well according to all knowing google, the zoo receives federal money. That money comes from taxes...
Can you be more specific? Are you claiming they receive federal reimbursement for the zoo discounts because I don't see any evidence of that anywhere. If so, please show your work. Thanks

All you had to do was keep reading. Riverbanks Zoo doesn't receive federal funding, so looks like google was wrong? They receive some local gov't funding via local property taxes, grants, and contributions since the zoo operates as a public-private partnership, but once again nothing federal and nothing being "taken out of peoples pockets."
So I read up on this and this is not paid for by the taxpayers, i.e., the state does not reimburse the zoo. The zoo opts in "voluntarily" and they absorb the cost. The discount is limited and covers one cardholder's household(up to 4 people)during regular daytime hours and excludes special events. An extra visitor adds little cost to a zoo with spare capacity and the visitors may buy food, merchandise or memberships. It's no different than giving a discount to seniors, students, military and children, so this is much ado about nothing.

You can relax now.

Reminds of the time several years ago when @NJPSU started a thread about a woman who couldn't afford meat at the end of the month because her benefits ran out. By the end of the article we learned that she is a single mother of a single mother who lives with her (take that in for a moment....), both of which did not work because working would reduce their "benefits."

lmfao....

isn't there a Houston zoo?.....wait for it

The Houston Zoo
  • Location: 6200 Hermann Park Drive, Houston, TX 77030 (in Hermann Park within the Houston Museum District)
  • Size & Scope: Spans 55 acres and houses over 6,000 animals across nearly 600 species.
Sigh. Nobody was talking about the existence of a zoo. We were talking about whether the reduced entry fees were reimbursed by the state or the federal government. That's when you weighed in with this vague nugget.

Ok not to prolong this relatively senseless debate about zoos...the post I responded to said Houston zoo...I googled and the response was Houston zoo took federal money. Now you posted that was vague, so I posted about a specific zoo named the Houston zoo that gets federal money. You still than that's vague ok...so enough about that.

I personally don't really care if the Houston zoo, or any zoo for that matter, gives a discount for people on EBT. That's up to them, I know I take advantage of military or senior citizen discounts when they're offered.

As I understood, the zoo was not accepting the EBT card as payment, they just got a discount. BFD

So with a war in Iran, high inflation, an election, we're debating about zoos and EBT cards???

I hear you. Would love to find ways to put more into better education (even vocational) and then mental health as ways to “teach a man to fish” type deal (and mental health I just think is an issue). Cycles of poverty is really hard to break. Don’t disagree it’s an issue.

I just struggle seeing people get angry about situations that aren’t even confirmed to exist. Like, there’s a pretty good chance the entire tweet or whatever was literally created to make people angry. To gain engagement on their post/page. Divide people further.

Another example I just saw of something just to divide and make people angry that happened a while back:
View attachment 1484132

People on X/Threads/BlueSky etc twist and make things up so frequently just to get engagement, and those sites prop those posts up because that is how they make money too. Then you have the administration doing the same and using influencers to tell their lies. If that doesn’t piss you off, I’ll never understand that. Would piss me off if Biden’s admin were feeding straight lies to influencers to enrage the left too.
Here’s an easy way to see how I think. I have a few economists that I really enjoy. MF is one because he has an ability to make things digestible.

Milton Friedman put it better than anyone. There are four ways to spend money. Your money on yourself: you care about price and quality. Your money on others: you care about price. Others' money on yourself: you care about quality. Others' money on others: you care about nothing.

Government is the fourth box. By design. When you understand this you should and will question every decision and budget and dollar spent.

Because I understand that applying unearned purchasing power to a fixed supply of goods creates inflation. Many of you and your friends don’t and love to call me dumb and other names but these are facts. They just don’t align with the religion.

Precisely. And furthermore, what do they know about anything? They don’t create, they’re talkers not doers. They have no idea what they’re doing yet there’s an entire party based around taking money from contributors to disburse it to non-contributors by some third party government that has no clue how to solve anything. We literally reward government programs for failing, the more they fail the more money the get. Hello CA homeless and high speed rail, hello rural internet, etc... How is this not basic understanding?

I understand all that, and I agree that it is easy to sign up to spend others money. Would love to live in a utopia where everything is handled and everyone gets every need taken care of, etc (although now I'm thinking of Wall-E and now not so much ha). So agree it is easy to just say, yes give them this, give them that. I hear you.

I think to explain our perspective, or at least my own. Where I at least push back is that it often feels so selective. Maybe you only came across as genuinely angry, as text is hard, but you seemed genuinely pissed (which I'll note is the intention of the tweet). And it was at something unverified that doesn't even really make sense (that the zoo would be paid for by SNAP). And that it is much more likely a program by the zoo to allow underprivileged kids a pathway to visit. To get more people in the gate. Zoo's always have charitable foundations, educational and school programs, etc. Doing something like that to allow more kids (who actually need healthy and safe places to be I'll add) a chance to come visit for parents who want to do the right things but are not in a good financial place, feels like the exact time and place for a charitable foundation to do its thing. And then on the flip side, people on the right seem to hand wave away spending other peoples money when it is something they support (war, destruction, pardoning rich cronies, building monuments to Donald Trump). I respect that at least initially you were very against the war in Iran (at least that is my recollection). So I want to call that out as it is easy on here to paint too broad a brush.

And so I push back when I see someone get genuinely angry about something that in the absolute worst interpretation is helping poor kids visit the zoo, but then don't see that same anger when some rich donor is pardoned, including the restitution actually due victims. Or when billions are spent on a war no one can actually explain the reasons for without winking or ignoring previous statements.

I think having discussions about where we spend our money, how we best help people up when they're down, etc. All great discussions. I have often found that when discussing things like gun control or welfare, the right often says things like mental health is the reason, etc...but then is uninterested in putting money towards that either. So it feels like my way or the highway, discussion over. I'm sure the right has some similar feelings about those of us on the left (though to be fair to both right and left, the rage algorithms make us feel like the right are majority like ole scrubbster on here a disengenuous troll, and the left are all blue haired screaming purity testing freaks)

You’re missing my point. Forget the zoo stuff. We are paying more in taxes than ever in history - how are your roads? How are your schools? How’s the infrastructure? How safe is your community and the surrounding communities? Is it commiserate to the amount of money spent? You talk about war but completely disregard that 60% of our budget is spent on entitlement. War is temporary, these insane programs aren’t. I don’t wanna hear about anger - read the responses to my posts. I get the worst name calling and nonsense from your side imaginable. So maybe I do come in hot, but with good reason. Giving the federal government more power and money is the absolute stupidest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say, why would you support that?

But I do get all that.

And before you were called any names, etc here were your posts (after FP was yelling this was fraud)
Imagine you have time to go to the zoo but not find a job. Lol. wtf are we even doing?
Wym. We all know that serious societies don’t require or encourage people to work. We want them getting 1/2 off the zoo admission so they can really waste their time and our money.
And these were directly about the zoo stuff. Without making sure what FP was calling fraud at all was or that funds were going towards it all.

Those are obviously tongue in cheek. The point remains. We are debating the fundamentals. The zoo thing is ancillary.

Got you.

Well the main fundamental I'm passionate about that I've been arguing is that rage algorithms are the devil, and are meant to divide us, and that this was yet again a great example of it. I actually think it is a much greater issue that our spending (in that if the issue didn't exist and we could actually compromise and discuss we might be able to curtail some of the spending). I jump in threads like these because I hope to open eyes on both sides that sometimes the things we are letting ourselves get upset about and rage against are made to do that.

I thought Trump mentioning LA and SD the other day was another one, just on the other side of the spectrum. And I called it out as such (and saw other left leaners do the same, but not all).

There were two tweets, one was about Riverbanks zoo and the other was about the Houston zoo but the details are the same - I researched both. Taxpayers aren't bearing the cost as these are voluntary programs they opt into voluntarily, the reduced fees are paid out of pocket, not with EBT cards and they aren't reimbursed by state or federal tax dollars. So not sure why he added they they receive federal funds without specifying what they were for because it didn't apply to reduced entry fees, that's for certain.

Trump mentions LA. Your boys are collecting 100’s of thousands of American citizens information bc they dare to vote R. Apparently 640,000 people were trying to overturn the election lol. This is my point. They’re all POS lying crooks. You upset about this? I know how you feel about rounding up or investigating huge groups of people (like illegals) so is this ok?

Whistleblower materials and subpoena returns show Smith’s office and the Biden-era DOJ obtained extensive personal data on at least 639,000 Republican donors, voters, and supporters.

Selective outrage.

I reluctantly got involved with this discussion yesterday when the rage revolved around reduced zoo entry fees and that's all I was interested in addressing. But how can we know if all SNAP recipients deserve those benefits without knowing their personal circumstances? I know in your mind, they're all a bunch of lazy leeches but they do have to meet strict income eligibility requirements and now they have to meet strict work mandates to remain eligible, so calling it a problem is subjective IMO. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean they don't need it so I'll leave those decisions up to those charged with monitoring and enforcing the eligibility rules.

not to take the zoo debate in a different direction, but that's what i'm going to do.

Watched a debate on CNBC this morning, the guest, leans left, made the statement that spending is our proble,. He brought up spending as a % of GDP. In 2000 when we actually had a surplus. He pointed out that spending has actually increased over that time. Of course, when I looked it up revenue has also decreased as a % of GDP.

Dude. It’s 40 million people. It’s over 15% of the entire population. It’s being abused and it’s obvious. Just call it what it is. It’s not racist. There’s a **** load of whites in the mountains doing the same thing and it’s wrong.

You really don't get my point at all, have a good one.

Was calling out the left, you know the OTHER SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM. But carry on.
