The point is, bringing mediocre talent from Iowa state was not the only answer. He made the decision to bring his team because he mis- evaluated the talent he had.
Ah yes as competing against schools who spend more with guys you don't have preexisting relationships with was probably the sane approach. Even more so when you know you aren't out bidding many of them that you really need. The portal is a nice to have but when you are returning 4 starters and a K while replacing 45 spots on the roster (basically a 2 deep)....the correct thing to do is look elsewhere and not secure even a mediocre roster because the fan base that roots for you is too stupid to understand what it's actually like to hold that job and do it.....but man can they toss out ideas. It's laughable that people who follow this program are so disconnected from where they actually sit.

Ok , you are right.HCMC has done a phenomenal job, better than anyone could have expected. How could I have missed it. With all the difficulties, how many coach of the year awards is he up for!🤣

He should be gone by end of year 3 if we don't see significant improvement. Do you want to can Campbell now? Yet you were saying "thank you sir may I have another" as we were OSU and Michigan's and every other big game opponent's bit$$ for 10 straight years?
So now we are almost everyone's *****. That's progess? Sounds like a plan. We can't beat Ohio State or Oregon. Screw it let's lose to virtually every one.

Yep, no one here tossed out "ideas" when Franklin was the coach.🤭

In other words you made a dumb comment got called out on it and now need to say MC is the coach of the year like anyone was remotely babbling that...it's a child's take so congrats on that heavy lifting. If that isn't the case, tell me how you expected him to fill out 46 roster spots with 4 returning starters and Barker. Was it the the incredible PSU NIL fund that was going to wow everyone across the nation as none of the other 15-20 schools ahead of PSU in NIL money would ever think of doing that....even more so with the lack of a coaching relationship there? He was just going to outbid everyone as that is what PSU is known for, just blasting out that cash and making a splash.

It's almost like may PSU fans are in denial and think they are a top 10 school with unlimited funds and these kids from elsewhere have no other options than a HC they don't know who just got hired. 32 HC's got fired last year, but PSU was the only one trying fill spots. Whether or not MC turns the corner in a year or two remains to be seen....and just in case you didn't know or don't understand how many people will be gone from a Rutgers equivalent roster.....it's not going to be great again in one year. If you thought this as a top roster heading into this year....and still think it's just a HC and that is all talent up there....you're on fire. Saying coach is bad and the options were limitless is clearly an honest well thought out take. How many times have you seen a school replace a HC and the 2 deep to just no drop off at all while only returning 4 position players....probably a long long list.

No, I support HCMC, but…….
He has done a horrible job thus far, and does not appear to have made a bad situation any better, and what I have seen, he has made it worse. No matter what you say, nothing can rationalize this as a good job. We’ve moved the goal posts several times because it continues to to get worse. And he did not lose his 2 deep, Penn state did, but he brought his with him. And you are complimenting him for bringing in and creating in your words, a Rutgers equivalent roster. Talk about a dumb comment.

Again what did you expect him to do while filling an entire 2 deep roster on O and D? What is your genius take that he somehow missed? Nobody is complimenting him for bringing in a less talented roster as some of us understand that filling a 2 deep in basically weeks isn't a easy thing to do. If you think this roster is so talented, name one DL that you see currently who is a lock for the NFL? Do RB too. It's not a dumb comment to those that can see the roster and realize....yeah that isn't going to cut it in the B1G, but understanding it was more of a bandaid to get a roster together. I'm not the one crying like I didn't see this coming....wonder why that is?

You stated this was an easy schedule before you saw this roster take a snap....I think you said 10 wins easy.
It is an easy schedule. This is a veteran team in terms of p4 experience led by a 4 year starting QB
No one used the talent excuse 3 or 4 weeks ago. It's an excuse for the poor performance.

Nobody saw this coming. Not even Campbell and staff. There is no way they thought they would be 0-4 on the B10. They probably knew there would be more challenges than what the fans thought but we have performed way worse than even the most pessimistic projections.

So what happened?

I think Becht's play is probably the biggest factor. I mean if he just plays an average game vs Wisky and Michigan we probably are 2-2.

Howard and Granville out. I think we may have a shot to beat USC with those two guys.

To me the mystery and head scratcher are the defensive line, LBs, safeties, RBs and O-Line are all worse than expected. Did Campbell know we would be this poor in all these position groups? No, I don't think so until he saw them in live game action versus real B10 opponents. But who really knows what he was expecting.

The NW loss was something no one anticipated but happens. They are much better than anyone predicted. In fact, they could make the playoff. They are the opposite of us, way outperforming pre season predictions.

Campbell clearly shares responsibility for how poor we have looked. I really hope we can get some mojo the back half of the season and go on a winning streak.

Nevertheless, all this whining about Campbell is useless. It is what it is and now we know we have a roster with very little talent. It is now Campbell's responsibility to get this turned around in 3 possibly 4 (if we are generous) years to the point that we look like a team that can make a 24 team playoff or he should be fired. But let's be real, he's not getting fired now or even at the end of next season.

Our friend, Kraft? He's on a much shorter leash. This guy needs to really get it together and get our NIL budget to at least $40 million. And this needs to happen ASAP. As in the next 6 months. We have a lot of mouths to feed and we can either drift into irrelevant mediocrity or worse or actually step up our game with NIL resources and become a relevant player in the modern world of professional college football.

-We need a roster overhaul via the portal which could be around $15 million

-We need to retain a few key guys, Dixon, Howard maybe a couple more. This could be $3-5 million

-We need to invest in the '28 class. Perhaps $20 million.

So the low rnd of that is $38 million but I still don't think that is enough.

We can save money by saying "Thank you but your services are no longer required" to the dead weight and reinvest their NIL to more productive players, hopefully. Not sure how much we save.

So Krafty along with this GM we have (I don't even know his name) have their work cut out for them. And this GM I think came from ISU, and should be on the hot seat too. So far our talent identification as been very underwhelming.

I stand corrected and would amend my statement to say, virtually no one here or in the media.....used talent 3 or 4 weeks ago.....
I didn't think this team could measure up to the top conference teams....but given the schedule, I thought them capable of winning at least 9 games.
My statement was "the best thing about this team is the schedule." For which I was ostracized by the BWICAC.
The Wisconsin game was lost by very poor in game coaching decisions. The Michigan game should have been a W without a turnover prone QB. It's very clear to me that this should have been a 9 win team.
I truly believe that PSU's offense will look like a machine vs. Mighty Purdue. The run game should return for the first time since Buffalo. This will allow Becht play action success and deep shots.
Minnesota is the only team of the remaining 5 "with a pulse." However, they are schizophrenic.
Penn State ranked 3rd in the conference in roster "snaps" and 10th nationally in "starts." 36 roster players were entering at least their 4th season of play and Becht a was the "winningest QB in college football."
Purdue, Rutgers and Maryland are "must wins." Washington, once touted as a worthy opponent is toothless. I think this will be a 2025 repeat with some momentum gained in the last 5 games. Then it will be who stays and will PSU acquire real talent in the portal or will we continue to celebrate 3 star talent in our quest for "excellence at the highest level?"

Campbell was outrecruited by teams that spend LESS.

If you are going to use that excuse then osu might as well have kept Franklin and accepted the fact that osu spends more.

Keep: Zayas, Dixson, McPherson.
Everyone else on defense can go and that includes Granville

Keep: Cousins, Howard, Goodman, Manske. Rapp.

Everybody else on offense can go

The list is actually quite small so there should be enough money available to keep them even with inflated values for other teams.

I will keep Barker and Robinson for special teams. The punters can go.

I'm also cutting loose all those tight ends we cannot use because of this disaster with 12, 13 and 14 personnel.
So you're dumping the QBs, Manske & Evans?

"deep shots", to who if Howard & Sowell can't play? Eskildsen, who seems unable to challenge for 50/50 balls? Will Zay Robinson break out? What happened with WRs Gonzalez & Jones?
Has there been a reshuffling of the OL to develop a credible running game?

My post was pre injury report that tagged Sowell. I believe the Purdue run defense is ranked about #130. I believe they will serve as the prescription for PSU's anemic run production. PSU has defeated Purdue 11 consecutive times. The real truth is PSU is entering the weakest part of a weak schedule. As bad as they are, they are clearly better than all remaining opponents with the possible exception of Minnesota.

He knew he didn’t have the talent. He knew Becht’s weak arm strength. He knew the interceptions of the past. He knew he was foot slow.

it was all there in front of us and everyone refused to see it.

Oh the same pundits that had PSU #2 the year before? The real men of genius...who outside of 4-5 programs a year are throwing darts to see what sticks. What PSU team have you ever seen return 4 starters and basically replaced most of it's 2 deep? EVER, name a year? I'm not a physic, but I said there is a decent chance PSU takes a step back and 8-9 wins (which is still out of reach really) is probably a bit more realistic. New HC or not, you don't bring in a new OC, DC, 2 deep....and think it's easy when you haven't seen the roster take a snap. You lose 18 starters and replace the staff....yeah there may be some bumps in the road. Look at how many will be gone off of this mediocre roster for next year as well....even before the portal. It's not going to be great next year too.

There isn't a quick fix for this and just because people don't like hearing that doesn't make it less true. PSU will not splash in the portal and there is only so much frosh can do....but hopefully at least they get an above average RB between this year and next. Maybe some DL that can actually even sniff a QB or start to create some pressure. Howard's price went up vastly and in this world where the kids have agents.....guess what he can be poached and it won't be a shock.

PSU has a big stadium and fans that think they are still a big dog.....but they're not. Once a decade being relevant for close to 3 decades now means it's a decent program...nothing more. Do I like it...nope, but I know this school doesn't out recruit what used to be it's peers and certainly won't outspend them. I get people had blind optimism, but in Marshall's warped case....he was saying 10 wins easy over and over again because he's still so upset they bothered to fire James without considering his feelings so he wants MC to fail.....just so he can say I told you so. PLENTY of posters who pay attention to the whiny old attention ***** know exactly what he is.

P4 schools that went through coaching changes - and number of "new guys" they had to add to rosters (recruits and portal). Listed below.

All of these programs except Michigan had several weeks BEFORE the portal opened to have their new coach in place (I posted that info in another thread - aside from Michigan (less time) and VT (more time), all had nearly the exact same amount of time) and to work to retain the guys they liked on the "current" roster.

PSU DID NOT have some extraordinary number of "new guys" they had to bring in - relative to other programs that went through coaching changes.
And PSU, unlike several other programs, was bringing in a new coach from another P4 program (which SHOULD have been a big advantage wrt accumulating capable players)
PSU also likely had an "existing" roster of far more blue chip players/prospects than did most of the others - although they certainly lost many of them (as did others)

Many of these programs showed significant improvement in Year 1 - or maintained a relatively high level.

PSU screwed the pooch in year 1 of talent retention/ acquisition. That is so damn obvious and indisputable that it ain't even worth debating.
All the revisionist history and BS alibies are just silly.
It happened.
It was not good.
Time for the PSU powers-that-be to face it (I expect they have), and make sure it doesn't happen again (I expect they are trying to make sure it doesn't - time will tell).

Oklahoma State - 79
Iowa State - 77
UCLA - 63
LSU - 62
Auburn - 61
PSU - 54
Ole Miss - 53
VaTech - 51
Michigan St - 51
Florida - 50
Kentucky - 50
Cal - 50
Michigan - 45 (Michigan was the only program that had "coaching change" after the portal had already been opened)

Interesting that Oklahoma state, LSU,UCLA,Kentucky, Florida among others are not suffering like PSU.

Of those, OTTOMH, only one brought in an existing P4 head coach, with a roster he recruited elsewhere to "poach" (LSU) - which should be a huge advantage.

I expect PSU will win a handful of games - as we go through these last 5 in-conference cupcake games. The more they win they better most folks will feel (understandably so)
But whether they end up with 3 wins or 8, the pooch-screwing of Year 1 talent retention/acquisition is just a historical thing at this point. That has to change - the sooner the better, obviously.

Only the moronic BWICAC will feel better about 4 wins (5 possible) against teams without a pulse. This had to be a 9 win minimum season to create momentum moving forward. PSU struck out on Wood and failed to flip their desperation target who was committed to Missouri. The recruiting is dismal (somewhere between 6th and 8th in the conference) and that appears to be the ceiling for this program moving forward, We're reduced to celebrating "under valued" 3 star commits and storming the field when defeating Purdue. All off season we were entertained with fiction about a mythical coach who saw talent where no other coach could and then "coached them up" to compete with the 4 and 5 stars we didn't need. In addition, this same coach would weave magic with marked in game coaching improvement.
Now the excuse is "not enough talent!" I thought we didn't need more talent because we had a staff that "coached em up."

If I hear/read "What do you do when adversity hits" one more time - I think I will puke.
Adversity hit - and things crumpled
It hit again
And again
And again
Since September, time and again, adversity hit (maybe not always "adversity" per se, maybe a lot was just old-fashioned "stinking it up"), and things crumpled. We KNOW what they do. Good grief.
Now, can they STOP crumpling when adversity continues to build? Good Lord, one would hope so -sometime. It kind of has to happen, eventually, right?

Everyone knows that kind of talk is all coach-speak babble. But good grief, change it up a bit :)

Agree. What does HCMC do when adversity hits? Has Rocco under throw it into coverage….

Interesting read. I believe HCMC can turn it around, but I can’t give him a total pass as I think there is still coaching decisions that have failed him. Hope he proves me wrong and wins the last 5, but I’m not seeing it.
I thought he'd win 10. But recruiting isn't good enough and NIL won’t be adequate to fill all the holes. 2027 and 28 schedules are challenging. You are correct. Game and time management are questionable.
