People in the Northeast (NJ, NY, New England) seem to be overly pessimistic on their in-state public schools and too positive on out-of-state schools, relative to what the facts show.
Rutgers needs to put more effort into marketing in New York. Columbia advertises on the Long Island Rail Road, why not Rutgers which outperforms the SUNY schools on nearly every metric. This would reach 200,000 daily commuters mostly from high income families with college bound kids. Get Rutgers in front of people for whom Rutgers is a logical option but have historically overlooked Rutgers.
Another attribute Rutgers should market is the breadth of the course offering. My guess is it is #1 in the Northeast. A lot of kids enter college undecided on major and Rutgers’ broad range of majors makeit easier for them to discover what they find most interesting.
I think RU offers something like 50+ languages while schools like WVU and Cuse cancel programs, as just one example.
