What changed for the iowa run game against Washington?

Washington’s defense is ranked a respectable #50ish but we ran on them like they were uni type. Unexpected to say the least after repeated horrible performances. Did we change anything (such as blocking scheme) or wa did screwup schematically?

one thing i noticed was that moulton ran a bit differently frequently attacking holes emerging laterally instead of north south before turning upfield…i’m no expert but it looked unusual to me

What have I been saying the problem was?

That would still be the answer, as to what got fixed

Just one game for my perspective against Washington but they looked like the worst coached defense I have ever seen. They lacked any kind of physicality. They were charmin soft. They looked like they had no clue where they were supposed to be.

I’ve watched big ten football for a long time. First Penn State. The Nebraska. Then Maryland and Rutgers. Then the west coast teams. all of them struggled because they could not adjust to the physicality of big ten football.

I posted about the same question and my thought was perhaps Wash does something different in their run stop scheme that enabled our blocking patters to work or our coaches changed a bit the angles our blockers take and some slightly different scheme stuff. It was great to watch.

Ineresting thoughts, all of you.

does anybody have any perspectives to offer re: Dotzler? He seems to be characterized here as the "weak link," & was just wondering if that is true, is he improving?

Something sure as Heck changed this week, and it was not entirely the QB or defense.

We seem to start slow and I think we are getting into more of a groove. I also think they could not ignore our passing game so they could not completely sell out against the run. Heck brings a bit more to the game....i know it is just one game but a nite game on the road in a tough place to play and he did not flinch. The play calling was much more diverse this game.

Mostly I'd say we weren't playing against five or six future NFL players in the defensive front seven like we were against Ohio State. Our inability to run against Iowa State I attribute to growing pains and Kirk running a very vanilla blocking scheme.
Iowa State/Rogers' defensive scheme he brought over from Washington State, also had a lot to do with it.

It forces everything into a phone booth and doesn't allow well for zone/stretch plays, especially if you're unfamiliar with it (i.e. facing it for the first time in the second week of the season).

The issue was our pass game couldn't open up the run the way we wanted it to.

Explain West Virginia rushing for 300 yards and Utah over 200 then?

Amazing how the run game opened the run vs Washington. Who would've thunk it? 🤔

Probably best not to overthink this. Our running game always seems to improve, but it looks that much more accelerated after you come off of playing Ohio State and Michigan.

We weren't playing Michigan and Ohio State, and Washington was awful at tackling. We could've ran for 400 yards if we didn't need to pass some just for practice. Pleasantly surprised as I thought it'd be more like a 23-20 game one way or the other. Took care of that in the first half.
Per KF "level of competition " along with the o-line playing together in another game.

Per TL, the desire is to increase the run frequency to 60/40.

That can only mean more frequent consecutive runs.

As I said for weeks, lack of consecutive runs was the problem with the run game.

So, it looks like they're getting it figured out, as actually employing consecutive runs was a success vs Washington

Couldn't agree more......... ;)
I think it’s hilarious that the guy who calls other people names (pedophile, dumb, etc.), who is always arguing with people, who constantly derails threads, who criticizes people for being “bad fans”, and who belittles anyone who disagrees or has a different opinion than him, thinks others should act more “adult”. 🤡

Mainly they're a soft, poorly coached D.

Otherwise, willingness to stretch the field out.

the answer per this thread seems to be simply that iowa changed nothing schematically, we blew up in seattle simply because wa has a extremely subpar DL. so the take away after 6 games is that iowa generated 325 average yards rushing against the horrible DLs of uni, niu, wa and a pathetic 60 average rushing yards against isu, mi, osu. the contrast between the pair of 3-game buckets is insane. there is no trend either game to game. it's literally feast or famine.

for the record, after 6 games each average rushing yards given up by the elite michigan DL per game is identical to the average rushing yards given up by minnesota at 94 yards. will be very interesting to see what happens in the next game. wonder if we return to the same 60 yards on ground performance again.

thx, it is always good to have empircal info as opposed to opinions (the latter of which ANYBODY can provide).

I do not disagree with you, but didn't Washington average giving up 110 yardss a game rushing and we got 260 on them? that would seem a bit counter to the empirical information.

Playbook expanded with Heck. Yes their d-line was not good but they had no idea in many cases on what was coming. When they started leaning toward a run stop, Heck had the answer with some wide open routes. Good ball handling, decisive throws, under control, not locking into one WR.
I think one of the best plays of the gam was after a great slant pass was dropped by RVZ, Heck wen right back to him on a deck throw....great throw...great catch. Other teams have film on us with Heck at the helm for a full game. If Heck plays, this opens up the running game potential in my opinion.

agree. on the flip side osu and mi are also in the same ballpark rushing defense but throttled us while isu is far worse and still did a number. i honestly do not claim to have any idea what's wrong (or right for that matter) with us...

TL said in the presser today that he could have called more runs to help out the running game vs Michigan and OSU.

And that he needs to get better at learning the sweet spot of his O-line.

So, sounds like good news ahead for the running game.
