People in the Northeast (NJ, NY, New England) seem to be overly pessimistic on their in-state public schools and too positive on out-of-state schools, relative to what the facts show.

Rutgers needs to put more effort into marketing in New York. Columbia advertises on the Long Island Rail Road, why not Rutgers which outperforms the SUNY schools on nearly every metric. This would reach 200,000 daily commuters mostly from high income families with college bound kids. Get Rutgers in front of people for whom Rutgers is a logical option but have historically overlooked Rutgers.

Another attribute Rutgers should market is the breadth of the course offering. My guess is it is #1 in the Northeast. A lot of kids enter college undecided on major and Rutgers’ broad range of majors makeit easier for them to discover what they find most interesting.

I think RU offers something like 50+ languages while schools like WVU and Cuse cancel programs, as just one example.

Maryland is borderline and probably would elicit some intense arguments from Marylanders to say the least lol. They can go either Northeast or Mid-Atlantic depending on who you ask and what part of the state you ask them in.
Mid-Atlantic (pretty much statewide) and not NE. Cecil Co. next to DE might have some who would consider being in the NE. Technically Cecil is within the Philly CMSA (and somewhere around midway in Cecil along 95 you get to about equidistant driving distance between Baltimore and Philly).

Man some guys who’s parents didn’t work hard or weren’t smart enough to send their kid to private school have a serious chip on their shoulder about those that were. Tough way to live. Oooof

I'm generally with you on this type stuff but here I'll break. This is absolutely one area where Rutgers needs to cull the herd so to speak.

If we're only a handful of schools offering say Chinese, Arabic a lot of others there's major value

agree but 50+ needs to be reduced and those resources allocated elsewhere. I'm a big liberal arts believer, society needs the arts and all that it brings however, 50+ is a lot with the tech, changing dynamics to education etc etc.

I actually believe that all schools should start multi language requirements in 1st grade akin to Europe's approach. Every one of my cousins over there learned English, French, German and then had to choose a 4th

I'm guessing a number, I am not sure of the actual but a lot of it hinges it other major requirements. Eg, Latin American Studies you take Spanish and Portuguese, Middle Eastern Studies you need one of Arabic, Hebrew or Farsi, etc. And then they have any language a NJ HS does which is probably the highest number right there.

They have to start earlier for sure...but that would require a big national lift. Unfortunately even in NJ I have heard of some schools moving away from that, they think AI can translate everything, good luck with that lol

No need to guess. Rutgers lists it all on its website. Rutgers has 13 majors related to foreign languages. Many languages such as Polish are offered as classes but not as majors.

Wikipedia as a source?
Yes, is there a problem? It's sourced from books and an admissions officer from Yale.

The term was coined in 1985 by Yale University admissions officer Richard Moll, who published Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities. That initial list included eight universities and nine runners-up.[1] In 2001, college guide authors Howard Greene and Matthew Greene, released their own book, The Public Ivies: The Great State Colleges and Universities,[3] which included 30 schools.

Do you like Grokipedia better, when it says the same exact thing with the same sources?

I was wondering why you questioned Wikipedia, that's all.
Wikipedia has faults in certain areas, and I'm aware of the attacks on Wikipedia. In some areas, including tech and basic factual items, that are sourced with backup, Wikipedia is fine.

No Headline for the Gannet newspapers for #14, but we get this:

"Those rapes accounted for more than one-third of the 361 total campus rapes reported across the Garden State’s 29 four-year colleges during the same time period."

Screenshot 2026-10-08 at 11-46-30 Asbury Park Press NJ Jersey Shore & New Jersey News.png

Rutgers and Rowan make of 1/3 of "reported" rapes. Buried in the salacious headline:

"With the highest enrollment of any four-year college in the Garden State at 52,000 students, Rutgers data also shows it has one of the lowest rates of reported rapes, with 0.33 reported per 1,000 students."

Blah blah blah (and I knew the meat wouldn’t match the sizzle of the headline).

But more importantly, do we like the banner with the Rutgers up or down?

Generally speaking, the people that present and do the tour are very good. Just need to solve that bus tour.

There is no hate that is enough for NJ media treatment of RU.

It is no wonder so many parents look past Rutgers as not a viable option when most people see the headlines and don't dig in. Rutgers wastes money on football. Rutgers will pay the football coaches $28M to be fired. Rutgers leads the state in rapes (when it is "reported rapes" and Rutgers has the lowest # per students).

They can say what they want, Rutgers offers a lot of bang for your buck. Less debt when you graduate for the student and especially the parents. Higher chance in the metro area of being hired by a Rutgers Alum with great starting pay. The Privates have great reputations but do they offer as much as a great State University like Rutgers does?

The way the media in this state treats RU is utterly sickening. Can't wait for AI to all but eradicate the print journalism industry.

AI would def give kooky stats and information but I guess at least it wouldn't always be anti-RU. It's sad because there's definitely topics worth writing about that need to be fleshed out. SA is a serious issue on college campuses, and they could do a real article on it but instead go for clickbait.
