Just stop. We are at rock bottom of nothing. Coaching and support salaries top 1/3 in the B1G
NIL. Top half of the B1G
Talent in our recruiting footprint. Maybe 4? Give you UCLA and USC 50/50 bs Baltimore area.
It’s 18 million dollars to get rid of him. It’s pocket change in grand scheme.
stop having a loser mentality. That’s what he wants. It’s what he’s convinced you guys we are. It’s pathetic.
and no, we aren’t OSU or Oregon and never will be. But we could be a constant top half of the Big winning 6,7,8 games a year.

You think a couple more games are going to matter? What do you think plugging an interim from our coaching staff is going to do right now? Nothing. This season is a lost cause. It’s worth managing the situation behind the scenes as strategically as possible to get the cost down.

It’s not the Coach!! Coaching ain’t our problem. We don’t have the players because we don’t have the $$$$$$$$.

Football is simple. The bigger, stronger, taller, faster team wins. That’s it! That’s all!
End of story!

its jimmies and joes!

It does get down to the money at some point, but the blame doesn't fall on the players or NIL. Rutgers would have never rehired Schiano if they spent the money on their programs like successful B1G programs would have. They would have hired a competent coaching staff instead.

We lost to UMASS and BC. Nothing to do with money.

I wish I could setup an auto response to posts who claim this disgraceful season is attributed to NIL / Money.

Rutgers beat FCS Howard and opened the season losing to UMass and BC. How good are those two FBS teams?

UMass is 4-1 and has beaten Rutgers (37-21), FCS Sacred Heart (37-10), FCS Stonehill (36-14), and (first year FBS) Sacramento State (36-6) while losing to 3-3 Eastern Michigan (who beat Sacramento State and FCS Lindenwood while losing to San Jose State [27-21], Michigan State [35-7], and Wisconsin [54-10]).

Boston College is 2-3 and has beaten Rutgers (28-21) and FCS Maine (22-16).

What is terrifying about this information is that the Rutgers scores are not dissimilar to the scores of the wins against FCS competition. Every team remaining on Rutgers schedule has at least 1 win against FBS competition. Maryland has had the weakest results thus far beating FCS Hampton and 2-3 FBS UConn (beating FCS Lafayette and 1-3 FBS Southern Miss [whose win came against FBS Alcorn State). The deeper you dive into RU's results and their opponents results, the worse it is. This is completely unacceptable and inexcusable. The idea that Schiano should be retained after this season is a foolish one.

A lot of you guys don't get it; there is no getting the cost down. His contract already includes a reduction where he gets paid 75% of the remaining contract if he's fired.

Why is he going give more back on top of that? The only scenario that comes into play is with a lump sum payout which I don't believe Rutgers is going to offer.

I’m just calling it as I see it. I still believe Kelly wants him to get to 6-6 and I bet he’s not canned until that possibility becomes zero (we’re getting there). At 6-6 she can fill seats next season. It’s massively cheaper to fire him after next season and would’ve set the program up much better for success if he just didn’t lose the damn UMass and BC games and got to an uninspiring 5-7 or 6-6. You guys keep saying it’s “small time” thinking this way but we flat out are not in a financial situation where hiring right now instead projects us to a better position than that outcome would’ve. But alas - he didn’t. And now he 100% has to go before next season because financially we will not sell tickets next year if he returns - rendering the cost of his buyout a wash.

It’s fine to hate him as a coach - I’m just saying the reality that for our AD, the money situation is in fact a big factor. And to Cali’s nuclear plan suggestion - it does not resolve the issue that we will not sell tickets next season so it puts us seemingly at a financial stalemate. Indeed Kelly is in a very bad position here.

The cost still increases because you give the interim head coach a bump in salary / stipend to handle the additional head coaching duties. Caliknight mentioned in a thread that it is best to simply dismiss someone once the decision to fire them has been made. I agree with that nearly 100% of the time, but I don't in this scenario because the only thing it accomplishes is to satisfy disgruntled people like me. We will spend more money that we supposedly don't have. The only reason to pull the trigger now in my opinion is if you believe the coach named as the interim coach may be worth promoting to permanent head coach next season.

Getting to 6-6 would be the worst thing that could happen if we want the program to move forward in my opinion. Not only does that mean this team goes on a 5-2 run to end the season, but the realization that a better start would mean the team should have been 8-4 and potentially ranked by the CFP Committee as #23 8-4 Iowa (losses to Iowa State, #1 Indiana, #5 Oregon, and #16 USC) was last season. That likely results in Schiano being here for at least 2 more seasons unless next season is a complete disaster as this one has been. You would have to believe that "One Season Schiano" is the real deal despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Finishing 5-2 against Maryland (2-3, 0-2), Northwestern (3-1, 1-1), Michigan (3-2, 0-2), Wisconsin (4-1, 2-0), Nebraska (5-0, 2-0), Penn State (3-2, 0-2), and Michigan State (2-3, -0-2). Our opponents have combined for a 3-9 B1G record, which is hardly murderer's row. Next year's schedule is not that much different as we trade UMass for Akron, Wisconsin for Ohio State, Penn State for Washington, and USC for UCLA.

6-6 won’t save him. Losing 2 of 3 OOC games torpedoed 6-6 being acceptable.

It’s a cost benefit exercise at this point, how much do you stand to lose by firing him or not firing him. Rutgers isn’t broke like some would like every line to believe. It’s using a fear tactic to paralyze decision making.

If they are intent on bringing in Brian Kelly they will pull the trigger sooner.

Imagine a high school teacher who has taught for 19 years whom everyone knows is mediocre at best and is teaching the same way he or she did 19 years ago. Would you want your kid in his class? The players are not getting a fair shake if mediocrity is the best we can do, and Greg is far below mediocrity.
Not a direct analogy. These athletes are deciding to come here, and everyone on the roster is getting paid at least something.

You could also go the other route. Greg does help turn young men into successful adults. He has helped many people create great lives, but not necessarily great football teams.

Greg helped get us out of the dark ages, but the NIL era of football has changed everything.

The university needs to prioritize what is going to bring in the most donations and revenue.

No - in the spirit of WAB (its principles) - if Greg actually closed out the season on a 5-2 run he would probably survive and give Kelly cover to postpone which is my theory on why she hasn’t pulled the plug. The point is, we’re not going to go 5-2 down the stretch and it’s still not a given Greg will even last long enough to have an opportunity to do this. We still have zero FCS wins.

But even a 5-10% chance of that outcome might make it worth it to her to wait another week or so depending on outcomes. if we lose to Maryland, he then needs to go 5-1 the rest of the way and the odds fall even lower. And so on. I’m coming at this from a math perspective. Everyone on here is approaching this with the emotion of wanting Greg gone right now, but for Zinn, she wants the opportunity to make her hire at the most ideal time possible. She only gets one crack at this. It might be worth that small 5-10% chance to her to wait a week or so.

The financial stalemate is bad for both parties. Forcing Greg to oversee a stripped down bare bones version of a program that loses anyway isn’t good for him either. It’s an aggressive move but Schiano’s contract and most importantly results are forcing such considerations.

It’s not without risk though because if he were to call our bluff - we’re still stuck with the expense of running the program with basically no game revenue next season. That’s unfortunately the problem with this plan. But look - if the number crunch suggests it would still save us considerable money vs the full buy out it might be worth it. Especially if Kelly isn’t thrilled with the anticipated pool of candidates.

Yeah - the money in an interim change is a wash. Will cost the same either way.

If she feels like she has a play that could potentially bring the cost down by a couple million dollars - she’s going to act disciplined here. That’s all I’m trying to say. The long term impact to RU in waiting a few weeks or whatever to make a move rounds to zero. It’s worth the wait to make sure she fully understands her options.

I truly believe you are mistaken. I wouldn't expect any charity from someone's whose days are numbered, which is what they are giving because of the increased responsibilities the program has assigned them, More tasks and responsibily == more pay.

You are also being given opportunity. Norries Wilson wasn't given a bump in pay when he took over for Ash. If you have any interim coach getting a new contract after being given interim status, I'd love to see it. Never heard of it.

Schiano is the only thing between us and the abyss!
We are close to the abyss though because of him. Greg admittedly didnt prepare his team for UMass, 💩 the bed against them, and couldnt coach his way out of a paper bag against the worst team in D1 last year. Also couldnt win against the worst ACC team from last year. He had ample money to upgrade this team to take care of those two teams but didn't. Overnspent, out recruited and outcoached.

Think there is a difference, Wilson was a suspension fill-in for Flood. I think Nunzio got a little extra when he was named the interim after Ash was fired. Total cost will depend on how many games the interim coaches.

Well, what about this interview? I understand it’s highly unlikely because everyone says why would you give up the money? But what if he’s just come to the conclusion that either he gets fired and disgraced or they can agree to take some sort of a smaller buyout and let him step away or retire however, you wanna word it. Then the school is not on the hook for the full 18 million and we still get a chance to replace him and he walks away like he chose it.
His legacy here is important to him, and I think the last thing that he wants is to be fired. So while it probably not going to happen, theirs a chance that he comes to that realization it makes up some reason why he’s decided to leave. And that might be why they keep them till the end.
