time will tell.

In a just world they should have to forfeit every game for the last 20 years or when ever this cheating started. Would love to see this happen but I know it won't plus ban from tournaments for 5 years.

My conspiracy theory:

If UNC*** were to be hit hard in 2017 it would be too embarrassing for the NCAA to allow them to win the championship. UNC*** would get the hardest draw possible in the tournament and the refs would do them no favors throughout the tourney.

How about they just leak in February that major sanctions are coming and watch the chain reaction collapse that would unfold.

BTW, I have to wonder what UNC thinks about this film, especially if it's released in the middle of their most promising basketball season in years. If the film isn't everything he wants it to be, it could backfire and be a distraction and embarrassment (and after PackPride gets done with it, that's by far the most likely outcome.)

I also keep thinking about how Milo Hamilton thought he could come to Kentucky and suddenly be the biggest Kentucky fan on the planet. That didn't seem to work out so well.

Bradley isn't a lifelong UNC fan. He grew up in Ohio and went to OSU. He has absolutely NO idea of the overall culture in North Carolina outside of academia. His delusions of being the savior of UNC bball may be very short-lived.

UNC just fired three more people today related to the fraud. How do these folks keep getting fired when it was just two rogues in the AFAM department responsible for this?

Also looks like a previously unknown whistleblower was revealed today too. Since UNC pulled their little stunt to delay the COI and try to force a revised NOA, wonder if anyone has informed the NCAA so that they can add this guy to the interview list?

EDIT: just skimmed this earlier. Guess the third person just had some restrictions placed on activities. Wasn't completely terminated.

Is this what you are referring to:

  • Brent Blanton, associate director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA), held an at-will position exempt from the North Carolina Human Resources Act, and his employment was discontinued effective today (Nov. 12). This action was taken in accordance with UNC system and University policies. A copy of his discontinuation letter is available here.
  • Travis Gore, administrative assistant in the Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies, was terminated from that position effective today (Nov. 12). This action was taken in accordance with state law and University policies relating to employees subject to the North Carolina Human Resources Act. A copy of his dismissal letter is available here.
  • Roberta (Bobbi) Owen, professor of dramatic art and former senior associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, is permanently restricted from having any future programmatic or administrative leadership responsibilities at the University. Her faculty employment is not otherwise affected. A copy of her notification letter is available here.
  • Three other employees were cleared of wrongdoing: Corey Holliday, associate director of athletics; Alphonse Mutima, lecturer, Department of African, African-American and Diaspora Studies; and Andre’ Williams, associate director of development, Arts and Sciences Foundation, and former director of football student-athlete development. Their notification letters are posted here, here and here.

I would think that UNC firing Blanton is a blow to Bradley Bethel who is trying to argue that the academic support staff didn't do anything wrong? I see that documentary starting to burn. He thought he was going to burn Willingham and Smith![roll]

Interesting that the athletics people were cleared and the academics were fired. This goes along with the powers that be trying to frame it as an academic problem. As ridiculous as it appears, they continue to attempt damage control. They are really shameless.

Here's a new USA Today article, that I didn't see mentioned here.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...academic-investigation-marcus-paige/75586956/

Of note:

In June, UNC made public the notice of allegations the NCAA sent it; the NCAA is treating the case not as academic fraud but rather impermissible benefits. The apparent good news for the men's basketball program: Neither Williams or any member of his staff was accused of committing any NCAA violations.

Wait, I thought you all kept saying I was dumb because this is what I was saying (in addition to many others in the media).

So, are you saying they're wrong, that Roy/coaches did commit violations according to the NOA?
Pretty much every sport at has committed violations, including men's basketball and Roy is in charge of that program. By that writer's logic, no program will be punished because no coaches were specifically mentioned in the NOA.

The article also says UNC committed academic fraud and that 167 players were enrolled in the suspect classes. I guess you think they should be congratulated because they found 1 student athlete on the UNC campus.

That's not the part of what you quoted that I was referring to. As to Roy, whether he was mentioned or not is irrelevant when it comes to what penalties the basketball team will face.

See, a picture might have helped Bobby understand the point. It went right over his head.....again.

Great, so you are agreeing with me; that is, you do acknowledge that neither Roy nor MBB coaches were mentioned as committing ANY violations. Maybe you can help fight the good fight with me then, because A LOT of posters here seem to think they were mentioned to have committed violations.

Wait, so Dan Kane has had this email since last year and he's yet to write anything about it???

I'm curious as to where you saw on that PDF that the "Dan" mentioned in the salutation was Dan Kane as opposed to another individual named Dan. I'm looking at a small screen, so perhaps I missed it, but I don't seem to see that anywhere.

I've never argued otherwise, because there has never been a need to argue otherwise. Whether or not Roy was mentioned matters not to me. What matters is that there was organized and deliberate academic fraud occurring over nearly two decades to keep UNC basketball players eligible. The NOA has addressed this adequately.

Yes, I did assume that the Dan mentioned was the one and only Dan Kane (I think this is a good assumption considering the subject title and that it was sent to Jay Smith as well). I take back my previous comment and replace it with:

You mean Jay Smith has had this email for over a year and has yet to convince Dan Kane to write anything about it???

On a different note, I'm glad you stood up and admitted that Roy/coaches or MBB was mentioned to have committed any violations. I just wish the rest of the posters here who griped about Bilas will take the time to read the NOA. It might help lessen their expectations for UNC-destruction, if they really knew what was in the NOA and not what some wish was in the NOA. Maybe eventually they will read it...I guess one can always hope.

My post was facetious; I was aware of your assumption. I simply found it humorous that someone who incessantly harps on restricting commentary to include only what is stated explicitly, would have no problem posting an assumption that they believed bolstered their case. You're UNC through and through it would seem.

^^^^^ I agree with that notion and pray that it is correct. I don't think the NCAA wants UNC anywhere close to the 2016 National Title.
If this is true (and I hope it is), they should just go ahead and drop the hammer now.

As for Bilas, you've misinterpreted the source of other posters' frustrations with his comments. It's not the statement that the coaches weren't named, it's the implication that MBB did nothing wrong and should escape punishment.

Also, it did not escape me that you slipped MBB into your post, whereas your previous couple were limited to Roy/coaches. Stating that MBB committed no violations is not accurate. To the contrary, MBB was the recipient of numerous and significant extra benefits and this is plainly stated. This does not have to be delineated as a standalone allegation. It is an extension of the allegation against those who were the source of the extra benefits.

I'm curious, how many times one has to read the NOA before the words change? Those words have to change. If they don't change, that means Bobbi Perv is a lying stack of crap. I keep reading, but the words are the same each time. Surely they must change eventually. You guys don't think Bobbi would lie do you?

Your cheating pit of fraudulent academic filth is going down Bobbi. Thanks for the opportunity to point out that you support that diploma printing slime once again.

Keep in mind that Bethel is trying like mad to clear the academic support staff because of the connection with the athletics. But, UNC is basically confessing a problem by firing Blanton. I don't think UNC is buying Bethel's stupid argument that the staff truly thought Crowder was a legit TA.

I did not intend to trick you or anything, I simply forgot it in the prior comments.

The NOA says the academic counselors provided impermissible benefits to players, including MBB players, while never charging Roy/coaches or MBB with any violations. And I think you're wrong about the complaining wrt Bilas. Lot's of posters here complained that he was lying when he said:

Jay BilasVerified account‏@JayBilas
@DKBlev I did, in response to what was posited on SportsCenter. Williams and men's basketball were not named or charged with wrongdoing.

and also

Jay Bilas ‏@JayBilas Oct 21
@bartconway Ken Wainstein, independent investigator, found Williams was not complicit. Walden not charged by NCAA. What, NCAA covering up?!

and, who can forget

Jay Bilas ‏@JayBilas Oct 21
@AEmory1116 No, it's not. There was not one specific allegation charging Roy Williams or Men's Basketball with wrongdoing.

Oh yeah, it appears Bilas thinks that MBB is included with Roy/coaches as I did above. Do you disagree with Bilas and other media? Since he and others stand by "they [Roy, coaches, MBB teams] were not mentioned as committing violations"?

I know what posters typed and that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the underlying frustration that led them to respond.

It is true that there is not an enumerated allegation specific to MBB. It is equally true that MBB was named in the allegations as having committed violations. Bilas takes the first fact and incorrectly assumes this equates to no allegation of wrongdoing against MBB. On that point, he is mistaken.

The NOA clearly states that MBB players received extra benefits. To receive an extra benefit is a violation. That MBB is alleged to have committed violations is not something that has to be articulated in an NOA as a stand alone allegation with its own number. It is an extension of the allegation against those that were the source of the extra benefit.

Bethel strikes me as an individual who is of slightly above average intelligence and performed well in school due to effort, but now believes his intellect is far greater than it actually is. My experience is that those types tend to dig in their heels and create bigger problems for themselves. Will be fascinating to see how this plays out.

Regarding his premise, there are numerous emails from athletics academic counsellors to university faculty requesting that an independent study be offered or a course added to the bulletin. How anyone could then try to position this as being driven solely by the academic side boggles my mind.

Also, I'm pretty sure Bilas is not as dumb as you're implying. But it's not just Bilas, several others in the media say exactly what he said. Are they all too dumb to understand this? I seriously doubt it. But, that's me.

The thing that really pisses me off are the idiot UNC fans that just will not admit wrong doing. They are part of the "tell a lie big enough and long enough" crowd. Thats why I can't have any respect for them. If they would just admit there was some massive cheating issues and they need to work on it and pay the punishment, then I could at least feel sympathy for them as fans. But Nooooo...their arrogance and stupidity is beyond stomach churning. This is why I hope they get the death penalty and we can shove their arrogance down their throats.
