...... but you could argue at 42 he's (Briles) more qualified to run a top program (he's been OC at multiple big programs though not always successful) than Shane was at 43, when we poached him from the OU staff coaching TE's and never waa a coordinator.

That comparison isn't even close.

But if we're going to talk about the resume of our next HC, I really dont want to use a lifetime position coach who's career was built on nepotism as the measuring stick.

Jmo, but I think we can do better.

As an interim he could still lead the offense or be very involved. As a full time head coach say next year, things get more complicated but staff could be retained. This is all hypothetical obviously. I'm not insinuating Briles is the next Saban or our next HC but you could argue at 42 he's more qualified to run a top program (he's been OC at multiple big programs though not always successful) than Shane was at 43, when we poached him from the OU staff coaching TE's and never waa a coordinator.
It just seems impossible at SC given the circumstances (buyout/transition price tag.) I personally think head coaches jobs in this era are overrated. They are fund raisers, cheerleaders and maybe a small hand in the system. That's more Shane than Briles to me.

If I was a good OC, I'd leave the HC pressure to someone else and get paid top dollar for something I'm good at.

It would be typical of SC to lose at home after a big win on the road. This is a test of leadership for Beamer, et al to keep the team motivated and hungry going into the UTjr game.

Big money is HC. $2M a year is nice. $8M+ is the pinnacle. If it didn't work out, he'd be owed lottery money. Why do you think so many top coordinators become head coaches? I guarantee Briles has HC aspirations.

I think an OC could get to $4-5mil at SC now that everyone has figured out that paying a HC a boatload of money for a boatload of years is a terrible idea. Clemson is the perfect example. Their coordinators on both sides should have gotten $6mil and Dabo should have gotten a 6-7 year deal for $8mil. Instead, what a disaster.

Spurrier loved SC so much he walked out on the team mid season and took a job back at UF shortly thereafter. He wasn't tired of working in the world of college football, he was tired of working at SC football.

Building a statue of a coach who quit on the team mid season and never won a championship would be too cringe for even SC.
As I said, he is a UF grad and thus is his first collegiate love. I know that some fans hold quitting at mid-season against him and always will. I just don't and won't. I blame Ray Tanner for talking him out of retiring after the 2014 season. He did win a championship, the SEC East, something that we fly a banner for at Williams-Brice. Regardless, I am glad we at least named an indoor practice facility after him and Jeri. Some fans probably seeth at that. As Spurrier would say, "It is what it is".

Flying a banner for winning a division is pathetic. Winning the division is not a championship of any kind, it is what you do (did) in order to play for a championship. Bama, Tennessee, LSU, UGA, UF and Auburn don't have banners for division championships in their stadiums.

Naming the indoor facility was probably done because he and Jeri made a large donation for it. Spurrier won a share of the ACC championship at Duke and they don't have anything named for him. I wonder if he loves Duke as much as he loves SC? He had more success at Duke than SC if you consider championships. His success at Duke is also what got him the UF job.

Some SC fans blame Tanner for everything bad. Whether or not Tanner talked Spurrier into staying for the 2015 season, Spurrier should have stuck it out until the end of the season. Spurrier is a quitter who hurt the SC football program more than he helped it in my opinion.

Evidently the powers at USC feel differently about winning the SEC East Division championship. I'm fine too with the flying of the banner. It's not like we have a lot to brag on regarding our football history. I agree with the powers at USC and say take what we can get.

No credible sources say that the Spurriers made any direct financial contribution to the facility. Tanner said the Spurriers were "humbled by the attention" and they told the Board Of Trustees that naming the facility after them was unnecessary.

We will just have to agree to disagree regarding whether Spurrier was a "plus" for South Carolina. I'm glad he came and accomplished what he did. Evidently those on the Board Of Trustees feel the same.

Yes, we will agree to disagree. I will say, since Spurrier left, SC football has a 64-66 record. I have a hard time seeing how things are a lot better for his being here.

It's true. They are good. I'm not suggesting that we WILL beat UT if we have truly progressed as a team. But losing to them opens the door right back up for all the negativity, particularly if it's with defensive busts, poor throws and WR drops.
yeah- we better have some well-timed blitzes on defense (help the secondary as much as possible) and catch easy catches. No other way to say it....but our WR/TE receiving has been very bad.

We screwed that up hiring a failed SEC Head Coach to replace him and then followed that up with a position coach, whom the jury is still out on. Regardless how Shane Beamer does, I don't believe anyone will argue when I say that we have yet to replace Spurrier with the same caliber of Head Coach that he was. I don't think we have even replaced Spurrier with a Head Coach of the caliber of Frank Beamer, much less Steve Spurrier.

That is the record once other coaches took over.

His record, including a nice run towards the end, paint a different picture.

Maybe its safe to say his impact didn't last beyond his own tenure.

Beamer had a better record than Spurrier after first 4 seasons.

If the team has a good 2nd half of this season, then it could have simply been that Mike Shula was a terrible OC in Year 5.

The problem is Shane hasn't improved after year 4 (Spurrier didn't lose 8 straight SEC games either between years 5 and 6-they continued to improve). Maybe this season will turn out good by season's end but let's see if he touches what Spurrier did from years 6 to 9. Spurrier won the East in 2010 (year 6) and followed that with 3 consecutive 11 wins seasons and finished #4 in AP after 2013 season. Sure, I can't predict the future but that looks unrealistic based on the inconsistent product Shane puts on the field every year-since we're comparing to Spurrier.

Fallacy of your argument that Spurrier didn’t do SQUAT other than the much discussed no sense in rehashing generational in-state talent that fell in his lap (that indeed elevated a mediocre qb to legend status) and secondly, Spurrier didn’t have to deal with NIL, which is a total different ballgame.

Unrealistic is putting it mildly. The comparison of Beamer to Spurrier is laughable, and will only become more so as time goes on.

So Shane could have gone 11-2 three straight years with those teams? Hogwash. Shane helped recruit a lot of them, Spurrier coached them up-mainly offense at least. He was drawing up the plays. If Shane was a football coach brainchild he wouldn't been coaching TE's 20+ years into his coaching career. Last I checked we have a top 16 NIL roster this year- without a lot to show for it at this point. No need to trash our most successful coach to desperately defend an average one.

4 Years is alot of napkin math Lurker. That's not a fluke. And he won SEC Coach of the Year during that time as well

Spurrier has been very open about the fact that he couldn't do what he did in that stretch today. He had a Top 5 recruiting class. We'll never have a Top 12 with the NIL around.

You're twisting my words. I said Shane wouldn't have gone 11-2 three straight seasons with that group like Spurrier. I didn't say anything about Spurrier coaching today's team.

Shane had the crutch of going into a recruits home and selling the idea of playing for hall of fame coach Steve Spurrier.
And Shane gets credit but didn't personally recruit many of those big time gets. They were recruited by other coaches. He gets credit for assigning the right coaches though. Devin Taylor was an axample of a guy he personally recruited and signed. Solid get. I won't deny Shane can recruit.

Stating facts is not ‘trashing’ my friend. Of course beams couldn’t coach like spurrier; you can count the ones that could on one hand.

Your nil numbers; I guess you can find numbers anywhere but a quick check shows us at #15 in the sec and not in the top 25 nationally. <thenilstandard.com>

The Athletic had us #8 in the SEC and #16 in the country. That was published recently and was considered reputable. Facts are facts. Shane hasn't proven himself to be a consistent winner in year 6 in the SEC. Losing 8 straight SEC games will get you fired at most SEC schools in year 5/6. In the meantime, we still have fans that think he deserves a lifetime contract because he's a nice guy, wants to be here and needs more time to learn the head coaching trade.

Gotcha. Who knows? Those teams were loaded and that's the point.
Beamer hasn't had a roster even in the ballpark of this.
https://gamecocksonline.com/sports/football/roster/season/2011/
But also consider by then we had built a proven winner. Helps big time with recruiting. We'd played in an SEC championship and won 11 games the following year. Spurrier at the helm was good press too. We were a tough team to face in the SEC. And beating upstate team every year who was usually pretty highly ranked. I get that NIL changes dynamic but success helps too. We were never close to UGA's recent success but they don't spend as much in NIL as some top SEC schools because some very good players just want to play for a winning program.

I wouldn't buy into Kirby's crap and those NIL estimates.

Kirby has been outspoken about the NIL craziness and good for him.

Meanwhile - Here's UGA's class rankings over the past four years:

#2
#1
#2
#7

Each loaded with 4 and 5-star players so he's full it of because those guys aren't taking millions less to play for him. No way.

The trick is that the estimates aren't including National Deals and UGA has a boatload of them.
