The only reason Schiano would stay is because Rutgers lacks the financial resources to fire him,He has shown the inability to defeat B1G Ten competition which is the reason for the firing.

Hobbs will go down as the worst AD in the history of P4. The scandal is one thing but his early extensions of both Schiano and Pike completely handcuffed the next AD.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the conversations between Schiano and his agent and Hobbs at the end of the 6-6 2023 season, which ended with a blowout loss to MD, amongst other blowouts during the season, as to why he deserved an extension. Talk about a panic buy. And don’t tell me about the Pinstripe Bowl win over Miami. 2023 Miami was not 2026 Miami and half the Miami team didn’t play in the bowl.

That’s not even getting into the “take my guy off your list” to the national media about Ash being on the hot seat

That’s simple: Greg walked in with pics of Hobbs and Salim Beasley and dropped them on Hobbs desk. I think your giving me an extension.

In the post game Youtube review Richie said he heard from an insider that they have the money. Mike Broadbent said they admin wants to go smooth on the firing because GS has been around so long and done good things. They dont want to break his sword and rip his stripes off on his way out of then fort.

Schiano deserves to be fired. The last two years a total cluster flub.

But despite what the mods say, I can understand the money argument. He would be owed about 18 million, not including the other coaches, all that paid over time. Schools like Rutgers typically don't fire a coach until the remaining salary is 10-12 million. See eg, Maryland, NC State. Rutgers historically has had low donations to athletics. They don't have deep ticket sales. So who are these mysterious donors who will come up with the money, to pay the guy not to work?

That unjustified extension from Hobbs really F' Rutgers over.

If we use Maryland as a template, their guy had two bad 4-8 years before this disaster of year where he was fired, where Rutgers went 7-6, 5-7 and then the ludicrous year. So if RU follows the same course, he gets one more year. Even with Ash we had to suffer through four 1-3 win seasons before he was fired.

I don't know. I'll believe when I see it. But if history any guide, it's really a coins toss if he gets let go, even though he absolutely deserves it. I'm assuming the buy out needs to be donor funded, but maybe they can take it out of uni general purpose funds.

BK thing changes the analysis meaningfully. If you can get BK at less than his personal FMV, then maybe you can afford to let Schiano go with three years left on his contract. Still though, believe it when I see it. BK only comes here if there's meaningful commitment to NIL. We'll see; but what disaster of a year.

Or Greg could do the right thing and negotiate an exit where he does not get the full value of his buyout. He has enough money to retire comfortably. So his staying is all about ego and greed, and it is a sad way to end his tenure at Rutgers.

And I respectfully disagree on the money issue. His staff is bloated beyond necessity. Cutting the bloated staff saves money. Season ticket sales will plummet if he is back next year. Donations will stagnate and decrease. A spark provided by a coach like Bob Chesney would boost donations and ticket sales. Chesney has a base salary of $5.4M per year with performamce incentives.

Rutgers can find the money to cut the albatross loose, and they will see like UCLA and Indiana, it was well worth the cost.

You make some good points. We'll see. I guess it depends on who they can get. If the articles have any accuracy, they're saying the pool of candidates rather thin this year after the free for all last year. Get the right guy though, and increased ticket sales can make up for a lot. Really shocked on how much Rutgers spends on their FB program, and some of that the employee benefits that other states don't have. Cleary the ROI for Rutgers just not there.

I keep asking this question and no one can give me a reasonable answer, his contract already calls for him to receive 76% of the remaining value if he's fired. Why is he then going to take another cut on top of what was already negotiated?

Frankly, he owes the university nothing when you consider how much he had to endure with Rutgers doing everything on the cheap during 1.0. I also don't see him retiring anytime soon. He will continue working in one capacity or another.

Agree with the rest.

It does happen -ish, but it's a rare exception not the rule. If you fire someone just assume you have to pay what you owe and move on.

2 that come to mind.

UK owed Stoops a lump sum of money up front in like 30 or 60 days but he agreed to let them stretch out the payments. There was no reduction in the amount.

Chryst was paid an 11M lump sum in 2022 instead of the 20M he was owed that stretched out to 2027. I didn't get why he did that myself, that's quite a reduction and present value of money isn't that much different over 5 years.

He gets a percentage if fired because he is no longer working.

Not sure about your second paragraph. Sounds like he did Rutgers a huge favor blessing Rutgers with his taking the job. Many other jobs are a lot harder and pay a lot less. Boo hoo that he had to work hard. He has never learned to work smart like Cignetti does. He thinks what worked 20 years ago will work today.

Good man, good to the players, but the modern game has passed him by.

Hobbs hiring back in the day says it all…zero experience as an AD…zero experience at a large university…political hire…scandal to top it all off. NJ tax payer waste on full display.
Hobbs shmobbs.

You are incorrect. Hobbs was acting AD at Seton Hall. He was involved in the Pru Center deal. If you remember, Bob Mulcahy had no AD experience either, and he did fine. And on paper, Julie Hermann had a strong resume , and how did that work out.

The constant hand-wringing over the past gets us nowhere. We have a pro in charge now, and a President who gets it. I am confident they will move the program forward.

Gruninger was the worst AD in the northeast and his replacement turned the football program around, which got us into the Big Ten.
The Schiano hire turned football around which we can argue led to the Big Ten invite but I’m not sure that Mulcahy was a good AD. The basketball program was chaos under his tenure and if somebody hadn’t hand delivered Douby to Waters, it’s likely we wouldn’t have even had the ‘good’ 2005 season. I don’t think that getting lucky with Schiano means that Mulcahy was a good AD.

But the issue has been from all the way at the top, down. There just hasn’t been a commitment to winning and I don’t think our athletic departments have ever been set up the right way to succeed. Like most, I believe this is the type of profession that you need to first be a part of the leadership of a successful organization and then take what you learned over to another organization.

Best post in the thread.

Schiano is the only reason we are in a power 4 conference let alone the Big Ten.

He got us to a few bowl games in 2.0 but ultimately the game has passed him by. It didn't work out in the end. That's ok, it's time to move on. No need to be hostile to him.

Honestly the team 2 years ago filled with seniors should have been a 9-10 win team if not for all the injuries. He had a little bit of bad luck combined with bad decisions and failure to develop a legitimate QB.
