Not sure how much blame I should lay at his feet.

What's your emoji's opinion?
Nah. Hank isn't afraid of contact. I will say today was the first time he looked truly rattled by the pressure from an opposing defense, so hopefully that doesn't become PTSD for him.

If that doesn't remain a thing, then no he's not the next Spencer Petras.

Hank can make a play with his feet. Petras had a much better arm. Petras would have been a lot better under TL with the receivers they have now. He was a square peg they tried to fit in a round hole.

Deacon Hill, Cade and Spencer Petras also had to deal with Brian Ferentz. Hank is better than all of them but I’d take every starter that has taken significant snaps, as the named starter going into a season, in Kirk’s tenure over Hank (except for maybe Jake Christensen).

10000% overthinks, checks down quickly while not getting the ball out quick enough, over throws deep balls on the regular, happy feet in a less than perfect pocket and practice hall of famer.

You are blaming Hank for what right after the Mich game? I dont understand if you are bagging on Hank after that game. The Petras feeling is Petras did above avg in 2020 once he got a couple of OLinemen back from injury, the hawks were playing about as well as any most teams the final 6 games of 2020. 2021, he played well, won at ISU, helped win the Penn STate and a bunch of other games. But in 2021 and 2022 it became apparent our OLine play was getting really poor so opposing coaches took away the run and smashed Petras. But he still won a bunch of games at QB. YEs, it looked like he got gun shy dropping back.

Hank does seem to hang in there and take a hit to deliver the ball. Against OSU, it looked like hank was delivering balls early and hurrying his passes after the early sack fumble. He was a bit overwhelmed against OSU. Right now I think fans like yourself should be talking about our poor run game which is hurting our QBs

I feel like Hank at his best would be another Jake Rudock.

I know that doesn't necessarily inspire great confidence in Iowa fans, but hey..............that's what Kirk tells us is what they intentionally chose to have to work with, and that we have to deal with it. 🫠

Petras 2.0…need to go to the portal for next season. The more concerning thing is the run game.
If Hank and Heck are above avg qbs the rest of the season and with Bessinger (sp?) in the wings and our 3rd stringer I dont think the hawks need to spend money on a QB, unless there is a really very good proven QB who wants to play here. And dont laugh because a lot of players would really love to play for Kirk.

But you are wholly correct the poor run game agains the three tougher teams the hawks have played is very troubling which is why I started the thread about using a jumbo blocking package on and off. I made my reasons for it which is more power blocking and a wider box which makes the defense spread out more and if you can hit holes in that wider LOScrimmage then maybe it can help. And you can still pass out of this formation for sure

Hank has a lot of winning to do to catch Petras
Yep, Petras was the main qb that won 24 out of 33 games in his 3 years as the main starter, he came in at halftime of that NEbby game and threw it well and played well. He wasnt great, sometimes above average, mostly average but was under duress much of his time in the pocket.

Lets wait until Friday, hopefull he is physically and mentally ready to go. Personally I think the OL needs more "fixing" than our qb situation.
Pass blocking is really good play to play but not much push and punch with run blocking now.

Hank Brown QBR this year = 131.0
Spencer Petras career at Iowa =114.7. His best year was 119.0

QBR does not account for the value brings as a runner or in Petra’s’ case lack of value.

it’s embarrassing that anyone’s trying to compare the two

Petras may have been “better” than Deacon but he is still by a landslide my least favorite Iowa QB of the last 20 years.

Cade took that title from him in short order for me but yes, they both were absolutely awful. I feel bad for Deacon because realistically, they never thought he would play.

In defense of Petras and Hill and Cade, they had the worst offensive coordinator in modern big ten football history. But they are still behind Hank. And Hank is miles behind every other Iowa qb of the last 20 years.
