There are parts of this that are completely reasonable.

But if you really believe this, the coaching staff will never be questioned, as its always the players fault for not being successful.
Of course coaching failures happen and should be ‘questioned’ to say the least when they do, ie the Holtz donut defense, the spurrier alternating qbs, whammy, Shula, etc; ‘coaching’ that does not put the players in a position to win. But the implication was that ‘coaching’ was at fault exclusively and that the team lost the three games they lost so far because the coaches did not have them ‘ready’, which is false. They were put in position to win two of those games.

Certainly, those would have been nice to have. However, it seemed clear to me that Sellers has had to get his groove back in live action after dealing with the Shula offense and that hopefully seems to be coming around now.

A little over a week ago, the sea of BOTs on this board like Lurker123 were calling for Sellers to be benched, transfer, etc.

A week later it's dawning on those same knuckleheads that we have one of the best offenses in the SEC and Sellers stats are better than Arch Manning at the current moment.

Hopefully, we'll see continuation some continuation on Saturday. If we find a way to beat UT on the heels of that big UF win, I think it would be safe to say past sins have been reconciled.
What's lost is lost forever. What has already been lost is sufficient to reclassify the level of success of this season. This will only be appreciated in retrospect by the analytical.

92.

And it can go the other way as well; can’t remember the season but under spurrier we were ranked no 6 at the halfway point and goose egged the rest of the games.
Is that the season when we won at Chapel Hill, reached #6, and then lost to Vandy 29-0 or something?

If it would otherwise mean to hold them accountable for execution errors, ie Sellers in Miss st game, corners in the Kentucky game, Arch in the Florida game yesterday, Gunner in the Auburn game yesterday then yes, they’re off the hook. We don’t go praising Beamer or Briles when Sellers threads the eye of a needle, do we; breaks off a 75 yard run? When Fuller breaks a tackle and pushes a scrum for a first down? They know what to do, they are coached to win and they CAN win, but they have to do it.
Here's my way of looking at it, and I believe it prevails in business as I experienced it over a 39-year career. When stuff messes up, ownership (or upper management) goes to where the buck stops at the operational level. If people are screwing up systematically, you go to the bosses. That's the pressure point and you don't deviate from it. They are both employed and paid to take that heat, preempt snafus, and correct them quickly when they occur - or else. Never take your foot off the managers' throats, only modulate the pressure according to specific circumstances.

Yes it was and that Vandy game was the starting point of the slide. First game that spurrier decided to have qbs alternate possessions, which was a disaster. Brilliant offensive strategist but consistently demonstrated a lack of understanding and awareness in a couple of other areas.

Bobby Johnson outcoached the HBC. Steve was known for laying a egg or two at UF as well.

SOS was a great coach, of course. Not too many coaches in the history of the game changed how it was played. He is one of the few.

But when you look back, it's kind of surprising with all their talent that he only won a single title at UF.

And they were not undefeated that year. But did avenge their lone loss for the title.

Agree but that's our situation and the situation of most every team -- including those in the SEC. Even those exclusive 3 years in the of the program could been viewed through this lens. Half-empty/full.

Still believe this is one of the best staffs we've ever had that the numbers back that up. When you tune in, you know there's likely going to be a very entertaining game in front of you. We haven't always had that luxury.

I'm only concerned with ONE team, which is the one with two home SEC losses already and a staff that didn't even think to call a timeout to set a defense when Kentucky was going for two (which won them the game). So, no.

Those UF teams were so ridiculously stacked, it's kind of hard to believe.
There were always a few teams that matched up with UF. FSU had some incredible teams with exceptional speed as well as UTen in some of those seasons (Peyton). Those were the BCS days where there were only 2 teams that played for the title.
I used to love it when Bowden or Phat Phil beat Steve.
There were some QBs who would not play for Steve because of the way he treated his QBs.

Sorry UF won - I despise them. Remember our 3 "permanent opponents" that we play yearly from now on are Georgia, Florida, Kentucky. Need I say more. They are all looking strong(I know UGA did lose). Only solution is for us to improve.

No. It was an enjoyable occasion, but it didn't restore anything already squandered.
So the takeaway is that the wish list is one of complaints only? Because if you didn't have us winning at UF coming into the season (which is logical given our history) then....

I didn't have us losing to Miss. State and Kentucky at home, either, and particularly in the manner each game played out.

I didn't either. IMO, the UF game makes up for one of those losses. In fact, I would rather have lost the OT affair to a good UK and beat UF like we did than the reverse. Much better optics at this point.

No optics are going to get a three-loss Carolina team any farther than a middling bowl, and that's before we lose another one - or two.

We are a team with middling player talent. Find an SEC coach consistently outpeforming (more than just a season or two) with the player talent they have. Doesn't exist. Computer analysis killed that awhile back.

Some teams are better than others. There are no invulnerable teams in the current SEC. We have underperformed too much for no farther along in the season we are.

Not really. Remember about this time last year when you thought Vandy's coach was something special? Winless in the SEC this season including a loss to ARK last weekend.

UK has beaten LSU, OK, A&M and us in OT. They are having a good season and recruit about like us.

Love to see some examples of the consistent overachievers as the Sharpe Ratio sits at over 91% in terms of talent to success.

Beamer was in that exact same position early in his career and won SEC Coach of the Year.

Vandy Coach last year when their stars aligned.

Flavor of the Month.

Everything waxes and wanes around talent and timing (unless you have a very sub-par coaching staff)

We can't wax enough this year to overcome the wane. If I'm proven incorrect, you won't have to chase me down. No one has ever had to chase me down.

Sure we can. If we get to 7 wins this season, the staff sits only 3 wins behind Spurrier (pre-bowl game) over a 6-year stretch.

He also has 8 wins against Top 25 opponents - including several Top 10 opponents -- with 6 games to go. Spurrier had 9 at the end of Season 6.

And I don't believe anyone could argue that this staff has hadn't a more difficult setup (NIL) / schedule (2 Top 5) than Steve had messing around in the old SEC East.

And I don't recall people hating on Spurrier along the way like this staff has endured.

6 seasons is quite a stretch King --alot of games. Don't toss the baby out with the bathwater just yet.

I believe you yourself have commented before that the social media pundits and the squeakiest of the wheels on this board do not represent the vast majority of the fanbase, at this point anyway. They’re similar in percentage to the flat earth believers.

A recap of folks blamed for our failure to satisfactorily (what is that anyway; I don’t think they know really) produce in the recent past:
Tanner
Muschamp
Jake Bentley (coach’s son; they hates it)
Board of Trustees
OC du jour
DC du jour
Beamer (coach’s son, nepo baby)

Board fans:
Opener against UNC several years back; take a 20-9 lead into the 4th quarter and give up back to back clock eating 95 yard touchdown drives to lose the game. On the last play of the game Bentley is sacked against a TWO MAN rush, injured, and out for most of the season. Who do the board fans blame for the loss? Why Bentley of course.

Kentucky 2010; lead 28-10 at the half and give up 21 unanswered in the second half, including the winning touchdown with 1:15 remaining on a 3rd and 23. Spurrier blows the clock management forcing an unsuccessful Hail Mary as time expires. Who do the board fans blame for the loss? You guessed it, Garcia.

I don’t put a lot of stock in social media and board fans; they can hates me too, that’s fine. I personally barring a complete collapse am against recycling a staff and head coach AGAIN for the 100th time and feel that at this juncture of the developing college football landscape I’d just as soon keep Beamer. I truly believe letting him go would be a mistake.

If you want to project a favorable comparison between Beamer and Spurrier, I'll be glad to observe the outcome over 11 seasons. I take it you're suggesting that Beamer could be here for as long as Spurrier (11 years) and that his winning percentage could be be equal to or better that Spurrier's. I'll try to hang on long enough to observe the outcome.

How is 5/6 seasons not a favorable comparison? The average length of stay of a college coach is 4 years.

Were you as critical of Spurrier as you are Beamer during that period?

I'd like to see what this staff could do with Top 5/10 recruiting classes. Unfortunately, that's a thing of the past.

-----------

Under head coach Shane Beamer, the South Carolina Gamecocks finished his first five seasons (2021–2025) with an average winning margin of 19.42 points and an average losing margin of 15.07 points [7.21].

Looking strictly at Steve Spurrier's first five seasons (2005–2009) before his 2010 SEC East Championship run, the South Carolina Gamecocks had an average winning margin of 14.83 points and an average losing margin of 13.89 points

Spurrier started with a rightly-earned warchest of credibility from which Beamer just as rightly did not benefit. Spurrier gave us the best four consecutive years we've ever had. Beamer will have to be here long enough to meet or exceed that. Until and unless he endures AND achieves to that level, he will never measure up to Spurrier.

To be fair, if UK didn't convert the two two point plays, no one would be talking about how good they are this year. They have two really unlikely wins against OU and aTM and 3 wins against cupcakes.

Setting Spurrier's best four year stretch (something that had never and has never happened in gamecock football history) as the standard for judging a head coach seems like a recipe for eternal disappointment. You also have to keep in mind, outside of the four (three really) great seasons, Spurrier was really only a win a season or so better than the historical average for SC football.

If we had taken a timeout there, a coaching decision, then the tenor of this whole conversation might be different.

Or maybe not. A timeout doesn't guarantee a stop.

I don't think Beamer is the next Saban, but I'm not sure he's as bad as some think. He is what he is, a cheerleader and front man who likes being at SC. If he can get good assts. I think he will be as good as any head coach could be at SC.
