The cost still increases because you give the interim head coach a bump in salary / stipend to handle the additional head coaching duties. Caliknight mentioned in a thread that it is best to simply dismiss someone once the decision to fire them has been made. I agree with that nearly 100% of the time, but I don't in this scenario because the only thing it accomplishes is to satisfy disgruntled people like me. We will spend more money that we supposedly don't have. The only reason to pull the trigger now in my opinion is if you believe the coach named as the interim coach may be worth promoting to permanent head coach next season.
Getting to 6-6 would be the worst thing that could happen if we want the program to move forward in my opinion. Not only does that mean this team goes on a 5-2 run to end the season, but the realization that a better start would mean the team should have been 8-4 and potentially ranked by the CFP Committee as #23 8-4 Iowa (losses to Iowa State, #1 Indiana, #5 Oregon, and #16 USC) was last season. That likely results in Schiano being here for at least 2 more seasons unless next season is a complete disaster as this one has been. You would have to believe that "One Season Schiano" is the real deal despite all the evidence to the contrary.
Finishing 5-2 against Maryland (2-3, 0-2), Northwestern (3-1, 1-1), Michigan (3-2, 0-2), Wisconsin (4-1, 2-0), Nebraska (5-0, 2-0), Penn State (3-2, 0-2), and Michigan State (2-3, -0-2). Our opponents have combined for a 3-9 B1G record, which is hardly murderer's row. Next year's schedule is not that much different as we trade UMass for Akron, Wisconsin for Ohio State, Penn State for Washington, and USC for UCLA.
