Great win but qb has to improve

Off to a fantastic start this season but.....qb play must get better. He is missing reads and not seeing guys that are open. Missing throws at times. Has a weird lack of pocket presence much of the time.

Right now the staff is scheming almost every completion. He has to improve if we're going to have a great season. Cant leave this many yards on the table and keep winning tough games.

Good news is, with the recruiting pitch we can put out there, this is probably the least talented qb stein will have in his time here.

I can’t tell if you’re trolling or just an idiot.

Getting better every game, starting to show that he can feel the pressure and scramble which really helps our game. Made a couple of big plays with his feet last night, we didn’t see that in our first four games and adds another dimension to our offense. Smart kid, protects the ball and doesn’t force it. He throws a nice ball and is accurate, first time I’ve felt confident about stretching the field in a long time. He can get better, everyone can, but if you told me before the season he’d have 1170 yards, 11/1 TD/int ratio, and a 68% completion rate in his first five games I would have been ecstatic.

I thought Minchey played a great game. We struggled to run early in the game and the staff basically switched to an air attack which unlocked our offense. And unsurprisingly the running game showed some life after the defense started playing to defend the pass.

My only problem with Minchey is that sometimes he stands in the pocket too long. He lacks lateral speed, and that's not his fault. It is what it is. He did however make a couple of runs for good yardage straight up the middle last night when the opportunity presented itself. He's a smart player who makes the correct decision most of the time, which makes up for a lot of other deficiencies. Kentucky in the SEC almost always needs a dual threat QB who can roll out of the pocket to buy time. All that being said he's head and tails above our last few QBs.

Let's look at the the facts

1. 68% completion. 230 yards a game. 11 TD vs. 1 Int....and I think one fumble lost on the season thru 5 games.
- Looks alot like Oregon QBs under Stein....Dante Moore 71% completion 30 TD vs. 10 Int
Dillion Gabrial 72% completion 30 TD vs. 6 Int
Bo Nix was unreal....77% completion 45 TD vs. 6 Int
But we have to remember....those were Big10 and mostly PAC 10...not exactly facing SEC defenses and Oregon has the talent advantage 9 of 12 games a year or more.

2. The former UK QB play.....was simply not in the same league as what we are getting with Stein QB.
- Boley 65% completion 15 TD 12 Int...210 yards a game at UK last year (and Boley's 2026 at ASU is inflated by 6 TD vs. Morgan State....so Stein made the right decision to not pay Boley and get Minchey)
- Vandagriff 57% 10 TD 8 Int
- Leary 56% 25 TD vs. 12 Int
- We had ton of fumbles and bad sacks taken

3. Minchey has been really good in games we needed him....so he's not stat padding vs. scrubs.
- 277 vs. USC on road
- 252 vs. Texas AM on road
- 146 vs. Bama as a poor game

I think he's been solid and runs the offense well in big spots. Throws a catchable ball....does not throw out of bounds on deep balls (that drives me nuts). Gets us into right play/protections. I'd like for him to be a bit better running with the ball....but that isn't his build. I don't' have a problem with the QB play to be honest.

Needs to be able to hurt teams with his running to be next level.

Agree. Saw improvement there this last game. Finally stopped escaping laterally (causing sacks and holds) and finally started stepping up and got a few crucial firsts with his legs.

Overall I'm very pleased given how green he is. He was really only rattled once and that was vs bama who we now know are a truly elite d. He's just missing some opportunities that will eventually get us because of the insane level of competition.

Agree with all that. I am pleased overall. We're already seeing the pocket improvement that was an issue.

I believe he will start seeing some of these missed open receivers and we will start seeing even more explosive plays.

You're trying way too hard to sound like an educated contrarian, and this is a terrible take.

No QB is perfect.

Yeah man, wasn’t a slam directed towardyou at all. I think the game’s slowing down for him and the bama game helped. Sloan’s still not helping him on third by getting behind the chains and putting him in a bad position as we’re constantly getting blitzed, that’s tough on a first year starter trying make those quick reads imo.

He could easily have more INTs. There have been a few that should have been. But, that is one reason those guys aren’t WRs.

KM truly seems to live in the one play, this play only mentality. I don’t see him getting in the dirt over things already past that cannot be changed. He also does not seem to get into that let’s get all our points back on this one drive. He seems patient and in the moment. That is a great attribute. You can give lip service to it all day. But he seems to live it.

Im not trying to do anything. Minchey is playing well but if we are going to have a truly special season he needs to get better on his post snap read and recognition. He is leaving some explosives that we really need to take this team to the next level.

You do know just because he misses someone doesn’t mean that was his first, second or even third read. He has played extremely good especially for someone who hasn’t played in 3 years and has limited weapons. He’s only going to improve.

Agree. I actually think stein got more involved in the offense after that bama game. Sloan did nothing to help deal with the insane pressure bama eventually started bringing.

I knew after that game, we'd really see lots of pressure to see if we figured it out. Since that game, we're MUCH better vs pressure. That's why I think Stein got involved.

Agree that hes been effective because he is elite in operation and is accurately distributing most of the schemed completions.

To really take this team to the next level, we need better decisions in coverage. Too often he's not seeing open guys.

Let's take for example the last play of regulation. In that layered concept, the deeper guy was open and could get out. Instead he got darby killed (because the deeper defender cheated up) inbounds which ran out the clock.

Our margin for error is just so small we need him to improve if we're going to push upwards of 8 wins.
I’ll give you credit. You’re trying hard to convince people that Minchey has been a problem. Yes, he’s not perfect, but he’s been nothing short of great so far. Expecting him to give us more than he’s done so far is pretty unfair to the kid. And the best part is that he has room to improve on top of what he’s already done. Just a weird thread to start.

When we run those high/low flood concepts vs zone, he literally has one defender in conflict and just has to read that one guy.

Way too often he throws short even when that conflict defender is playing up. That read is clear and easy and the ball needs to go to the next level but instead he throws short.

Little things? Absolutely. Do they add up? Yes especially with a small margin if error.

So he isnt playing bad and I never said he was. He just needs to elevate to nail those explosive play opportunities and I know he can.

I didn't say he's a problem. I said he needs to improve if we're going to have a special season.
