Tony Shell was actually one of the better passing QBs I've ever seen play for MSU. Doesn't belong anywhere near this list.
Absolutely agree..........Again, another good player that played on some incredibly ****** teams..........He lit up Georgia his senior.........We almost beat them and lost in the final seconds..........

With all the talk of the ineptness of our backup QB's, I'd like to hear some of y'all's opinions on who y'all think is the worst QB to ever start a game for MSU. There are plenty of candidates, and I know Michael Henig will be a favorite, but guys like Kyle York, Tray Rutland, Josh Riddell, Chris Parson, and from the way back machine Mike Davis all garner consideration. What says the Sixpackers?

No, the '96 Alabama game wasn't one with a squirrelly, unexpected backup QB. At least, not Polish Rifle-grade unexpected. Pretty sure that was a Derrick Taite team.

My dad and I were present for the 96 game, which was a very surprising win.
Sorry - Typo. Was the 1995 game when in Keystone and it was the Bama game but he didn’t play in that one either.
It was the 1993 game where he was the 5th string QB and had to play.

I vote for Rutland.

I someone mention Riddell. Didn't he start a game vs South Carolina, make a spectacular throw on a route down the left sideline, then promptly blow out his knee? My wife frequently corrects my recollections, so I don't want to assume I'm right...

Hudson was an enigma. VERY highly rated QB in the early 90's out of LaGrange, GA and that was/is a powerhouse program. Matter o' fact, some had him rated as 5 stars. Played in 3 games in '92 and was 1/5 for -6 yards with one int. Transferred out the following year to UAB.
Rodney Hudson was killed in Baton Rouge after that season. He did not transfer.

Ike WIlson is the QB signee that was killed. Rodney Hudson did transfer to UAB.

I dont think Ike Wilson ever made it to campus. He had multiple drug (intent to distribute) arrests in high school. Marcus Bullard was a choir boy compared to Ike Wilson. JWS didn't always recruit good kids.

Time's getting faster all the time, no doubt.

The '96 Bama game remains one of my favorite memories with my dad. I was out of college, working and living in Starkville. Met him at the game. Official attendance was around 40k, very largely Bama fans. I remember someone tossing a handful of unused tickets into the bushes next to the southwest corner of the stadium maybe 45 minutes before kickoff as I was walking in. We weren't terrible, but we'd shat ourselves against Kentucky the week before, Bama was ranked No. 9 I believe and confidence was not high.

It was the sort of game you have to go to if you hope to be there to witness a win over Bama in person. I'd suffered through several in the student section in the early 90s. Bama is not a game we win when we need to win it - it just happens when it happens, it seems, and it happened that night.

This might be the worst single game performance by a QB in MSU history.
August 30, 2007. LSU 45, MSU 0
Michael Henig: 11-28, 120 yards, 6INT. Also -22 rushing yards.
Craig Steltz had three of those interceptions and had 100 return yards off of them. Steltz had nearly as many return yards off interceptions as Henig had passing yards for the entire game.

Wesley carrol? He didn’t have the physical tools to be a good qb in the SEC but he sadly is still nowhere near our worst. Had a solid career at FAI after leaving state.

He was awful in 08. Was decent in 07. Pretty sure he had more INTs than TDs for his career. He had a much better career after he left MSU but I’m not counting that. If we rank our QBs since 2000, he isn’t that high up that list.

Billy Pucket is a RS Freshman. He shouldn't be getting playing time for an SEC team right now, but I'm not sure I'd put him in the worst discussion based on his current stats as a RS Freshman.
It’s not his fault he’s playing but it is pretty bad. I do think by his 4th & 5th year he’ll be a quality backup for us.

Billy Puckett is far and away the answer.

That kid makes Kyle York look like Tom Brady, Tyson Lee look like Baker Mayfield, Tray Rutland look like Kordell Stewart, and Mike Henig look like Brett Favre.

I could have sworn that Hudson played like 2 series in the Egg Bowl in 1992, then went home to Baton Rouge and was shot and killed. I appear to be wrong about. Thanks for clarifying.

Hudson was from LaGrange, GA and played high school football with MSU & NFL CB Walt Harris. Ike Wilson was from New Orleans. Hudson played the 2nd series of every game in 1992 which was the genius idea of Watson Brown.

Definitely a different game now, but that is a pretty solid argument in defense of Pucket, or maybe just a really damning one against Croom. Not that QB rating is the end all be all, but basically for all of Croom's years, the only year we had a QB finish with a higher QB rating than Puckett's current 111.3 (which is generated playing as a redshirt freshman against Alabama, LSU, and Oklahoma), was Tyson Lee outdoing him by a whole 1.7 points when he also had the benefit of playing La Tech (and losing), SE La, Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee, Kentucky, and Akansas.

All that may be true, but I watched all of those guys throw the football, even Tray Rutland as I was unfortunately at that Auburn game. Those guys, maybe outside of Tyson(although he could let it go if he needed to) had 10x the arm strength of Puckett.

Puckett just isn't a D1 QB. Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that any of those guys belonged in the SEC, none did. But they all could AT WORST push the ball down the field and hit the layups. Puckett can't do either of those things.

I don't mean to continue to crap on the kid. He's probably a great person and he could probably transfer down to D2 this offseason and try to win a starting job at somewhere like Harding or West Alabama.

Don’t know if he was the worst but he drove me crazy. I think it was against ole miss, receiver wide open, through a bullet and hit hit the receiver in stride, in the foot. Bruce Threadgill?

Great recount of a great night.

For the original question, the answer is too many.
