Most of today’s higher prices are Biden-era inflation

The guy with 1 year didn't have the vaccine he pushed to be developed. Autopen did.
The guy with 1 year also didn't have to deal with the much more highly contagious Delta and Omicron mutations that evaded vaccine protections. And let's not forget who fared worse when these new strains emerged.

trump is making the same mistake Biden did. People in the US don't have any idea of the data you just provided. But they do know that gas is higher, food is higher, interest on their credit cards/mortgage rates are higher..

They know that tariffs have caused higher prices, and the war with Iran, which they've been told will be over in about 40 times, are actions taken but Trump. And he promised in his campaign to reduce inflation and prices.

He's telling people how great things are, and in a macro sense, he might be right. But most people live in a micro world...do I have enough money to make it from the beginning of the month to the end.

In effect, Trump is telling them they do, but they know they don't. And they blame trump policies.

If republicans end up holding the house and Senate, democrats should be the ones questioning election integrity.
Both sides do a horrible job speaking to the voters. Some of that is because neither side has a plan to lower prices. That might be because there are no solutions that don't require sacrifice.

I personally believe some of inflation started when we gave money away during covid but most of it was when Biden spent ~ $3.5 trillion over and above normal. Then everybody from port workers, UAW, Teamsters, UPS drivers, Nurses, etc extracted huge increases in compensation. That tricked down to most other fields. Even fast food workers went from ~ $12/hr to $19/hr. It's great when everybody makes more money but it drives prices higher across the board. None of these people are going to take a pay cut so the higher prices are baked in for good. I think it's ironic that people were upset that our government allowed production to move offshore but now they're upset with tariffs that could help save good paying jobs. They all want higher wages but they don't want higher prices.

I would advise political leaders to be honest with the public. Tell them there are no easy answers but we're going to create a Simpson Bowles type task forces to make recommendations for housing and healthcare. Congress might not accept their recommendations but at least it shows an effort.

“Biden wasn't a good president”

Who was the last good POTUS?
bad question...every president, in fact every human being, could be described as good. That doesn't mean that every thing they do is good. A lot of the folks on the right blast Obama for the ACA. In fact doing something about healthcare costs and getting more Americans insured was great. Now, it hasn't turned out exactly as planned because of some errors in design, some actions by courts, and actions by trump. But it was still a worthwhile endeavor...but that doesn't make Obama a bad president.

Same could be said about all of them. I believe Clinton was a good president...started as an idealogue, but was able to change to meet the reality of a Republican Congress. I just wouldn't want my daughter to work for him.

I just disagree Ned.

Inflation is much better under this admin. I think most people realize it. Inflation on groceries and food is as low as it’s going to get without a recession and deflation (deflation bad). Food inflation is currently under the 2 % goal I believe.

Energy is expensive, but Iran doesn’t have a nuke and things are trending in our direction bigly.
Food at home inflation is 2.9% which is a slight tick up because of oil/diesel prices. I think it would only be 2% if oil/diesel got resolved. But that doesn't make prices lower. It just stops them from going up as fast.

I have no idea why you think the Iran is trending in our direction bigly.

You are making more excuses for autopen - who allowed millions to enter the country unvetted, which included no checking for covid.
I’m not making any excuses. I’m laying out facts - I think Biden did a **** job, that doesn’t mean I think he’s to blame for all the issues that arose from the pandemic.

I don't think it's either correct or fair to blame everything on Biden. But, it's not erroneous to blame a large portion of today's prices on the higher inflations during the Biden years. Prices didn't go back to pre Biden years when he left office and go up again the day Trump took office.

At the same time it's correct and fair to point out that some of the higher inflation and continuing upward movement in prices is the result of Trump's policies.
Yes prices are high due to inflation hikes that occurred under Biden’s administration. No one is saying otherwise. I’m explaining WHY inflation went up but apparently I’m talking to the clouds.
Got it, so anytime inflation happens, just chalk it up to something else and it’s not inflation in your books, even though it sort of is because prices went up and stayed up.

You’re train of thought is clear as mud.
It’s important to understand WHY things happen. You not recognizing the importance of that is not lost on me.

But we were promised they would and that's how we ended up with Trump 2. Instead of doing anything at all about high prices, he immediately exacerbated them with his Liberation Day tariff war and made them worse with his poorly planned excursion in the Middle East. Have you placed any of the blame on his broken promises?
I did, on line 7 I talked about the worthless tariffs and how it’s increased prices.
In a different thread I talked about how it’s a joke politicians are always saying they will do xyz when elected but never actually do anything. All politicians should be fired after a year or less if they can’t come through on their promises or at least have a fool proof plan in places showing their work.
I have no problem calling out both parties for sucking.

I understand what you're saying. But some economists could make a pretty good case that all of the additional spending during Biden's term - even after it was clear that we had bridged the worst of COVID - certainly didn't help tame inflation. Now was all the inflation caused by Biden himself. Likely not...there were a heck of a lot of intelligent people, least of which was the FED chair, told us that the high inflation was "transitory", and were advising Biden. They were wrong. Why not just admit the error and devise plans to make things better? We waste a heck of a lot of time debating who's at fault and not enough finding ways forward.
What additional spending? The stimmy he signed on March 2021? Yeah, I think that was poorly conceived/rolled out, but I know people were suffering and due to it we will likely never see any sort of public assistance of its magnitude should we ever have another global pandemic/issue causing economics to collapse.

He passed the IRA AFTER inflation had peaked, so you can't really say that caused inflation to rise.

How was it clear that we had bridged the worst of COVID? When Biden entered office 3200 people were dying per day and there was no vaccine distribution plan. A case could be made that the money spent was necessary at the time, it's only in hindsight that we see it differently. Even Trump thought it was necessary because in his last full month in office, he tried to increase his last stimulus from $600 per person to $2000.

So what is the President of the United States worried about this morning? That Fox & Friends didn't cover his rallies.

They have military capability, just not as much as they had. Tankers are still being struck and missiles continue to be fired.

I think it's ridiculous when people say Iran is winning the war. The fact is they've taken huge hits to both their military and their economy. That doesn't mean the IRGC is going to roll over. They'll continue to put every available resource into their direct attacks and also attacks by their proxies. They're not going to roll over and give up power because their people are suffereing.

Democrats are not the answer to rising costs....... "Don't Get Fooled Again."

https://www.realclearenergy.org/articles/2026/09/29/its_the_economy_stupid__again_1208940.html

The American people want affordable, reliable energy at the pump and the plug. Both are within reach. We're sitting on hundreds of years of natural gas that can deliver falling electricity prices if the political will is there. Sadly, we don't habitually vote for the policies that would get us there — we want the benefits of abundance without voting for the means.

I read the RealClearPolitics average, and I don't like what I'm seeing: Democrats are headed toward a protest-vote win. Good for them. But is it good for you and yours?

This crop of Democrats is among the least prepared in memory to bring down the cost of energy. They have "solutions" — a wholesale transformation of the energy economy — but affordability born of abundance isn't their path. Scarcity and higher prices are the necessary outcome of green mandates applied to everything. My honest read on a Democrat-controlled Congress: nothing improves on affordability unless it comes wrapped in a subsidy.

Republicans are the abundance party. Democrats are the scarcity party. Republicans fixate on juicing supply, Democrats on regulating demand. The former brings more supply and lower costs; the latter constrains supply and drives prices up.

A Democratic Congress won't move the price of crude — that's set globally. But it can slow the permitting, leasing, and infrastructure decisions that determine whether domestic supply keeps expanding over the next 5 years. That's the real stakes of this election.

Blaming Biden for worldwide inflation caused by COVID's shutting down the global economy, and then starting it back up after supply chain had already been impacted,
Blue states pushed for extended shutdowns much more than the red states.
Blue States/teacher's unions pushed for schools to remain closed for as long as they were.
Democrats insisted on enhanced unemployment pay that was higher than what many people were earning by actually working.
Biden pushed through an additional $3.5 trillion of spending that hit AFTER covid had pretty much run it's course.

Apparently, one of the things their "military" or whatever you want to call it, is capable of accomplishing is requiring the US to have to send ~30% of its active air craft carrier fleet to their region. No clue what the carrier groups would be doing otherwise, or if it's out of the ordinary to have this many active carrier groups at at sea, but clearly the IRGC is having an impact.

Furthermore, your bolded absolutely negates your original sentence. If they weren't accomplishing anything there'd be no need for Trump to potentially start a ground war.

Meh. Trump is just letting them rot, and it's the correct strategy. Iran wanted to draw him in, and he very wisely didn't let them.

They are impotent. The one weapon they had, to cause chaos, has been rapidly diminished. You act like nothing is happening, but the oil is flowing through the strait. Just 3-4 weeks ago iran theoretically had the ability to stop that. That was their one weapon, to restrict the flow of oil, damage the US economy, and thus damage Trump. None of that happened.

What has happened, is that oil is almost flowing at pre-war levels. Iran has been ostracized from the world economy. They are in dire financial straits. Our military has secured the flow of oil, our economy is on fire. Any suggestion that Iran is winning or that we are losing is ignoring all reality.

The US military is in charge. Many people in this thread underestimated the US military.

This isn’t complicated folks:

— Inflation was going to happen due to Covid regardless of who was president
— Biden made it worse with the unnecessary stimulus and entitlement expansions in the American rescue plan
— Biden would have made it even worse with more entitlement expansions in the BBB bill, but that was thankfully shot down by friendly fire
— Trump made inflation higher than necessary with tariffs and the Iran war

Our politicians suck. Give them less money and less power.

Democrats pushing for 6 months of enhanced unemployment pay ($300/week) was part of the March 2021 package Biden signed. $300/week was higher than what most people earned when actually working? That's $15k/year. You're complaining that the people the most vulnerable in our society got a little extra help? Love that Christian charity!

Where's your $3.5 trillion coming from? The IRA that was signed after Inflation peaked at 9% in 2022? Didn't CATO come out and revise their expectations to say it's going to be between $900b to $2b over 10 years? I don't really know how impactful the IRA will end up being, but I supported the healthcare impacts and renewable energy initiatives.

Yes, crude oil flowing through the strait is at prewar levels - but refined products are at ~20% of pre-war levels. Not to mention shuttle tankers are having to double and triple handle the material via tanker to tanker transfers which is incredibly expensive. I agree the Iran military has been smashed, but unfortunately there are still significant costs thanks to this incredible self-goal.

Yes, the refining problem is not solely due to Iran though.

Oil is "only" $89, so that takes into account handling, transfers and whatever else you can think of. Refining seems to be the bottleneck and that is due some to US vs Iran and some to Ukraine vs Russia.

I agree Oil is trumps weakness. He really needs that to keep flowing and the price of oil to get back down in that $75 range.

I think it's WAY too early to call it a self goal. If the long-term results are a more open and free global oil market, then that will be a great success for the USA and the world. That judgement cannot be rendered for many years to come in my opinion.

Prices are not going down. Deflation is required for prices to go down. Many economists, especially the liberal ones like Krugman, believe that deflation is worse than inflation.

What needs to happen is that income needs to CONTINUE to increase. Mind you that Median Income increased 2.6% last year (inflation adjusted).
I've posted numerous times the same thing. Historically, after periods of high inflation, prices do not come down. So the new, higher prices become the baseline.

People who say the prices today are a result of the Biden year's are at least partially right, IMO. But you can't push Trump policies out of the discussion. His policies on tariffs and the war in Iran are additive to where we were on the day he took office.

your first paragraph may or may not be true.. in military terms, the use of overwhelming force, is how you take and keep the intiative in a war, and yields fewer casualties and a quicker end to the conflict. Remember the Powell doctrine from desert storm? It's entirely possible, not that I think this is the plan, that a round the clock bombing exercise might ultimately lead to Trump's desired "unconditional surrender"

On the other hand, it seems as if the way Trump thinks, he might believe that simply the threat of continued bombing would be sufficient. But, we've been down that path and it hasn't worked.

It's possible. It's not like a lot of legislation is getting passed while republicans are in charge of both houses anyway.

I do think we will see a next level of Trump not giving any cares after mid-terms. What does he have to lose? He is old. They are trying to kill him. No more elections. The mid-terms are his last dance and he just is not going to care about the resistance, not that he does now.

Glad to see that even you recognize he will be worse than ever so the very least we can do is attempt to thwart his corrupt agenda with a Democratic Congress. We cannot afford to see how despicable he would be with no guardrails and no election.

Did Biden force blue states into doing all that, or was it determined by their Governors?

Democrats pushed for the extended shutdowns. Biden wasn't president yet.

FPUC was a temporary federal program that added $600 per week to eligible unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, later reduced to $300 for a limited extension. Those amounts were on top of whatever the state normally paid. In blue state NY that was $504 per week. In other words people were getting paid $57k NOT TO WORK.

American Rescue Plan $1.9 trillion
CHIPS Act $0.3 trillion
Inflation Reduction Act $0.8 trillion
Student Loan Forgiveness $0.2 trillion

Add:
Justice and mental health program
Justice Reinvestment Initiative
Second Chance Act
Economic Impact Payments
Emergency Rental Assistance

I think you'd be better off proposing what we should do instead of taking the easy way out and blaming Trump for everything. Trump/republicans deserve blame for a lot of things but not everything. The world isn't that simple.

One thing I never see anyone on the Right acknowledge is the reason for the extended shutdowns. How much do you value life is the operative question. Some people care about it, some don't.

A cross-sectional analysis published in the JAMA Health Forum estimated that if all U.S. states had implemented universal strong restrictions similar to the 10 most restrictive states, excess deaths would have been 10% to 21% lower (saving an estimated 271,000 to 447,000 lives) over a two-year period.

FPUC ($600/week) started in April 2020 and ended in July 2020. Phase 2 ($300/week) was December 2020 until September 2021. Can you please remind me who was president when both phases of FPUC started?

edit: To add, your last paragraph is rich, considering you're trying to blame Dems for all these issues.
