MSU, you are not quite grasping it. You a marveling at PSU thinking nothing can be done. The better question is how did they get there? His teams are breaking scoring records because up until DT stepping foot in Stillwater, Cael was just abusing how bad the programs have fallen behind in recruiting. Ok st under Smith was on life support, Ryan at Ohio st isnt a player anymore, Minny- go fish, Cornell- best years behind them and Iowa is a shell of itself and not a force. Most top kids don't even take Iowa serious under Brands.

SO what I see on the landscape is its going to take a cumulative whole by 2-3 teams to bring PSU back down to a manageable point range to ever win nationals again. The good news is that Ok State is off life support and charging hard. Ok state did everything possible but in YEAR 2. Imagine what each year moving forward will look like. Doesn't happen overnight so I dont get your attitude that DT has somehow peeked already.

But they are the only ones who are making any ground and getting back to a true wrestling bluebloods potential. Iowa is so far from the programs potential they have stalled out and looking to land the plane. So I am just baffled how you dont see putting JB in Iowa city wouldnt start trending back up. Then and only then can you have both Iowa and Ok st eating up the points difference that PSU is just accumulating because nobody was even close to them on any recruit. DT and Jax changed that. But only one team.

Iowa & Ok state have to start getting the recruits away from PSU that are going there without even thinking twice because Brands isnt the draw he use to be.

I can promise you a healthy Ok St and Iowa programs with the right recruiters to match Cael's name- well close as you could get, will chip away. I never thought Id think this but really Ok St needs Iowa and vice versa to run down the goliath. Then once in striking distance again its who can have a better tournament with their top dogs.
Let me know when OKState truly recruits over PSU at a need weight where they are all in. I am still not convinced this can happen even with DT given every possible resource to compete.

Let’s not forget that PSU was the absolute prime sleeping giant in wrestling prior to Sanderson. Its location geographically blows Iowa away, let alone it being centered perfectly in and around the best high school wrestling BY FAR.

For all the potential OKSTate and Iowa have they fall woefully behind in that regard. You put quite possibly the biggest name in American wrestling of ALL TIME and then gave him every resource imaginable for a fringe sport. It changed the sport. The few elites like Iowa were fighting and winning battles on the front lines with top of the line tanks, but that became obsolete when Sanderson was given an unlimited supply of drones that can simply overwhelm everyone else with sheer numbers and limited risk….

You’re painting with a pretty broad brush.

I’ll give you my opinion: For a guy to go to a school and be alright not being the man at his weight, he’s likely getting seriously compensated to not hit the portal.
I have zero inside info, but I will GUARANTEE there are non-starters at both psu and osu that are making more than some of our starters 🤷‍♂️
100% not even a question. You want a deep bench; it will cost you

What top recruits don't take Iowa serious? They all take the call and visits when offered? Almost every single top recruit visits Iowa. Top recruits would be dumb to turn down a visit/offer from an Iowa, PSU Okie st any of them and they all take the visits.

How sure are we that Brands has a buyout provision in his contract? Generally, buyouts exist for revenue sports as a way to retain hot commodity coaches. But I cannot imagine Iowa worrying too much about Brands threatening to leave for greener pastures.
Iowa has no worries of brands every leaving for greener pastures. There is no buyout in place. No wrestling schools make money

That is a “sort of”. It’s not like Mirasola was chopped liver. I am talking about NEED and not just want. To me Spencer Lee is the ONLY true NEED that PSU has gone 100% after and didn’t get. If I start seeing 1 or 2 of those every couple of years, THEN I can be willing to believe a team can truly compete with what PSU has become….

Many a PSU kid has not visited Iowa City. Most notable Aaron Brooks. I could name a lot. Also many are told they cant by Cael- Most notable RBY.

But for fun list PSU's projected starters and tell me which ones set foot in Iowa city or heck even listed Iowa top 3?

Cael is batting at a pretty high clip. The only notable ones are Spencer and Jax, now Ross. But as I said earlier I dont blame the kids if the options where Tom Ryan, Mark Manning, Tom Brands or John Smith.

Whole point was David Taylor & Jordan Burroughs are two different younger animals to deal with. MSU they would chip away. Cael will still be the hands down #1 recruiter with what he has built but chip away a kid here and there and soon enough you are looking Cael in the eyes again. OK state is at least waist level but Iowa is eyeballing shins nowadays.

I like you Corby but this post is disingenuous. Without a high end RTC commitment, DT wasn’t going to Iowa. JB is going to ask for the same. When the DT/Iowa rumor occurred, DT was the #1 wrestler on the planet and a near lock for the Olympics. Wasn’t really looking and neither was Iowa. Six weeks later, OSU.called him up two days after he had no future in freestyle. Timing is everything, and a lot of what StickKitty wrote is spot on. You can’t let Brands get to 2028 without a new contract or recruiting will fall off a cliff. Replace or renew by 2028 at the latest or suffer the consequences.
My first post about this a few days ago I said they would need 400-500k a year from donors for his salary.

It would also take a huge RTC commitment. I'm done talking about it .

There are no absolutes, but they have such a ridiculous percentage that it sure seems that way. For ANY team to be truly competitive that would have to change CONSIDERABLY.

Seriously, how many years has Cael been the head coach? How many times has he truly missed on a NEED weight?

Try to read AND comprehend. I said NEED in capital letters. Not just WANT. They already had Mirasola. It’s not like the weight class was desolate like it was when they went after Spencer.

My point is super simple, they do NOT miss when they have a true weight class in need. Even in the years where they don’t recruit a bunch they STILL have consistently landed that one or 2 guys that IMMEDIATELY fill in and pound it for all 4 years(now likely 5). To truly compete with them teams are going to have to STEAL it away from them sort of like what happened to Iowa with the Raneys.

When that happens, I will take notice…

Again, not a need. They had Lilledahl, Blaze, Ono, Nagao and Davis, with Blaze manning his actual weight class. A WANT? Absolutely. But, not a need.

I do love how you guys want me to be wrong so badly that you ignore very important parts to completely ignore the context…

So your plan would be to go in the fetal position, hold onto to the Brands, be happy with top 5 finishes, and not even try to compete with them? You must think you’re on the Minnesota, Michigan, or Nebraska board, because Gable didn’t build the dynasty just for coaching staffs in the future to have that mindset, and to the credit of the Brands they don’t have your mindset on this, because they’re winners in this sport. There time has just passed.

Yet again, a 100% twisting of my words. My defense of the Brands is because I DO believe they are doing ALL they can to try to beat an almost unbeatable team and I have yet to believe there was a better fit that could do better. I don’t believe Taylor was ever really going to work and am still not sure on JB without equivalent money men.

My argument has ALWAYS been against change simply for the sake of change. If some big money donors come out and say they would fund JB just like Richison AND they had 100% support from the Iowa Admins, I would put my loyalty to the Brands aside. Short of that, it is still change just for the sake of change…

Never mind the fact Cael has NEVER let his current roster stop him from going after someone he wants. We've seen it time and again and it's playing out with their current roster at multiple weights right now.

You have no idea if Cael considered Ross a NEED or a WANT. Thats an opinion of yours versus someone else. Your rebuttal isnt any more valid than the statement you disagreed with.

Youre schtick doesn't bother me, but it does waste my time trying to read through your incessant carnival barking how good PSU is. EVERYONE knows they are king right now. It doesn't take 8 paragraphs to explain it every day on this board because the members here want to see Iowa do better. Every person on this board knows your stance on PSUs success and most agree Id bet. You don't have to repeat it daily.

At this point I just assume you get paid every time you say the words Penn State.

I don’t disagree that with you, especially regarding winning titles. Like you’ve said, PSU is going to be exceptionally difficult to unseat without equivalent dollars. At the same time though, there’s a lack of excitement around the program that’s a combo of things. The Brands being closer to the end than the beginning of their tenure, the style of wrestling, the decommits from major recruits, Nebraska’s individual success, etc. It feels like the program needs a jolt to liven up the fans again

Someone said earlier, they missed big time on Spencer. And just that one crack in their dominance led to Iowa putting together all star lineups that not only competed with them but beat them and were winning championships, I say they won 2 while most would say one and scratch COVID year. Truly believe we were on the same trajectory before the fallout of Raneys, Bo and Melvin.

Wow! Great job, Mikey!

I do think JB would be a great hire. He’s got an amazing wrestling pedigree, seems smart, and unlike DT (from what I’ve seen on TV), is very personable/engaging. I think top kids would want to wrestle for him and I think he’d be great at recruiting.

Yes, I said that about Lee. THEN it worked for Iowa because PSU was winning with 4-5 rockstars and some actual “holes” in the lineup. Since then, they have evolved.

PSU has now put out a 10 AA lineup and may set the scoring record for the 3rd season straight. Nicking one top guy from them simply isn’t enough now. They are that deep and are set up so well in every possible category that they have essentially built a system to big to fail.

Something outside of their control will have to change for them to drop off any time soon. PSU is now the old school Yankees or Red Wings. They have all the money, tradition and RESULTS to get nearly anyone they want.

With DT doing what he is doing now at OkState, is there even enough elite talent out there for a 3rd team to truly and consistently compete???

Sorry but you are wrong. That one nick did set things in motion. Desanto, Eiermann, Murin, Kem(another PSU loss/miss), Assad, Warnerov, Cass. If remembering right, Bull and Kaleb were already there. Anyhoo, don't say one nick cant change the trajectory because it has and will.

You are an attorney, right? Of all people you should know how much the actual words and context matter, right?
Except you just choose to define words as you see fit and then try to debate your personal semantics. As you've now set it up, the situation you asked for literally CAN'T happen, since Penn State has no "needs" as you've chosen to arbitrarily define them.

Lmfao. Not what was done at all. I said fricking need weight. A NEED weight would be a spot where they can’t score substantial AA type points. They have had plenty over the years. Spencer Lee was a prime example.

The REASON that matters is because this ENTIRE argument is about being competitive with them. To do so you are going to have to steal top guys AWAY from them. NOT just get a good guy that they really don’t need anyway.

I am not saying Ross wasn’t a big get for OkState. I am simply pointing out that STILL keeps them 50 or so points behind.

Context MATTERS…

So, context matters, right? Then, you surly understand that tournament strategy would probably have to include multiple teams taking out the top dogs to have a chance to win, in the short to medium term. That means get better, NOT give up, as you clearly prefer to see.

Yes

Iowa has no worries of brands every leaving for greener pastures. There is no buyout in place. No wrestling schools make money

There are two kinds of buyouts.

Termination without cause by school. School pays coach.

Termination by coach for another collegiate coaching job. Coach pays school.

Both are in Brands’ contract.

If Iowa fires him before the 2028-2029 season, they owe him $500K. This was $750K prior to 6/30/26 and down from $1.2M earlier in the deal.

If Brands leaves Iowa for another job between now and 6/30/28 he owes Iowa $250K. If he leaves for another job after that date, he owes Iowa nothing. This is down from $800K earlier in the deal.

You can read the contract for yourself here.
