A petition is gathering steam for the removal of the confederate carving on the granite mountain. I was there as a boy and remember seeing it, but for those who have never seen it may want to visit before it is removed.

A proposal was made to remove the Confederate carving from Stone Mountain Park.[18] However, according to Georgia state law, no one is allowed to alter the figures carved upon the stone face. Any changes within the state park would require approval by the state legislature.[19]

Even if the state house approved it, it would take years to actually do it, between environmenal and engineering studies

Millions of dollars in taxes are collected each year from there. Pick out several thousand protesters who receive government assistant and tell them no longer will they be receiving benifiets. It will stop quickly.
I'm pretty sure most people aren't going there for that.

Better visit any monument you can soon. America makes me very sad right now.

Once all the confederate stuff is gone they will go after the founders. Once all the founders are gone they will go after the constitution. Once the constitution is gone our country and what it stands for is gone.

Im curious not if but when is Thomas G Clemson and Ben Tillman erased from the history books. Ole Thomas has a pretty historical monument named after him.

The real question will be "how" and "where" the monuments will be moved/moved to. I think it's a foregone conclusion they're coming down from most of their current locations. So.....what to do?

I think the smart move is to relocate them to Confederate cemeteries where they can Rest In Peace next to their men (heck they'd probably rather be with their men anyway!) Or move them to hometowns, places of birth/death, or better yet move them to battlefields.

The bottom line is there is a place for these monuments, but sadly I don't think we're smart/mature enough to find s solution.

There is already a thread on......wait for it.....FGF on whether Clemson would change our name & remove TGC's statue. To their credit, some of the posts are rational and mention they have plenty of buildings named after slaveholders (NTM part of their campus was built by slaves and with materials made by slaves. And, their presidents, faculty & possibly the university itself owned slaves).

Thing is about TGC is that Clemson was started after the civil war. I think that makes a big difference.

But, after that it will be a school used prison labor and then it will be an entity used labor before the passage of minimum wage. It won't stop anytime soon.

First off, seriously doubt this gets approved. Secondly, the time and cost to it would be astounding. Lastly, who gives that much of a **** as to what's on Stone Mountain.

Not making any particular argument here, but to get a grasp of this general issue it's important to learn when a lot of these monuments went up (1920s-50s, when white supremacy was a major movement and people were rebelling against civil rights and the notion that all humans are created equal).

Regardless of what side you are on, it's important context.

I agree, Larry. That's why the flag was put on the state house dome. Should've come down. Just feel that Stone Mountain is a historic work of art that is fairly benign in its depiction. Others will disagree. Just one person's opinion of course.

Gotcha. I really know nothing about Stone Mountain so can't really comment on it.

So the monuments were put up to patronize African Americans by the leadership of white supremacy casts. If true Im completely against this sort of action which I will research this tonight. Good post

Bill Bryson's book One Summer: America, 1927 is an incredibly good book, in large part for its ability to describe what life was like during that time.

The KKK had a tremendously strong grip (not just in the South, either). The leading scientific minds were trumpeting Eugenics.

Just crazy, crazy stuff.

Born and raised in SC and I always took confederate memorials as a way of life. Never questioned it.

Now that I understand the "why" and the "when", well I'm not so sure I support the celebration of these figures. The civil war and reconstruction period are an important part of our history that can not be forgotten and should be taught to each generation in totality(as much as is possible).

But, should we really put these generals on a pedestal? Especially when the south first did so primarily to buck the civil rights movement? The whole situation leaves a bad taste in my mouth...most news does nowadays.

The mountain will still be there for people to enjoy. What makes you think the sculpture is benign?

I do...when have you ever seen these people get what they want & just stop? They always want more...

I think you underestimate the George Soros-types of this country...some just want to see this nation burn...
You do understand that most of these monuments were built by white supremacists who were trying to fight the civil rights movements. These were men who indeed wanted to watch the world burn.

I still remember when this Soros-funded liberal suggested we take the confederate flag down. Just glad we have a president who doesn't listen to such nonsense.

Do you actually believe that?

No reason not to. There is already noise to rename parks named after George Washington. Thomas Jefferson is now villified. So are Thomas Sumter and Francis Marion, who were essential to winning the Revolution.

It is coming.

Off topic but Iceland has effectively begun practicing Eugenics for Down's Syndrome. There was an article on CBS Website about it:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/down-syndrome-iceland/

It apparently isn't a government program but the mentality is disturbing nontheless. Especially when you consider that the prenatal tests for Down's are not all that reliable.

What is the statute doing that makes it malignant? Are there people pointing at the statute saying "that makes me superior!" Are there people saying the statute is keeping them down? And if so how?

The only disability in life is a bad attitude.

Used to work as a conductor onthe train tour there inthe late 70's. Stone Mountain is the largest block of exposed granite in the world. Rock from this mountain iwas used in the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial etc etc. Made a lot of dough there back then $1.67 an hour to start...
