I'm the opposite. Hollywood is so bad now, I'd love for them to take a proven IP and just not 17 it up. Yes, there are things that you have to change when you are going from a book to a movie, but you don't need to have a female voice a lion. How is that even going to work?

You have a guaranteed money maker if you just stick to the original story to the extent you can. You have a built in audience if you don't alienate them. I don't know if it's just that they don't like the target audience, don't like the original author or its message, or what. I could get the script writers wanting to make a major change so that they can take more credit for the writing, but why would you mess with casting as a film maker? You're already taking other people's material. How you execute it is what matters. Nobody gave Peter Jackson less credit because he followed the LOTR books. Why not just execute and be happy being recognized a great film maker and printing money?

ETA: I would agree on Barbie. I thought it was great for what it was. Lots of people in hollywood would have leaned into the girl power/girl boss messaging hard enough to ruin the movie. She made a good movie first, and the messaging actually fit into it and did not distract from the story.
I haven't read the source material (Screwtape and Mere Christianity, I have & got a lot out of) and I also haven't examined one up close, but I'm pretty sure lions can be female?

If you asked me 25 years ago if there would be female doctors and male school teachers, I would have laughed at you so hard you cried.
I mean, that was unheard of....right?!

But damn, we have both now.
It's crazy.
A woman is allowed to prescribe medication and even perform surgery!
And a man is allowed to teach a child!

Since this world is so upside down now, I guess a female voicing a fictional lion is no longer a completely bonkers concept.

^ this entire post is satirical. please read it with ** in mind because the doctor and teacher comments are not what I actually think.
Sarcasterisks are pulling double duty here for satire too.

Question:

Is Iowa THAT backwards that 25 years ago you had these thoughts? I could see it being sensible if you had said 75, maybe 60, but 25? Interesting.

Greta's career peaked to me when she starred alongside Russell Brand in that terrible Arthur reboot.

But I fully acknowledge that my take is subjective.
It's just kind of funny to me with Barbie that this rich woman in Hollywood directs a major summer blockbuster, and makes a fortune complaining about how unfair things are for all women. She's what all Tik Tok moms strive to be one day.

Fact:

And you play your role in the thread so well every time. We can count on you for contrarian hot takes.
What is my hot take here?
- Based on the trailer, it seems like a well done movie to me. Thats not a hot take.
- I think this thread is going the way of many SPS movie threads. Thats not a hot take.
- I am looking forward to the movie because I read the series multiple times as a kid. Thats not a hot take.

Holy hell, the thread is full of reactionary outrage and extreme assumptions, but my post is a hot take?

Do you not know what a 'hot take' is? It seems like you dont know how to use that term.

Lions can be female. Aslan cannot without gutting the source material. So either you're going to have a female voice for a male lion or you're going to gut the source material. And for what? You have a built in audience of people that will go watch your movie and are going to be inclined to like it. If you don't like the source material, why spend time making a movie with it? If you want to do it for the money, great. Do it in a way that will make the most money. Why pay for the rights to the source material if you don't think it is good enough to use and gutting it is going to alienate the built in audience?

Like I get a person being into a book and also that it's an allegory many find great meaning in - at the same time it's a work of fiction. It's ok if someone re-imagines it; it's not holy writ. It's also perfectly ok not to want to watch it.

I dunno, this is kind of reminding me of how occasionally a few people get their drawers in a wad over a black santa claus.

Typical Hollywood stupidity. Intentionally alienate your target audience, and then they'll blame the target audience for not watching.

I'm more offended as a stock holder. If you want to spend money as a private company hating on source material, great. But if you spend public company money on the rights to something like Narnia, LOTR, Star Wars, Wheel of Time, etc., just take advantage of a built in audience. Don't spend that money and then **** on the source material because you don't like the audience or because you want to push a particular message. Disney set billions of dollars on fire because even though the entire business purpose of the star wars purchase was that they needed boy centered material to balance out the heavy princess offerings, they had people in charge that just couldn't stand it being just more appealing to boys and men.

I was responding to the 'how is that even going to work?' comment.
It was funny to me, like he couldnt even fathom how a woman could possibly voice a lion in a fictional children's story.

I chose to run with that question and satirically respond by saying I was similarly shocked that women can be doctors and men can be teachers.
I mean...HOW IS THAT EVEN GOING TO WORK?!?!

To be clear, women voiced male characters and men voices female characters 25 years ago. This also isnt new.
None of it is new, so the 'how is that even going to work?' comment was fnny.

The satire in my response was clearly missed on some here. Or it sucked.

This line of argument I find lazy. Leftist ideologues change things. Then, if you point out the pointless change, they start in with, "Why do you care so much?" If you care enough to change it, we care enough to notice it and call it out.

Imagine making a new Black Panther movie starring Ellen Degeneres as T'challa. Then say, "Why do you care so much? It's just a work of fiction. It can be re-imagined." It's just ideology ham-fistedly jammed into cultural touchstones. I'm not even mad about it. It's just cringe and eye-roll inducing at this point.

Male school teacher?!?!...but how does that even work? I mean...they are male!

^ again, satire. use ** when reading, if that helps.

A female voicing a male lion is going to sound just weird.
Um...a lion speaking is the actual weird thing here. Its an animal that cant actually speak...yet it does. Its a fictional animal character- it can sound however the director wants it to sound.

The only reason why it may sound weird to some is because they expect the lion to speak with a general European accent influenced by a Northern Irish accent(Liam Neeson's influence).
Of course, Aslan with a general European accent influenced by a Northern Irish accent would also sound weird to all the people who had seen prior versions where Aslan spoke with an English accent.

The point here is that Aslan has sounded different through the decades of video and audio recordings.

Aslan sounding different in 2026 shouldnt be surprising...since Aslan has sounded different many times.

Buddy, you and some others here care WAAAAY too much when it comes to characters changing in movie reboots or movie adaptations.

So Aslan is a male lion and voiced by a female...ok, move the 17 on. If that is really so triggering that you cant even imagine 'how is that even going to work?', that is more on you than the movie or director.

It could be a great movie. It could suck. Neither of us know...the movie isnt out yet.
I doubt my opinion of the movie will come down to how Aslan sounds though.

I would have loved to hear Liam Neeson as Aslan, simply because like his voice as the character, in a similar way to why so many people get warm and fuzzy over Morgan Freeman's voice being God in movies and documentary narration.
But someone else voicing Aslan isnt going to keep me from watching the movie.

I haven't watched the trailer. I keep hoping that maybe they'll make Streep's voice more masculine through some audio magic, letting her act the part but with a digitally manipulated version of her voice so that it's male? No idea. But the idea of an Aslan without a deep, obviously authoritative and masculine voice is completely contrary to the expressed intent of the author.

Ellen Degeneres as T'challa would be an abomination because it would be Ellen Degeneres as...well, anything other than an ADD riddled fish. That is the only thing she should ever be cast for.

But pulling back from Ellen specifically, yeah I understand your comparison.
With that said...I would say that casting a white woman in a role that is for a black/African character is obviously dumb, but thats because the character requires a black/African person for the character's background and story to make sense.
Aslan voiced by a woman is fundamentally different, since Aslan on screen is the same in the story and the story still makes sense. Aslan having a softer voice doesnt change the story.

And to continue with your example- Black Panther could be remade with T'challa as a woman, and the story would make sense. Like I am pretty sure the entire story could be the same and it would make perfect sense.

Fact:

You mad, bro. Contrarian takes are hot takes, especially when done for the sole purpose of being contrarian. To not understand why casting a female voice for a strong male character is way out of touch. Would you find it intriguing or great casting if when they eventually do a movie about Obama, they cast a white guy/gal? Don’t bother answering as it’s a rhetorical question. We don’t need another hot take from you today.

This is very well said.

However, I'm holding judgment on the movie (hopefully movies) until I see it (them)....hence the title of the thread.
