...... but you could argue at 42 he's (Briles) more qualified to run a top program (he's been OC at multiple big programs though not always successful) than Shane was at 43, when we poached him from the OU staff coaching TE's and never waa a coordinator.
Valid point. I know the HC these days typically serves as CEO and usually always has separate coordinators vs when Spurrier was in charge. But not to say they can't run things like that if they prefer.Who was Spurrier's OC? Thanks in advance.![]()
It just seems impossible at SC given the circumstances (buyout/transition price tag.) I personally think head coaches jobs in this era are overrated. They are fund raisers, cheerleaders and maybe a small hand in the system. That's more Shane than Briles to me.As an interim he could still lead the offense or be very involved. As a full time head coach say next year, things get more complicated but staff could be retained. This is all hypothetical obviously. I'm not insinuating Briles is the next Saban or our next HC but you could argue at 42 he's more qualified to run a top program (he's been OC at multiple big programs though not always successful) than Shane was at 43, when we poached him from the OU staff coaching TE's and never waa a coordinator.
Big money is HC. $2M a year is nice. $8M+ is the pinnacle. If it didn't work out, he'd be owed lottery money. Why do you think so many top coordinators become head coaches? I guarantee Briles has HC aspirations. It just seems impossible at SC given the circumstances (buyout/transition price tag.) I personally think head coaches jobs in this era are overrated. If I was a good OC, I'd leave the HC pressure to someone else and get paid top dollar for something I'm good at.
I think an OC could get to $4-5mil at SC now that everyone has figured out that paying a HC a boatload of money for a boatload of years is a terrible idea. Clemson is the perfect example. Their coordinators on both sides should have gotten $6mil and Dabo should have gotten a 6-7 year deal for $8mil. Instead, what a disaster.Big money is HC. $2M a year is nice. $8M+ is the pinnacle. It would be typical of SC to lose at home after a big win on the road. This is a test of leadership for Beamer, et al to keep the team motivated and hungry going into the UTjr game.
As I said, he is a UF grad and thus is his first collegiate love. I know that some fans hold quitting at mid-season against him and always will. I just don't and won't. I blame Ray Tanner for talking him out of retiring after the 2014 season. He did win a championship, the SEC East, something that we fly a banner for at Williams-Brice. Regardless, I am glad we at least named an indoor practice facility after him and Jeri. Some fans probably seeth at that. As Spurrier would say, "It is what it is".Spurrier loved SC so much he walked out on the team mid season and took a job back at UF shortly thereafter. He wasn't tired of working in the world of college football, he was tired of working at SC football.
Building a statue of a coach who quit on the team mid season and never won a championship would be too cringe for even SC.
Shane better have a succession plan in place because Briles could be gone after the season.
Flying a banner for winning a division is pathetic. Winning the division is not a championship of any kind, it is what you do (did) in order to play for a championship. Bama, Tennessee, LSU, UGA, UF and Auburn don't have banners for division championships in their stadiums. As I said, he is a UF grad and thus is his first collegiate love. Evidently the powers at USC feel differently about winning the SEC East Division championship. I'm fine too with the flying of the banner. It's not like we have a lot to brag on regarding our football history. I agree with the powers at USC and say take what we can get.Flying a banner for winning a division is pathetic. Naming the indoor facility was probably done because he and Jeri made a large donation for it. Spurrier won a share of the ACC championship at Duke and they don't have anything named for him. I wonder if he loves Duke as much as he loves SC? He had more success at Duke than SC if you consider championships. His success at Duke is also what got him the UF job.
Some SC fans blame Tanner for everything bad. Whether or not Tanner talked Spurrier into staying for the 2015 season, Spurrier should have stuck it out until the end of the season. Spurrier is a quitter who hurt the SC football program more than he helped it in my opinion.

No credible sources say that the Spurriers made any direct financial contribution to the facility. Tanner said the Spurriers were "humbled by the attention" and they told the Board Of Trustees that naming the facility after them was unnecessary.
We will just have to agree to disagree regarding whether Spurrier was a "plus" for South Carolina. I'm glad he came and accomplished what he did. Evidently those on the Board Of Trustees feel the same.
yeah- we better have some well-timed blitzes on defense (help the secondary as much as possible) and catch easy catches. No other way to say it....but our WR/TE receiving has been very bad. It's true. They are good. I'm not suggesting that we WILL beat UT if we have truly progressed as a team. But losing to them opens the door right back up for all the negativity, particularly if it's with defensive busts, poor throws and WR drops.
We screwed that up hiring a failed SEC Head Coach to replace him and then followed that up with a position coach, whom the jury is still out on. Regardless how Shane Beamer does, I don't believe anyone will argue when I say that we have yet to replace Spurrier with the same caliber of Head Coach that he was. I don't think we have even replaced Spurrier with a Head Coach of the caliber of Frank Beamer, much less Steve Spurrier.Yes, we will agree to disagree. I will say, since Spurrier left, SC football has a 64-66 record. I have a hard time seeing how things are a lot better for his being here.

The problem is Shane hasn't improved after year 4 (Spurrier didn't lose 8 straight SEC games either between years 5 and 6-they continued to improve). Maybe this season will turn out good by season's end but let's see if he touches what Spurrier did from years 6 to 9. Spurrier won the East in 2010 (year 6) and followed that with 3 consecutive 11 wins seasons and finished #4 in AP after 2013 season. Sure, I can't predict the future but that looks unrealistic based on the inconsistent product Shane puts on the field every year-since we're comparing to Spurrier.Beamer had a better record than Spurrier after first 4 seasons.
If the team has a good 2nd half of this season, then it could have simply been that Mike Shula was a terrible OC in Year 5.
Fallacy of your argument that Spurrier didn’t do SQUAT other than the much discussed no sense in rehashing generational in-state talent that fell in his lap (that indeed elevated a mediocre qb to legend status) and secondly, Spurrier didn’t have to deal with NIL, which is a total different ballgame. The problem is Shane hasn't improved after year 4 (Spurrier didn't lose 8 straight SEC games either between years 5 and 6-they continued to improve).
