Most of today’s higher prices are Biden-era inflation

But the cult doesn't want to hear it. I've explained it to a few of them, and of course they put their fingers in their ears and yelled....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...-economy-is-strong-so-why-are-voters-so-sour/

Before the 2022 midterms, Americans were facing the worst inflation in 40 years, a collapse in real wages, the highest murder rate since the 1990s and the worst border crisis in U.S. history. Yet, despite these headwinds, Joe Biden got one of the best midterm results of any president since John F. Kennedy.

Well, today, things are better by nearly every metric. The border is secure, and the violent crime rate is falling at a historic pace. The poverty rate is at a record low. Real median household income is at the highest level since the Census Bureau began tracking it in 1967, while inflation was 3.4 percent in August — higher than most would like, but slightly below the post-1957 average. The economy is growing and has created over 1 million new private-sector jobs since President Donald Trump took office, and the unemployment rate is just 4.1 percent. Growth is being driven by the private sector, not by inflationary government handouts.

In other words, the economy is objectively in great shape. Nonetheless, polling shows that three-quarters of people rate it as poor or fair, and Republicans are bracing for a blue wave in November that could sweep them out of power on Capitol Hill.

So, what gives?

Here’s why so many are sour on the economy: Consumer prices today are 27.2 percent higher than they were in January 2021. Something that cost $100 when Biden took office now costs about $127. That is a massive increase in prices in just over five and a half years.

Biden bears the lion’s share of the blame for that cumulative increase. The consumer price index rose 21.4 percent from January 2021 to January 2025 (Biden’s term), while it has risen just 4.8 percent since Trump took office. In other words, of that $27 in rising costs, about $21 came on Biden’s watch, while about $6 was on Trump’s watch.

Put another way, about 80 percent of the higher prices Americans are paying today are due to Biden-era inflation, which is locked in. Though prices have gone up at a slower pace during Trump’s term, they have not returned to pre-Biden levels. People are angry about the cumulative effect on their wallets, and they blame the current occupant of the Oval Office.

trump is making the same mistake Biden did. People in the US don't have any idea of the data you just provided. But they do know that gas is higher, food is higher, interest on their credit cards/mortgage rates are higher..

They know that tariffs have caused higher prices, and the war with Iran, which they've been told will be over in about 40 times, are actions taken but Trump. And he promised in his campaign to reduce inflation and prices.

He's telling people how great things are, and in a macro sense, he might be right. But most people live in a micro world...do I have enough money to make it from the beginning of the month to the end.

In effect, Trump is telling them they do, but they know they don't. And they blame trump policies.

If republicans end up holding the house and Senate, democrats should be the ones questioning election integrity.

I just disagree Ned.

Inflation is much better under this admin. I think most people realize it. Inflation on groceries and food is as low as it’s going to get without a recession and deflation (deflation bad). Food inflation is currently under the 2 % goal I believe.

Energy is expensive, but Iran doesn’t have a nuke and things are trending in our direction bigly.

No one wants democratic highly inflationary green energy policies.

Repubs may give up seats at mid terms, but that’s normal for the incumbents.

If Republicans do indeed hold both houses after mid terms that will be a 5 alarm fire for democrats. They will be on the ropes BIG time with the census coming up and the momentum will be with Vance big time. By that time, oil is likely to be down in the $50’s as the iran situation will be solved by then.

Oh yeah, we are kicking Irans ***. No nuke for them, more oil flowing than pre war. Things are taking shape nicely on the inflation front imo. All that accomplished and inflation didn’t event get to half of where it was wit. Dems.

Anyone thinking g prices are going to help dems
Is sorely mistaken imo. Not because we are where we want to be, but because we are infinitely better off than under a Dem administration.

No one believes AOC is going to be tuff on inflation when all she wants to do is increase social programs.

The only "mistake" Trump is making is Iran, and it is debatable if it really is a mistake. Those people are crazy. They shouldn't have nukes. Yes, it is helping inflate petrochemical prices. From my perspective, the petrochemical industry is taking advantage of it.

The left's terror campaign regarding tariffs has been debunked. They were certain inflation would return to Bidenflation levels. Hasn't happened.

I agree that most voters are dumb and won't make the effort to understand the dynamics. Especially left leaning cultists. Recall, what Jonathan Gruber said about passing the ACA.... They had to rely on the stupidity of the American voter to pass it......

I will tell you that the economy is indeed booming. Gross output is off the charts. Orders are strong.

But hey Ned maybe you should go with Democrats who will lower your grocery bill by …… raising your taxes

I would agree as I don’t feel like grocery prices have skyrocketed like they did under Biden. Same could go for home repair items. But I will tell you that I still don’t understand what the tariffs have done besides jack up the prices of some other items.
I have two kids 3 and under. The cost of baby items, specifically car seats almost doubled in price for our second child due to tariffs and all car seats being manufactured in China. It doesn’t matter what manufacture you are looking at, all of them jacked up prices. Even the ones that claim to be American companies (they still manufacture in China) increased prices just as much as non American companies.
I don’t feel like anything good has come from the tariff situation.

I will be shocked if you can point out any data in that wapo piece that is not accurate.

We've gone through this already, knox. You throw this stuff out there w/o including the biggest caveat: COVID

You're just looking at when prices increased and blaming whoever occupied the WH at the time. The pandemic radically disrupted global supply chains, labor supply and consumer behavior, while the U.S. (and other countries) injected enormous amounts of monetary support to prevent an economic depression...Trump started the stimulus packages and Biden continued them. The Fed estimated global supply-chain pressures alone accounted for roughly 60% of the U.S. inflation surge.

Why do you leave that part out. It's like saying, "He lost the race!" ...without stating he had two flat tires.

Blaming Biden for worldwide inflation caused by COVID's shutting down the global economy, and then starting it back up after supply chain had already been impacted, followed by the Russian and Ukraine war starting would probably be the first thing I'd push back on. I get that people want to blame whoever was in office for the economic woes caused by COVID/Ukraine War, but his policies didn't cause inflation to spike to 9%.

I don't even like Biden, I just hate disingenuous political framing. The US economy was the envy of the first world post 2023, so it's good to see some economic metrics still looking good despite Trump's best efforts to step on his own dick in term 2.

Same here. Biden wasn't a good president, he was a barely warm body occupying a chair. That said, I don't think it would have mattered who was in the WH, the result would have been the same--sky-high inflation due to COVID. Period. The End.

Because the prices never came back down to comparable prices after Covid. Even though it was claimed that Covid was over and things were back. They never came back, they stayed there. Go ahead and blame the initial year or so on Covid, but at some point costs should have returned to a more normal price.
When prices aren’t going to return to pre tariff prices do we just blame it on the tariffs or do we place the blame accordingly?

Correct. Prices were going to go up as a result of COVID. But we never got to the root of COVID and placed blame accordingly. We also never got back to pre COVID/ war either. Seems like an easy cop out if you ask me.
I could have done nothing at all and done just as good of a job as what Biden did. Heck, it probably would have been better. We wouldn’t have made millions of people opposing vaccines because Biden was forcing, sharing false information about them.

Do you understand how inflation works? Because it doesn't seem like you do, based on this post. It also disregards the FTC finding that large retailers exploited the pandemic disruptions to juice their margins and increase profits.

Where did I blame Trump? I said he's stepped on his dick in term 2, which anyone with the slightest bit of objectivity would agree with. I blamed the COVID shutdown and ensuing Ukraine War for the driver of inflation; not once did I mention Trump as a reason for why inflation rose.

You phrased it as if covid was a completely external factor, when in reality the autopen admin's bungling of the covid response contributed greatly to economic - and many other - problems.

Likewise, its failure to make any effort to prevent the Russian invasion of Ukraine - combined with its idiotic attempts to scale back our fossil fuel production - also contributed greatly to our economic problems.

Otherwise, you were quite balanced.

We've produced more oil than ever before in history every year for the last ~8 years. Explain to me how "scaling back our fossil fuel production" - despite setting record levels every year for production - contributed greatly to our economic problems? (I'm sure you'll say something about the Keystone pipeline - which pretty much every analyst said didn't impact energy prices.)

I framed it as the single most important factor - which is accurate. You'll have to explain to me how the Biden admin completely bungled the COVID response, because IIRC, he helped scale out operation warpspeed to provide the masses with needed vaccines, while simultaneously turning the US economy into the envy of the first world from a COVID recovery standpoint.

Who was the last good POTUS?
Oddly enough, I'd probably say 2nd-term Clinton and 1st-term Dubya, but for very different reasons.

Clinton seemed to figure out after the 94 midterms that governing meant actually working with Congress rather than trying to get everything he wanted. His second term produced some pretty significant bipartisan compromises. Dubya obviously was more complicated, but he was a rockstar after 9/11. I fully supported OEF and thought he handled the immediate aftermath extremely well. His approval went from 51% before 9/11 to 86% afterward and eventually hit 90%. OIF killed his presidency, though, so not much else mattered. Regardless, I really like Bush as a human.

Obama was probably the last president who consistently looked and sounded presidential. He was measured, articulate and generally capable of explaining what his admin was trying to do, even when I disagreed with him. (not going to hijack the thread into Obama policy)

Last 10+ years have been two senior citizens who struggle to formulate coherant sentences.

Yes, I'm sure the GOP-led House Committees found Biden responsible for all the economic issues that came about primarily thanks to COVID. That's an absolutely shocking revelation. Incredible investigative work:

Rep. Boebert: “Do you think that the Biden Administration’s proposal to place a ban on gas stoves nationwide will reduce energy prices for people in my district?”

Dr. McPherson-Smith: “No, it’s going to force them to unfortunately have to purchase a new stove if that were to come to pass.”

Re quote 2:
I'm shocked the guy that was President for ~1 year of COVID has less deaths than the guy who was president for 4 years of COVID. Excellent point.

I’m far from being in a cult. Take responsibility and quit blaming the past. Things should be booming but we are in a nonsense war that should have never started.

LOL.... Now you are being silly. Are you familiar with the time value of money? Biden's 12 months of greater than 7% inflation has been compounded for the last 4 years.

What was $1 in 2020 was $1.04 in 2021, $1.11 in 2022, $1.1.157 in 2023...........

There has been no deflation. Believe in math.

Things are booming. Gross output is at a 2.5 year high. 100% increase for the second quarter in 2026.

Yes, COVID caused inflation to rise, which then caused the price of goods to rise. When inflation cooled down the prices did not decrease to pre-pandemic levels because that's not how inflation works.

You can blame it on COVID because COVID was the catalyst for inflation rising. I don't see why this is so difficult to grasp.

The guy with 1 year didn't have the vaccine he pushed to be developed. Autopen did.
The same vaccine the party of Trump refused to take because y'all were convinced there were trackers in it or some other such nonsense? There's a reason pro-Trump counties suffered higher COVID deaths per capita than other counties. It also doesn't recognize the impacts the various different COVID mutations/variants had, but I don't think you want an honest discussion - you just want to complain about Biden.

Inflation was lower in 2024 than it is in 2026. You can’t keep blaming Joe forever. Take responsibility and fix it instead of blaming others.

There has been no deflation. None. What happened under Biden is here today and compounded. Believe the math.

Honestly, you are starting to behave like a cultist. Math isn't subjective. Accept it. Bidenflation is baked into today's prices. It's undeniable.

But hey Ned maybe you should go with Democrats who will lower your grocery bill by …… raising your taxes

if your believe that I think democrats will reduce prices, than I guess I didn't make my point well.

I'm only suggesting that telling someone who is struggling to make ends meet that everything is great is, in my opinion, not a wise thing to do.

I realize, and agree totally that overall economics conditions are really good. All the numbers are good (and I expect will get better) for all the reasons you have posted in the past. But for the average American who understands zilch about economics, they aren't looking at the overall numbers....they're looking at family budgets and there's more outgo than income.

I just think trump would be better off telling the American people that he realizes things are difficult now. Then lay out a plan on how we are bringing things back into kilter. Senator Kennedy said it very well yesterday on one of the Sunday shows (I won't get the quite exactly right) " you can't tell the people believe me , don't believe your lying checkbook" when it comes to family economics.

Oh, and I don't think raising taxes is going to bring down grocery prices. (But do think ending the war with Iran will bring down fuel prices and reduced inflation....makes you wonder why we don't end it)

You are making more excuses for autopen - who allowed millions to enter the country unvetted, which included no checking for covid.

Personally, I'm shocked an opinion piece from a fox news contributor and former speechwriter for W would want to blame everything on democrats
I don't think it's either correct or fair to blame everything on Biden. But, it's not erroneous to blame a large portion of today's prices on the higher inflations during the Biden years. Prices didn't go back to pre Biden years when he left office and go up again the day Trump took office.

At the same time it's correct and fair to point out that some of the higher inflation and continuing upward movement in prices is the result of Trump's policies.

Prices are not going down. Deflation is required for prices to go down. Many economists, especially the liberal ones like Krugman, believe that deflation is worse than inflation.

What needs to happen is that income needs to CONTINUE to increase. Mind you that Median Income increased 2.6% last year (inflation adjusted).

Got it, so anytime inflation happens, just chalk it up to something else and it’s not inflation in your books, even though it sort of is because prices went up and stayed up.

You’re train of thought is clear as mud.

But we were promised they would and that's how we ended up with Trump 2. Instead of doing anything at all about high prices, he immediately exacerbated them with his Liberation Day tariff war and made them worse with his poorly planned excursion in the Middle East. Have you placed any of the blame on his broken promises?

I understand what you're saying. But some economists could make a pretty good case that all of the additional spending during Biden's term - even after it was clear that we had bridged the worst of COVID - certainly didn't help tame inflation. Now was all the inflation caused by Biden himself. Likely not...there were a heck of a lot of intelligent people, least of which was the FED chair, told us that the high inflation was "transitory", and were advising Biden. They were wrong. Why not just admit the error and devise plans to make things better? We waste a heck of a lot of time debating who's at fault and not enough finding ways forward.
