I have a question about guys we don't want to keep next season who have eligibility. Can we just say your services are no longer required and then have their NIL money available to spend on a guy in the portal who we do want? Do we have that option?

It's a one on one discussion. Year to year free agency. The bizarre part is that the agent and the GM work it out and then tell the coach. smh

You don't have to take away a scholarship. Cut the NIL to $0, and the rest will work itself out.
When I got my current job 22 years ago, they disliked the person that preceded me to the point that they made her office the wiring closet. They said sometimes she would come out sweating with her makeup running. That is kind of a version of what you’re suggesting.

Not really, As crazy as it sounds, this would be putting the kid in the same exact position as every other kid on the team 6 years ago.

I don't care how they do it elsewhere now. At Penn State, kids should not have their scholarship taken from them as long as they are playing here and working toward a degree.
What percentage of the kids - do you think - would much care if they "took his scholarship away", so long as they continued to pay him (and, of course, he didn't have to at least pretend to be taking classes)

College pro athletes no longer have anything to do with classes. They are not committing to 4 years, so it should longer be subsidized

There are roster limits to consider but if we cut a guy's NIL to zilch I doubt they are hanging around to play for nothing. It basically is like if your employer said we can't pay you anymore.

Just like we need to identify the best possible portal talent we need to identify the dead weight and show them the door. This is a business and we need to reallocate that NIL to be more productive for us.

it isn't college football, get used to it
I still love it, but it’s definitely having a negative impact on the NFL. These guys are not developing properly in college, especially when they’re bouncing a couple times from team to team.

Keep: Zayas, Dixson, McPherson.
Everyone else on defense can go and that includes Granville

Keep: Cousins, Howard, Goodman, Manske. Rapp.

Everybody else on offense can go

The list is actually quite small so there should be enough money available to keep them even with inflated values for other teams.

I will keep Barker and Robinson for special teams. The punters can go.

I'm also cutting loose all those tight ends we cannot use because of this disaster with 12, 13 and 14 personnel.

And you advise them at the end of season meetings that they are highly unlikely to ever see any live action in Beaver Stadium but are welcome to be practice fodder.

I have not researched; are you specifically speaking on QB development translating to the NFL or what specifically?

That's the only solution to being competitive. I have a feeling this MC will continue paying ineffective players top dollar.

College football is a pro sport now, worrying about getting a degree is laughable, sadly

For quite a few of them, we already did. He's VT's problem now.
VT isn't having any problems. But Campbell brought 24 of his players from ISU and in case you haven't noticed, he made a serious error in judging their talent. Whatever the case, they are making lots of money. Becht alone is raking in about 1.5 million.
In case you haven't noticed, the best players on PSU are the ones Franklin brought here, VT is happy with a few (LOL) and Tennessee has a few defenders that might have helped PSU.
Are you enjoying excellence at the highest level yet? Fear not, PSU will take down mighty Purdue!

Except it's not. They'd still be getting a scholie worth over $50K per year to get a degree which is important to the 97% of kids who won't make the NFL.

Kinda like college football used to be.

If it was that important, you wouldn't have had so many kids leave during the off-season. PSU meant little to those kids. I doubt it means much to the kids on the team now. I don't know if it happened during the non-conference games, but I can't see these kids standing on the field singing the alma mater after a win. It would be completely insincere.

Unfortunately, or is it sadly - where are the Student / Athletes who as an Alum will embody the intrinsic values of Penn State?

The one-and-done basketball coaches produced restrictions from the NBA, but the greed of the NCAA has allowed 'agents' to shill for the money to be paid just to 'appear' for a team or school or coach, and in many cases - just for a year, while they move on for more $$.
The imperfections will multiply to the extent of unions, lawsuits and the stoking of fans pocketbooks .... until someone has the guts to say - Enough.

I think many of us 'hope' for that someone who will say - 'just what are we doing?'

Except that will not happen now and you aren't walking it back because old men in suits in the NCAA, at Universities, and within the conference were too greedy with the $$$'s that were coming in for years.

He should be gone by end of year 3 if we don't see significant improvement. Do you want to can Campbell now? Yet you were saying "thank you sir may I have another" as we were OSU and Michigan's and every other big game opponent's bit$$ for 10 straight years?

I'm okay keeping the schollie but not be on the football team, kind of an honor our commitment thing. So they actually become a real student.

The point is, bringing mediocre talent from Iowa state was not the only answer. He made the decision to bring his team because he mis- evaluated the talent he had.
Let's say he did. Now what? He is not getting fired any time soon, and Franklin is not coming back. Best we can do is give the guy a chance and hope it gets better.

Don’t want Franklin back, and I agree we give him chance, but the leash is much shorter than the old days when you built something, now you buy something. What you can’t say is he’s doing great, and the signs don’t look good. Do far he has:

-Brought in a ton of transfers who are underperforming
- paid $2M for a QB who thus far looks like he’d be a stretch in the patriot league.
- Playing RBs who can’t find the hole
- Most plays the players seem to lack an understanding on what they are trying to do

beyond the mess that Kraft created, HCMC has not looked up to the task. And though he may turn it around, the one advantage he should have is all these transfers should know how he coaches. You cannot chalk up all this to , “ He got the worse hand in semi pro football” because he didn’t.

Probably not 1 in 10 kids in the $$$ sports (and probably not 1 in 5 parents) give much of a damn.
And probably not 1 in 10 kids (maybe even less than that) get a MEANINGFUL degree/education.
And even those kids who may - at one point or another - think education is priority #1, will likely be disavailed of that thought by their coach.

And that has been trending for a long time - and you can lay a slice of the responsibility on a whole host of characters: Coaches, Kids, Parents, Administrators, etc etc etc etc .

It is what it is.
